Patricia Scanlon
FOUNDER & CEO, SOAPBOX LABS
Patricia Scanlon is founder and CEO of SoapBox Labs, a Dublin-based start-up, which recently landed €1.2m seed funding after meeting Astia Angels at Inspirefest. As adult speech recognition systems currently on the market are unsuitable for young children, SoapBox Labs has developed a proprietary, cloud-based speech recognition technology platform specifically for young kids aged 4-10. SoapBox Labs licenses its technology to a wide range of application areas that, to date, have not been served by accurate children’s speech technology, such as educational products for literacy and language learning as well as learning games.
San Lorenzo / St. Lawrence
18th century
FILIPINO
Wood with polychromy.
Height: 15.5 in or 38.75 cm.
A fully realized carved figure of St. Lawrence made during the 18th century. The saint is shown kneeling on an ensaimada (brioche) cloud base. He wears a surplice over a red painted cassock showing his role as a deacon of the church. His right hand may at one time have held his attribute -- a grill on which he was roasted alive. His left hand, extended out and probably also holding something, is also missing. Traces of old inpainting. Significant paint loss and flaking.
Note: I wanted to bid on this item at auction but I overslept and missed out. Big loss for me!!!
Forensic Architecture is a research agency comprising architects, artists, filmmakers, journalists, lawyers, scientists, and software developers that investigates state and corporate violence. The agency’s investigations employ pioneering techniques in the fields of spatial and architectural analysis, open source investigation, and immersive technologies. The FA team investigates, explores, and exposes how power reshapes the very air we breathe. Tear gas is used to disperse bodies gathering in democratic protest, white phosphorus and chlorine gas are used to spread terror in cities, herbicide is sprayed from airplanes to destroy fields and displace those whose livelihood depends on them, arson is used to eradicate forests for industrial plantations. Mobilized by state and corporate powers, toxic clouds colonize the air we breathe. Cloud Studies brings together eight recent investigations by Forensic Architecture, each examining different types of toxic clouds and the capacity of states and corporations to occupy airspace and create unlivable atmospheres. Combining digital modelling, machine learning, fluid dynamics, and mathematical simulation in the context of active casework, it serves as a platform for new human rights research practices directed at those increasingly prevalent modes of “cloud-based,” airborne violence.
"Forensic Architecture" won the golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.

During the Clouds, Aerosol, and Precipitation in the Marine Boundary Layer (CAP-MBL) field campaign on Graciosa Island, the Vaisala ceilometer (VCEIL) was used to measure cloud-base height at up to three levels and potential backscatter signals by aerosols. The ceilometer transmits near-infrared pulses of light, and the receiver detects the light scattered back by clouds and precipitation.
