Sanitation Project encourages Rotarians to Loop the Loop ...

5pm on Friday afternoon and as I drove toward the airfield the rain is just sheeting down. We are 1 hour away from launching 14 volunteers into the air in a glider. It seemed as though the chances of getting anyone in the air to be incredibly remote. Heavy rain, high winds and low cloud base. It could hardly be worse conditions for flying.

An hour later, trusting in the weather forecast to be suitable weather for flying, all 14 supporters arrived at the London Gliding Club at Dunstable Downs. The forecast had indicated that the awful weather would be much improved by 6pm and even sunny an hour later, so we were all gathered for the safety briefing becoming more confident of getting airborne by the minute.

By 6.15 the rain had stopped and the sky began to clear just as forecast. One by one 7 Rotarian volunteers and 7 members of the public were seated in the front seat of a two seated glider and were towed to 2000 feet before being cast adrift from the tow plane and were sent gliding freely through the air.

Once free, the glider pilot put the glider into a dive and went through a loop-the-loop. Often-another loop followed and another. As the evening progressed the last few flyers had the view of a beautiful sunset.

During the event there was a free barbecue for flyers and supporters alike. The crew and ground crew joined in for a burger and the Club bar was open for something to steady any nerves.

The evening was a great success with 14 very happy flyers having enjoyed something special, often expressed as a thrill of a lifetime. The youngest was just 15 and the oldest, well let’s just say he was in his 9th decade.

The volunteers had accepted the ‘Loop-the-Loop’ challenge to raise money through sponsorship towards a Global Grant project for a school sanitation project in South Africa.

I was fortunate to benefit from some really murky weather amongst the hot dry days of early August.

Arriving around five in the morning, I set up at the Kit Kat Stones with a dark blue hour shot in mind, but the conditions were just a bit meh, so I opted to move on.

A while later a band of fine drizzle swept up the Burbage Valley setting up a moody backdrop for Carl Wark. As this happened the now rising sun sent an almost ethereal white glow under the low cloud base giving the whole scene a very other worldly feel.

Cumulus Clouds.

Cumulus clouds look like white fluffy balls of cotton wool and mark the vertical extent of convection or thermal uplift of air taking place in the in the atmosphere. The level at which condensation and cloud formation begins is defined by the flat cloud base, and its height will depend upon the humidity of the rising air. The more humid the air, the lower the cloud base.

Small cumulus clouds are evidence of relatively stable air during fair weather. Once condensation begins, uplift continues only for a short distance before the temperature of rising air falls below that of the surrounding atmosphere. Since cumulus clouds have no existence apart from thermal convection, they are diurnal clouds when over land, forming mid morning and disappearing again after sunset. They may also form over sea when the sea surface temperature is warmer than the air passing over it. Then similar convection currents can develop.

Young fair weather cumulus have sharply defined edges and bases while the edges of older clouds appear more ragged, an artifact of cloud erosion. Evaporation along the cloud edges cools the surrounding air, making it heavier and producing sinking motion or subsidence outside the cloud. This downward motion inhibits further convection and the growth of additional thermals from below, which is why fair weather cumulus typically have expanses of clear sky between them. Without a continued supply of rising air, the cloud begins to erode and eventually disappears. Fair weather cumulus typically have a lifetime of 5 minutes to about half an hour.

Sergeant Pilot Maurice RAES

(Born 17th June 1921 - KIA 13th June 1942)

350 (Belgian) Squadron RAF

Crashed near Sprowston Road

on June 13th. 1942

returning to Debden after

a convoy patrol

1299915 Sgt. Pilot Maurice Herman Marceun Raes, RAFVR, 350 (Belgian) Squadron, RAF.

Maurice Raes was born on 17th. June 1921 at Mons, Belgium.

He signed up for 3 years with the Belgian Aronautique Militaire in September 1939. He received basic military education at Zellik and then started flight training at Wevelghem until Belgium was invaded by Germany on 10th. May 1940. The flying school was then evacuated to Oujda, Morocco, but after the capitulation of France, most of the trainees were evacuated to Great Britain where they arrived on 5th. August.

Maurice was posted to RAF Odiham for flying training in November 1940. He made his first flying sortie in a Magister with his instructor G. Dieu on 23rd. November and his first solo flight on 19th. December.

He joined 53 Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) at RAF Llandow in Wales during November 1941 to convert onto the Spitfire. Rated as 'Above Average' he was posted to 350 (Belgian) Squadron in March 1942. On his first flight in a Spitfire Vb on 20th. March 1942 he severely damaged his aircraft whilst landing. After several training flights, he went 'Combat Ready' and on 4th. June 1942. He undertook his first operational sortie, flying as 'Blue 2' in Spitfire Vb P8545, coded MN-U.

Maurice, flying the Supermarine Spitfire Vb W3446, coded MN-R, took off from RAF Debden in Essex at 16:50 hr on Saturday 13th. June 1942 to patrol a northbound convoy that was 8 miles east of Martlesham in Suffolk. In total ten 350 Squadron Spitfire's made up the patrol from 13.05 to 19.10 hrs.

Maurice was flying in the last section to leave the convoy off the Norfolk coast. With the weather bad and visibility at 1,000 to 2,000 yards and the cloud base at 200 feet he became separated from his No. 1 and was given a vector back to Debden. Flying towards Norwich, the Spitfire was plotted as an enemy aircraft. Perhaps due to recent air raids during April and May, barrage balloons had been deployed in the city. The balloon crews saw him heading south east and very low. The Spitfire hit one of the standing balloons over a residential area. It is thought he remained with the aircraft trying to steer it away from houses, when he could have simply bailed out. The Spitfire crashed at the rear of 120 Sprowston Road at 18:27 hr, killing Maurice, four days before his 21st. birthday, with the aircraft burning out.

