I managed the response, including drafting documents, estimating effort, and helping build the team structure.

Compact Muon Selenoid o CMS, que forma parte de los experimentos del Gran Colisionador de Hadrones, ubicado en el Centro Europeo de InvestigaciĂłn Nuclear.

This is the hadronic calorimeter. A calorimeter measures energy (calor in latin is heat).

It is made out of brass and plastic scintillating tiles. A hadron ( particle made out of quarks like protons and neutrons ) produced at the center of the detector will quickly encounter a nucleus from this dense material, producing showers of particles which share its initial energy. Charged particles crossing the plastic tiles will produce fluorescent light, which is collected. The larger the incident energy, the higher the number of particles produced, the more light gets collected. That's how we measure the incoming particle energy. (I think some of the brass comes from old Russian rocked shells) . More pictures and explanations here
