A very close portrait of a marmoset monkey!

Chapel at Casa de Juste - I think it dates from the 19th century, so not as old as other parts of the sprawling estate.

Here is a close up view of the monster tree. One can also see Sir Pumpkin's scientist in this picture. The scientist was brought into Sir Pumpkin's time, from the future, by a powerful wizard. The scientist's appearance was then changed by the wizard's magic to its present condition. The scientist can be seen feeding the baby pumpkins with a special mixture of liquids designed to make them grow much faster.

"Closing Act:" I had seen so much drama unfold in the otherworldly landscape and dynamic skies just in the final half hour of daylight, that I thought the show was over. But then I turned 180 degrees behind me and saw this, nature's final bow. Bisti Badlands, New Mexico.

This bull waked within 30 yards in front of the truck. He didn't care a thing about us. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

In going through my photos from last Sunday, I discovered that I had another shot that shows the idiots in the little runabout who crossed the bow of the Glovis Safety as it was about to pass under the bridge. The ship blasted it's horn and you can see that these dopes were very lucky not to be ground into oblivion! The Glovis was making about 15 knots and would not have been able to avoid the collision. I guess this is survival of the most idiotic at work!!

 

The bow wave that these ships generate is massive and we keep a good distance between our boat and the big ones! So this is a zoomed shot!

The same little water cascade in the fairy pools, but shot closer. You get more water flow and pool action, but the huge mountains in the back are now, well, just background. Now - why did they shrink - I'm closer to them as well after all? It is *not* because I'm using a wider lens. I am (22mm versus 70mm for the previous post) but this is not why things look different.

 

It's because I'm now so close to the water fall in the foreground, that the *difference* in distance from me to it, and from me to the mountain is now vast. I'm no more than 1.5 metres from the foreground and some 400 metres from the mountain - thats about a ratio of 1:260. In the previous shot I was about 20m from the foreground and 420m from the mountain which is a ratio of only 1:21.

 

It's this ratio that determines the ratio of size of the objects. Double the distance from something, and it appears a quarter of it's size (area) in the image (halve the height, halve the width). It's an inverse square relationship, just like that of radiating energy intensity.

 

At only 21 times the distance from foreground to mountain (in the previous shot), the distance is halved 4.4 times for the foreground (2^4.4~21) and every time the distance halves to an object it appears 4 times the size: 4x4x4x4... (or in this case 4^4.4 or about 446). The waterfall in the foreground appears 446 times larger than it would if it were at the same distance as the mountain.

 

In this shot however the mountain is 260 times the distance away - roughly 2^8, so we can say we doubled the distance about 8 times. The foreground then, is roughly 4^8 times bigger or 65,536 times bigger - in area of the photo - than it would be if it were at the same distance as the mountain.

 

This is why you *cannot* "zoom with your feet". If you move your position, you affect fundamentally, the relationship of the objects in the frame with each other and with the camera. Zooming in from the same position on the other hand, merely crops the frame: it's the same scene, just less of it. Conversely, I alter the scene by getting closer and making a bigger scene (asuming I still want all of the waterfall in it), and I need a wider crop (focal length) to get it all in.