Maurice was buried with military honours at Brookwood Military Cemetery at Woking at 15.00 hr on June 18th, 1942, Sqn Ldr Guillaume, P/O Deltour and Sgt Ester attended as squadron representatives. After the war, Maurice, as were most Belgian aircrew, was reinterred in the Belgian Airman's Field of Honour at Brussel's Town Cemetery.

A housing development on the Spitfire's crash site now bears the name Maurice Raes Close. This was the first time in Great Britain that such an honour was bestowed on a Belgian pilot.

This brass plaque was unveiled at Maurice Raes Close on 10th. October 2006, attended by members of Maurice's family, the Lord Mayor of Norwich and Belgian Air Force officers. A fly past was made by a Belgian Air Force General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.

In memory of the crew members of the 385th Bomb Group U.S. 8th Air Force Flying Fortress B-17 bombers, tragically killed in a collision over Reedham Marshes on the 21st February 1944.

– B-17 42-37963 and 42-31370 Memorial –

A large, rectangular, stone tablet laid onto the ground, inscribed in English in incised and black lettering. The tablet contains the engraved depiction of the 8th Air Force insignia on the top center, followed by the commemoration message then the list of names of the crew of the involved bombers.

On February 21st, 1944, the 385th Bomber Group, part of the 4th Bombardment Wing, 8th Air Force was tasked to provide 34 aircraft to carry out a diversionary raid on the Diepholz aircraft depot in N.W. Germany while the main force would attack an aircraft components works at Brunswick in Lower Saxony.

Two of the aircraft that took off from USAAF Station 155 at RAF Great Ashfield, near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk to fly to Diepholz were B-17G #42-31370, coded SG-O, from the 550th Bomber Squadron commanded by Capt. John Hutchison and B-17G #42-37963, coded XA-O, from the 449th Bomber Squadron commanded by 1st Lt Warren Pease. The Hutchinson crew were flying on their 25th combat mission and cameraman ''Bud'' Creegan was aboard to capture the completion of their tour of duty. Hutchinson's regular bombardier, Ed Gamble, had been ill and his place was taken by Clarence Soucek, but during the briefing, Gamble asked Soucek to swap as he didn't want to miss the 25th mission.

German defences were light and despite inclement weather, severe damage was inflicted on the target. At 15:39, the returning bombers crossed the East Anglian coast at a height of 8,000ft at 52-43N, 01-41E, north of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The cloud base was at 4,000ft and was up to 3,000ft thick. The weather conditions were poor and Lt. Col. James McDonald, group leader that day, reduced the danger of collision by ordering the descent through the cloud in three-ship elements.

Capt. Hutchinson led one vic of three aircraft, Lt. Pease flew off his starboard wing and Lt. John Terrace flew on the port wing. Due to his position in the cockpit, Lt. Terrace gave command of his bomber to Lt. Eugene St. John who had a better view of the lead bomber from his co-pilot's seat. In the cloud, with no horizon, each pilot had to fly on their instruments. In the cloud, it is thought that Lt. Pease may have suffered vertigo and lost control of his aircraft which entered a spin. To recover from a spin, a full rudder is applied in the opposite direction and the aircraft is placed in a dive, when the turn-and-slip indicator is centered the aircraft is pulled up and returned to level flight. The flight manual requires that the maneuver must be 'smooth and gradual' but with low height, Pease and his co-pilot were struggling to do this.

When the formation emerged from the cloud, St. John notice Pease's bomber was missing, then the bomber broke cloud in a very steep dive astern of Hutchinson's aircraft. With the altitude now at less than 1,000ft, Pease flew under his leader and pulled up sharply into the path of the on-coming bomber. The starboard propeller (No. 3) of Hutchinson's bomber tore into the spine of Pease's aircraft completely severing the tail section that fell to earth. Seeing this happening, St. John instinctively broke hard to port to save his aircraft. Continuing upwards, the front two-thirds of Pease's aircraft looped uncontrollably above Hutchinson's aircraft before cutting back onto it and breaking it in half, sending it crashing to the ground at Mill Dyke where it exploded on impact. The tail-less Pease aircraft swung 180 degrees towards the village of Freethorpe, miraculously flying level and making as if to crash land near Decoy Carr. The bomber slithered across the marsh before smashing into a dyke edge and exploding.

All twenty-one crew on the two bombers were killed.

On a hot summer's day (Hah!) we had a plan to walk up to the Nine Standards which had been on our "to do" list for quite some time.

However it was "fogged out" so we came up with a "Plan B" and had a wander over Birkett Common which was well below the cloud base.

On Birkett Common is this curious 12th Century building known as Pendragon Castle ...

A telemetry antenna (left) and a ceilometer (right) are easily accessible atop one of the ARM Mobile Facility (AMF) instrument shelters. The AMF was deployed for the first time in spring 2005 at Point Reyes, California, as part of a field campaign to study the microphysical characteristics of marine stratus clouds. The telemetry antenna receives signals from airborne radiosondes transmitting weather data, while the ceilometer uses pulses of light to measure cloud-base height at up to three levels and potential backscatter signals from aerosols and precipitation.
