Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae Linnaeus) on Star Cluster, Penta (Pentas lanceolata)

One of several shots I took of this amazing Bougainvillea bush. It was as if it was saying 'Photograph Me, Photograph Me'.

So I did.

Many thanks to all that have commented so graciously on this capture.

A walk in the summer fields under clear blue skies, gentle breeze chases a lonely cloud into view and everything feels right...

An early pre-sunrise morning on the Greek coast - abundance of silence, no gulls, no waves, no wind - a vast stilness.

And then - for less than a second, perfection of color shades clothing the sky.

A new day's birth - and a pale photo capture against its greatness ...

One could get to be nothing else but mesmerized by observing the emerging of the sun behind the mountain into the sky - though it takes less than a minute to form a whole burning chestnut out of a tiny sparkle ...

It was actually 30minutes before sunrise at West River, Maryland

For weeks now, we have been chasing the ever-moving Cloudless... to no avail. But today they are everywhere and actually remaining still! Perhaps they are laying eggs. I love the pink line around the outside of the sides and the very white legs! And oh yes, the antennae are pink too.

Cloudless sulphur butterflies are common garden butterflies in eastern North America from Canada to Florida. They overwinter in the Deep South and begin migrating northward in spring. Several species of wild and garden plants serve as larval hosts and nectar plants.

These large, yellow butterflies have a wingspan between 2.5 and 3 inches. Males are usually solid yellow and females may be yellow, greenish-white or yellow-orange. The females have a black margin on the upper side of their wings. The caterpillars are slender and green or yellow. The body is covered with small black bumps.

Cloudless sulphur butterflies lay their eggs on larval host plants. When the eggs hatch, the young caterpillars immediately begin feeding on the leaves. Larval hosts include partridge pea (Cassia fasciculata), sensitive pea (C. nictitans), sickle-pod senna (C. obtusifolia), coffee senna (C. occidentalis), wild senna (C. hebecarpa) and candle plant (C. alata).

Adult cloudless sulphur yellows feed by sipping nectar from flowers. Nectar sources include azaleas (Rhododendron spp.), Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha), autumn sage (S. gregii) and golden dewdrop (Duranta erecta).

I took this not knowing exactly what it was, but thanks to Lightningboy2000 I now know that it was a "US Air Force Boeing RC-135V Rivet Joint 64-14848 38th.RS 55th.WG OF MULE95" Lucky for me I missed his clouds!

It was a day that I had to make a Petco run for my three animals. Their nearest store is about 15 miles away in the direction of the beach, so I ran my errand and kept on going. Even though there weren't any clouds that would make a seascape more interesting, I decided to proceed with what the day did have rather than what it didn't. For this one, I slowed the shutter down and let the flow of the waves surprise me. Every ordinary day has its own energy and tomorrow is just another one...

Aboutme

Apparently encountered a predator.

Phoebis sennae

Tucson, AZ

I had low expectations for capturing this butterfly with my camera. My wife and I see them erratically flying through our yard daily, but they rarely land and then, just for moments. But today I discovered the plant they like, and I had time to capture it. I think this is a variety of lipstick plant/flower that this butterfly has its head in.

Ignore the date ... this was shot yesterday, a hot & muggy day whose haze cleared to bluebird skies. And what a fun butterfly day it was! Best day of Fall. We went to Gibbs Gardens and I had 5 species posing before we reached the Welcome Ctr. Then got home and this big sulphur and a Long-tailed skipper perched for me till I gave up. It's like a faucet is turned in October and suddenly species are perching. I've got a lot to show you - but since you all have been enjoying my naturally high key shots from my zinnias, here's one from the late day sun.

This image was captured towards the beginning of April, just before work, and depicts the sun rising above both Wiltshire and Somerset. Some people may recognise the hill rising above the horizon.

A cloudless sunrise along the southern Oregon Coast. This is a single shot that took some patience while I waited for the water to come back up this high.

One of our biggest butterflies and most common in Fall. This was an early one in March @ Callaway Gardens - Georgia. They love red flowers.

Happy Butterfly Monday!

p.s. which commercial did you like best last night??

I saw this caterpillar last month in my front ditch...I'd love to know what he ended up turning into!

update: Looks like he is a Cloudless Sulphur larva!!! Thanks to Kim_in_Cajun_Country for the ID...^+^

This one and those in adjacent photos were found locally (thanks, Dennis). Apparently this species has begun occurring more in this part of California in recent years.
