Cloud Forest, Singapore

While exploring the trails around Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador's cloud forest, I came across this spectacular bird—the Toucan Barbet. Its bold colors and thick, curved bill make it almost tropical and cartoon-like, yet it blends perfectly into the dripping green surroundings.

This species is found only in the cloud forests of northwest Ecuador and southwest Colombia, making it a special sighting. It lives mainly in the mid and upper forest layers, feeding on fruit, insects, and small creatures.

Its colorful plumage isn't just for show—it plays a role in communication within pairs and family groups. Watching this one perch quietly in the rain, fruit in its beak, felt like catching a private moment in the life of a rainforest resident.

I've just returned from my fourth trip to Ecuador, guiding for Bartley's Photo Workshops. I'll be leading this trip again next January...

In all the shots I have of this brilliantly coloured New World barbet, my first response is "Angry Bird"! I'm certain that he can't be perpetually grumpy, living in the stunning cloud forest of Costa Rica.

This hummingbird is a female White-throated Mountaingem (Lampornis castaneoventris) which is only found in high altitude cloud forest of Panama and Costa Rica. Moreover, the population in Costa Rica is a distinct subspecies cinereicauda, which may merit full species status. This would make it one of the most geographically restricted birds in the world. This female was photographed at Savegre in Costa Rica and is of the subspecies cinereicauda, which is also known as Grey-tailed Mountaingem. I loved the blurry cloud forest background and the way she was pensively gazing skywards.

Graceful Snail-eater (Dipsas gracilis) resting on vegetation at night in cloud forest.

'Graceful' Snail-eater. This English, or common, name has been attached to Dipsas gracilis for a number of years (since at least 1995, in Frank & Ramus). But 'gracilis' does not translate to 'graceful'; rather it means, unsurprisingly, 'gracile' - slender. I've made the acquaintance of several species of snail-eaters, but I'd have difficulty in deciding which was especially 'graceful' and which was notably clumsy. I suppose if I were a snail-eater I'd be a Clumsy Snail-eater, as escargot no doubt goes best with wine.

This is another species that we can find in Costa Rica but lives in the dim understory where it makes it difficult to expose correctly. Thanks to the good knowledge of friends Gualberto Becerra and Rafa Lau I was able to come home with a nice series of images of this and many other beautiful birds from Panama.
