Royal Border Bridge spans the River Tweed between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tweedmouth in Northumberland, England. It is a Grade I listed railway viaduct built between 1847 and 1850, when it was opened by Queen Victoria. The engineer and Architect who designed it was Robert Stephenson (son of George Stephenson). It was built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and is still in regular use today, as part of the East Coast Main Line. Despite its name, the bridge does not in fact span the border between England and Scotland, which is approximately three miles further north.

The Hurlers stone circle near Minions on Bodmin Moor.

I didn't realise until researching for this posting that there are actually three circles in the grouping - each with 29 stones (or markers for those stones missing). I think this frame shows the northern-most circle given the position of the ruined, South Phoenix Mine engine house in the background.

Apparently the stones forming the circles are so named for a group of folk engaged in a game of Hurling on a Sunday whereupon the wrath of a vengeful god turned them to stone. Possibly a bit harsh...

Nonetheless the circles date from the early Bronze Age and form a significant part of the landscape along with barrows, hill forts, tors and mine workings.

To get the separation between the foreground stone and the background I used a 10 Stop ND filter to allow me to shoot wide open in broad daylight.

Another night in paradise

Fairfield Harbour, North Carolina

a colorful October night sky in northwest Illinois...

I had one of those significant birthdays last Friday where you add a zero onto the end of it. I admit in the lead up to it was feeling stressed about the number. It kind of feels officially old. I can't use the- you are only as old as you feel because I feel so old at the moment but I can use the "its better than the alternative"!

My answer was to go away for the weekend to Phillip Island with the family and the two dogs and go for walks along the beach and eat lots of good food. The salty air cleared away the cobwebs of my mind and freed up some laughter. You can't not laugh when you have two goofy dogs running riot in the sand, drinking salty water and doing zoomies around and around till they drop with exhaustion.

I have always spiritually imagined such a scene in my mind: looking at a snow-covered mountain landscape being dyed by the reddish/pink color of a setting sun! This dream really did come true!

🔸 This picture was captured during my first hike of the year 2021, last month. I had initially planned to travel to the French Alps with a friend of mine for stargazing and imaging the winter night-sky. Unfortunately, as the weather was terrible that weekend, we did not manage to get neither decent night-time observations nor photographs (if you remember the IG's story I have shared recently showing an up-to-20-meter visibility atop a 1,200 meters-altitude peak during daytime...that was the day before this shot).

This change of plan made us even more hungry to end our short trip with at least one exciting memory of the sky in such a paradise-like landscape.

🔹 Eventually, few hours before heading back to the city, the weather drastically improved. So, we decided to explore a 1,300 meters altitude summit and, instead of climbing down before the night falls, we stayed up there to watch a fantastic sunset in a crystal clear sky. I knew these pink-illuminated mountain tops and plateau I have always dreamed of would be seen that day.

🔸The spectacular show lasted for about three minutes until the sunrays were obstructed by the horizon. The earlier disappointment of not seeing any stars was then vanished by this unforgettable sight of a pink and snowy sunset!

I hope you enjoyed the story behind this image. See you in the next one!
