We made a 1.5 hour water stop at Crianlarich station on the second leg of the West Highlander steam special from Glasgow Queen Street to Mallaig via Fort William. LNER K4 2-6-0 61994 The Great Marquess pulled the train over its old stamping ground on the West Highland Line.

It didn't rain but you can see the cloud base is hovering round the mountain top in the background.

On the 1st October 1942 , DJ410 , flying out of RAF West Freugh crash landed on the scree slope in Stoney Cove beneath and between Green Gable and Great Gable in the English Lake District.

The pilot was off course flying in cloud , unsure of his position he emerged from the cloud base and saw the mountains ahead but could do no more than attempt a crash landing on the scree.

The pilot was killed but the other four crewmen survived . He is buried at Haverigg St. Luke Churchyard, Millom

The pilot was

W/O Frederick Orchard Cadham of the RCAF

The only info I can find on this crash is in Aircraft Wrecks ( Wotherspoon , Clark , and Sheldon). Even they do not know the names of the four surviving crew men.

They must have been thankful for the pilots quick actions which probaly saved thier lives.

Very little remains at the site , a few screws and the odd fragment of metal down in the scree .

I badly underexposed this shot , and the other was over exposed , I have done my bets to salvage them and have tried to mimic the natural hues and tones of my earlier shots from the summit of Green Gable www.flickr.com/photos/pasujoba44/4948332279/in/photostream/

The weather was forecast to be pretty awful throughout the entire of the UK this weekend. Regardless of where we decided to visit we knew that there was greater than 90% chance of rain with a cloud base of 300-500m ASL. Pants!

For a change, we decided to head to my Dad's place in North West Cumbria.

Having been there before, I decided it'd be nice for me to take gemma to Crummock Water, famous for its leaping salmon in the autumn. After capturing a few shots at Crummock, we walked back to the car along the river Cocker.

The shadows were getting long at 1600 and we needed to find somewhere to pitch a tent for the night as we didn't want to go to the Caravan Park at Madura Pass. I thought "Wouldn't it be cool to camp on the top of the escarpment" :-) Thereafter, any trip we did along that numbingly boring bit of blacktop between Eucla and Madura Pass, we could look up and say "we camped up there". So we followed a track south that took us to a corner of a Dingo fence. After going through that gate, we followed the road alongside the fence until it disappeared over the edge of the escarpment. We stood for a while looking at the Eyre Highway from this new perspective, before turning our attention to camping areas. Unfortunately there was nowhere near the top that was suitable to pitch our Oztent, so we moved back about a kilometre into some eucalypts with nice clearings among them.

Trying to sleep that night, we discovered the folly of camping up here. Being so high up, and with a low cloud base overnight, the sounds from the road were magnified substantially. We heard every truck that thundered through the night, all the way from Madura Pass to Eucla, it seemed. The sound of them would last for at least 40 minutes, and we'd spend 20 minutes listening as the sound gradually get louder, until they got to the point on the highway directly below us where the Dingo fence crossed the highway. A B-Double (or Triple) passing over that grid at 100kph makes a sound that would wake the dead - and then we spent the next 20 minutes listening to it sloooooowly fade into the distance. A REAL treat was when one (or more) came from either direction before the other had left the area. Cars weren't much better. So here we are, camped in perfect isolation, feeling like we're on Parramatta Road. Lesson learned.

Reiter Affiliated Companies (RAC) Knowledge Innovation and Grower Support specialist Jamie Lopez, at Reiter Berry Farms in Watsonville, CA, on Thursday, August 27, 2015, shares why they are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to improve on the 30% water savings they already achieve with precision micro subsurface irrigation. The use of a Wireless Irrigation Monitoring Network (WIN) to collects data from wireless solar powered soil tensiometers, and weather field stations positioned throughout farms in three counties enable them to track soil, temperature, and humidity conditions with a cloud-based irrigation management system, to better manage watering and soil conservation efforts in more than 700 acres. They actively share their data, methods, and experiences with other producers. Better management by producers using a currently dwindling supply and quality of ground water (wells) in this county will help recharge the aquifer and prevent the migration of nearby Pacific Ocean salt water into the ground water they use. This is one of the ways growers are extending the water supply. Reiter Affiliated Companies (RAC) has been involved with family farming since 1868; is a leading fresh, multi-berry producer in the world; and a leading supplier of fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries in North America.

Wireless soil tensiometer are buried at multiple specific distances and depths from the subsurface water emitters and the root balls. The tensiometer measures how strongly the soil absorbs water. The tensiometer’s porous probe is buried into the soil and a pump pulls some air out, creating a vacuum. Water and moisture from the surrounding soil enters the probe. Low amounts of water entering the tensiometer indicate plants (and evaporation) are pulling water from the soil and may need to be watered. High levels of water entering the tensiometer indicate the plants have enough water. This information is then transmitted to a company’s cloud-based irrigation management system that makes the data available on customer’s mobile device in the field. If this data is combined with historical data and other information, it can help determine when, how long and how fast watering needs to be for best efficiency, soil health and electrical economy to improve a business’s yield and profitability. These measurements helps ensure ideal watering and for soil conservation. The farms have been using the tensiometers for 5 years. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung.

I'm already in the cloud base and cannot go any higher without going inside the cloud. Hence the high airspeed and gentle turns from sink to lift. Normally, in a thermal and with this type of glider, you would fly just a bit over the stall speed (about 60-70 km/h) and do much steeper turns.
