Like rainforests, cloud forests experience rainfall, but they also capture water straight from the

air, water condenses on the leaves of the plants and drips through the canopy to the floor. In 1970, the original extent of cloud forests on the Earth was around 50 million hectares. Population growth, poverty and uncontrolled land use have contributed to the loss of cloud forests. The 1990 Global Forest Survey found that 1.1% of tropical mountain and highland forests were lost each year, which was higher than in any other tropical forests. In Colombia, one of the countries with the largest area of cloud forests, only 10–20% of the initial cloud forest cover remains.

This species is a Critically Endangered endemic to Cusuco National Park in northwestern Honduras.

This is a Sparkling Violetear. Some of the hummingbird names are somewhat long, so this name got shortened to "Violet Sparkles" and then just "Sparkles."

They have a distinctive chatter. So whenever we'd hear it, we'd announce "Sparkles!"

Laurisilva forests covered the northern hemisphere until the ice age. Actually they only exist on the macaronesian archipielagos and are considered among the richest aereas of biodiversity in Europe.

Telephoto shot (taken from our hotel room) of bromeliads growing near the top of one of the cloud forest canopy trees. These plants take advantage of the height of the tree to get enough sunlight (impossible if they were rooted to the forest floor).

By the way, the image is a bit hazy because it had ben raining.
