Visible red light has a wavelength of about 650nm. At sunrise and sunset red or orange colours are present because the wave lengths associated with these colours are less efficiently scattered by the atmosphere than the shorter wave lengths of the colours purple and blue.
So where the blue and purples have been removed by the scattering the red and orange are more easily seen.
This particular dawn down by the lady, St M's unfolded as you can perhaps imagine from this beginning to the flourish of a glorious red cloak,
This felt pretty amazing been stood 600+ meters high on Starling Dodd looking down into the Ennerdale valley as the clouds rushed past.
