What taking this image taught me:

1. Many residents hate this building. One described it as "ugly" and wished they'd "blow it up already".

2. Swimming ducks can add weird artifacts to images.

3. Long exposures during the day are not as easy to capture as you might think.

4. ND filters completely ruin the colour of your images straight out of the camera.

Dolbadarn Castle is a fortification built by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great during the early 13th century, at the base of the Llanberis Pass, in North Wales. The castle was important both militarily and as a symbol of Llywelyn's power and authority. The castle features a large stone keep, which historian Richard Avent considers "the finest surviving example of a Welsh round tower". (from wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolbadarn_Castle)

This shot was taken just after my previous post. Difference being, this is about a 2 1/2 minute exposure. With the clouds streaming by, I figure a long exposure would best bring out the movement. Thanks for stopping by!

This is the image you will get at 8mm on a 8-15mm Canon lens mounted on a full frame. The lens actually begins to vingette at 14mm, so the usage is rather limited on a full frame. On a crop body, there's a lot more flexibility. 15mm on a crop will show a bit of distortion, while 8mm will be ultrawide without it vingetting. This lens is a winner on a crop.

How did I go 18 years without a neutral density filter?

This was one of the buildings of the campus at Trinity University, Dublin. It was the building opposite where they kept the Book of Kells. I liked that Trinity was a mix of really modern looking buildings like this one, stark with sharp lines - and more ornate, Georgian architecture. It was a really beautiful campus, and I think I would have liked to study there.

I chose this modern building to upload because although there were more beautiful buildings there (which I also photographed), I managed an effect here that I'd been wanting to try out for a while. I'd never done a long exposure with cloud movement (only ever water movement), and I think I managed to make it work here pretty well.

I have some ideas for photography projects in the new year that I'm so excited about that they are keeping me awake at night. I can't wait to get stuck in!!

Shot 1 of 1,000,000 that won't be B&W

Ahhhh COLOR and HDRs are back in my life! Having such a new found respect for B&W photography still expect a ton from me, but it's a nice feeling to end such a fun month of learning with a sunset I've been sitting on for a long time. This is 5 long exposures meshed together into an HDR image.

--Look for a variation of this image in the 2012 Really Right Stuff catalog in our Long Exposure HDR Tutorial.

Thanks again for all the support during my B&W October Project..talk about fun going full force for a month on such a different photographic discipline. I truly appreciate all the comments and critiques--I feel I learned something new every day. A two minute exposure of a cornfield, taken during our holiday in France. It was pitch black when I took this with only the moonlight lighting the field.

I welcome your comments, both positive and constructive.

My wife gave me the 'heads-up' about this jetty after going fishing here with her brother on Saturday night. I got up early this morning to shoot this knowing there would be clouds around. I took the typical 'looking straight down the jetty' shot but thought it was too similar to my 'Jetty 77' shot so decided to shoot on a bit of an angle.

End of day #5, ~40min past sunset in Miradouro De Santa Iria, with a thick cloud blanket pulling over Ponta do Cintrão and what should be Capelas and Santo/a Antonio/Barbara at the north west coast of Sao Miguel island, the Azores.

I had finished photographing Brisbane's tribute to Nelson Mandela (South African coloured lights on the Story Bridge) and I was heading back to my car when I saw this scene. The tree's framed the bridge and this gentleman eating a pizza for dinner so I grabbed the camera back out, fired off a few frames and headed on my way.

Fast moving clouds over a full moon.

