We were on the road early for our hike today, anticipating a lot of people in the mountains wanting to view the Alpine Larches which are peaking right now. The double bonus was seeing these sunlit clouds from the back lane before we left. They look a bit terrifying, but I don't think they were storm clouds...

Migratory birds fill the winter sky against a backdrop of clearing storm clouds.
Yes, it is a little bit difficult to see the birds in this photograph. (If you have the option, you may want to view it larger.) But in a way, that is kind of the point — to set the very small and very numerous birds against that grand scale of this California Central Valley winter cloudscape. When photographing birds I almost always wish I could get closer — but there’s also inevitably a moment when I am moved by the distant view a sky filled with thousands of birds.
I made this photograph on New Year’s morning, shortly after the first dawn of 2023. In order to arise before dawn I had to be in bed well before midnight. (I suppose that there was a time when I might have stayed up until midnight and gotten up before the sun!) As wonderful as it was to greet the new year in the company of thousands of migratory birds, it was even better to be in the company of a wonderful little band of photographers and friends who gather together on every New Year’s Day.

We had a lovely sunrise in Strathmore this morning. Unfortunately, we were still at the hotel, and couldn't match the beautiful sky colours with something equally gorgeous on the ground...
Rapidly changing skies with jet stream moved over head. Winds were 25mph with gusts to near 50mph.

One of the shots I took during my after work sojourn to Torrance Beach to photograph the sunset prior to the last storm. Although a relatively weak storm, there were two evenings with beautiful photographic opportunities, and I was able to get a lot of photos as the sun was setting on Twosday.

This is the b&w version of a cloudscape shot that I have posted earlier. I have applied a subtle split toning in Silver Efex Pro 2. I gave the shadows a slightly blueish hue, whereas the lights have a touch of yellow. All very subtle but to me it turns the the image into something special. I like it even more than the color version.
"Blue is the sky, blue are her eyes,
Blue are the lakes, reflecting the blueness.
White is the snow, white are the summer nights,
White are the clouds, sheep of the blue sky."

Bridgewater Bay in Somerset ,from Burnham-on-sea. A part of the Bristol Chanel between England and Wales .
Looking across the mouth of the River Parrett, roughly westwards,in the shadows to the left you can just make out the squared off outline of EDF Energy's Hinkley Point B Nuclear power station, and the Quantock Hills beyond.
Still lit by the sun in the far distance are the higher uplands of Exmoor ,the Brendon Hills.
From the right , you can just make out a small rounded dark hill which l think is North Hill, overlooking Minehead, with Exmoor behind it . Further left the more pointed peak is Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in the National Park.
