Autumnal landscape in late autumn

Migratory birds fill the winter sky against a backdrop of clearing storm clouds.

Yes, it is a little bit difficult to see the birds in this photograph. (If you have the option, you may want to view it larger.) But in a way, that is kind of the point — to set the very small and very numerous birds against that grand scale of this California Central Valley winter cloudscape. When photographing birds I almost always wish I could get closer — but there’s also inevitably a moment when I am moved by the distant view a sky filled with thousands of birds.

I made this photograph on New Year’s morning, shortly after the first dawn of 2023. In order to arise before dawn I had to be in bed well before midnight. (I suppose that there was a time when I might have stayed up until midnight and gotten up before the sun!) As wonderful as it was to greet the new year in the company of thousands of migratory birds, it was even better to be in the company of a wonderful little band of photographers and friends who gather together on every New Year’s Day.

Sun is hiding during lockdown...a beautiful evening

after sunset, a streak of pink and an interesting cloud formation over the decomissioned lighthouse on Talacre beach, Wales

A black and white edit of these clouds over the dead trees brought a little more drama to the scene. Happy Sliders Sunday

I think I'm a bit obsessed just lately...

Dog walking snaps!

Unusual to see several forms of cirrus at the same time. The sun is at the extreme right. Focal length equivalent 14mm.

Blue skies appeared momentarily on my walk around Cholesbury Common on my walk last week

Camping gives you a great opportunity to capture beauty evenings like this.

Spreading clouds that originated with lenticular formation. Truly a picture perfect sky.

As expected the charger for my camera made a surprise reappearance on the day after I‘d bought a new one. Anyway, I was able to take photos of my new home again and did a little tour around a bird sanctuary on Sunday where I took this shot. Unfortunately my computer is still in a box, and I can’t geotag my photos on my tablet; but honestly that doesn’t really matter anyway as the Flickr app tells me that supposedly I took all my geotagged photos in Arinacrinachd, Scotland. (I hope I got that right... does anyone know how to pronounce it? Just out of curiosity LOL)

A rather threatening-looking sky but fortunately for me it was a false alarm.

This photo was taken three years ago from the grounds of the Griffith Park Observatory on my favorite kinds of days, when there are myriad fluffy clouds in the bright blue sky.

I live near the ocean, and I'm physically about 30 miles away from the nearest fires, but the skies have been oppressive and dark, bordering on apocalyptic yellow and orange, not bright blue, and raining ash at times.

I'm praying that the fires will pass, and sooner than later. The country has burned enough. Hopefully these blue skies and wondrous clouds will return above California and the West.