Me and my wife went out last night to grab some star trails seen as it was a nice night. We had a few stops on the list but decided to go to this horse sculpture first, We pulled in at 9:45 and trailed the horse for 30 mins. As we we're packing up a dog came barking at us quite aggressivly, someone wondering what we we're doing. Once we got back to the van and went to leave for home we realised someone had closed and locked the gate. We we're trapped and there was a big lock on the gate, I noticed another gate at the other side of the car park and went to invistigate to find a combination lock on it. With nothing to lose we started entering in random combinations that it could be such as 0000, 0123, 1234, then the date the place opend and so on. none of them worked. Then we started looking for a weak spot to see if we could remove the gate or fence, drive out and put it back, but we were pretty well sealed in. After sitting for a while I managed to find a number on the website, but there was no answer. So I sent it a text message saying we had been locked in and could someone come and let us out. We would have walked home but there was a £75 clamping fee for overnight parking. Again with no reply we made up a bed in the back of the van out of 2 picnic blankets and 2 cusions. It was not going to be a good sleep. Just as we laid down a car appeared at the gate and opened it up for us, I thanked the man and we went on out way. He must have got my text message and came to our rescue, at this we called it a night and came home with a good picture and a story to tell.

Elan Valley bank holiday

245 second exposure

This is my first time lapse video. I took 627 photos in 30 minutes (until my memory card filled up). Then I batch edited the photos in Adobe Camera Raw and Photomatix, and combined them into a video with Picasa. I tried making the movie in Photoshop and iMovie, but iMovie wouldn't give me the correct frames per second and Photoshop just wouldn't make the movie.

At the end of the movie you will see the mill keeper looking out the window above the water wheel. Watch for the sunlight coming in and out of the clouds, moving grasses, and of course the fast moving clouds.

I used my pen flashlight to paint light on the Bliss Dance sculpture. I did this a few times to get different cloud movements. The stars were very bright last night from Treasure Island.

Combination of cloud movement and slow shutter under appropriate light may produce dramatic effects on the photographed landscape.

I shot these a while back but put a heavy mono conversion on them and cropped them to a 16 x 9 format. So here they are in all their full frameness. 113 seconds f16 50mm

On the cloudy and windy night that was yesterday evening, I decided to shoot this bridge. I went with 'long exposure clouds + b&w' in mind and came back with very different results.

After shooting for 30 minutes or so, there was a very slight break in the clouds. I saw a stars but didn't get too excited. Then suddenly! Almost no clouds above me! This lasted for about 3 minutes or so until the clouds came pouring back.

I'm fairly pleased with some of the shots I got (I still have a lot to edit (and even more from a previous shoot!)). This was a really quick edit and I want to work on this more. I have another exposure which includes more of the foreground, which I think will improve the composition. Hopefully I'll get sometime to edit this week after my JOB INTERVIEW tomorrow :D.

Looks good on black.

The particular morning I photographed this photo I had no idea what would greet me when I arrived at my destination. I had decided to go to a beach which I had never seen before and hope that I could find something of interest. After arriving at the beach and walking a little way down it to see what there was, I was a bit disappointed. It was basically a pretty boring beach. I found this neat square-like area of grass with a few waves of sand that I used as foreground interest to make sure the morning wasn't totally wasted. Rule number 1 in sunrise landscape photography is 'scout your location first' as you never know what the morning will bring....

On Saturday Claire & i visited Hadrians Wall where we did a circular walk from Once Brewed to Cawfields Quarry and back using the Northumberland National Parks 'Rangers Favourite Walks' Guide.

Cawfields is a former quarry cutting dramatically through Hadrians wall and the underlying Whin Sill dolerite bedrock.

Hadrians Wall actually stops dead on the top of the point seen in this shot so its just aswell we didnt follow it up the other side lol!

Its a dramatic spot and somewhere that has great potential for every type of landscape photography wether day or night.

As my D70 IR camera had died a death early in the walk i thought i'd give the D5000 another bash with my Hoya R72 IR Filter. Due to its strong IR blocking filter i had to run into nearly 4 minutes exposure which actually helped as i wanted to flatten the water out and get some nice cloud movement. It was my only chance to take proper tripod/filter type shots as we were primarily out for a walk but we had stopped for a bite to eat on the grass here so i had to take advantage right? :D

As i already knew from my previous efforts with this combo False Colour is out of the window so mono it is!

This place is really great as is the whole stretch from Once Brewed and its one for the list if you havnt been before.
