Cliff of lithified, well-sorted, cross-bedded, (see photo with Steve as scale) calcareous (shell fragments) sand with red unconformities.
=> indurated aeolianite (lithified coastal dune), induration by precipitation and ground water dissolving of shell clasts.

Red unconformities: Terra Rossa palaeosoils that developed in times of dune stability (moister climate, vegetation cover - interstadials or interglacials?) burried by advances of aeolian sands. Red colour (mostly haematite) formed by in-situ weathering of the carbonates (see underlying root-like features in section)
The mist you see at the top of the mountain was the beginning stages of what quickly turned into a full on snow storm that morning at McGee Creek in the Sierra Mountains of California.
The good news was that it cleared up in the afternoon and I was able to get a few shots with snow on the peaks!

Another from the beach, but this time with a bit of HDR involved. I didn't manage to capture the size of this cliff however. At 10mm, there is a lot of cliff here, but you just don't see it in the photo. Need someone climbing next time I guess.

Many years ago Cliff worked on the Apache Software Foundation. On a business trip while contemplating the impact of Martin Luther King Cliff decided to change direction and focus in his life.
Cliff formed a non-profit (www.literacybridge.org/) and decided to tackle poverty in Northern Ghana were millions live well below the poverty line on less than a $1 a day. Cliff created a Talking Book (when your poor you are often illiterate) that allowed him to reach villagers with messages designed to improve lives with farming techniques and save lives with basic health procedures.
Years later he has partnered with UNICEF and is impacting 1000s of lives. Farmers increase yields and win national Ghana farmer recognition awards and families spend 6 hours a week listening to messages on the Talking Book.

Dramatic cliffs of 2.8-million-year-old deep-marine Mangweka Mudstone form an imposing backdrop along middle reaches of the Rangitikei River. Bands of hard concretions, much the same as those at the nearby Whitecliffs Boulders, protrude from the cliff face. The cliffs also contain thin volcanic ash layers from large eruptions in the then-active Tauranga-Kaimai Volcanic Centre, and thin sandstone beds that represent submarine landslide and storm deposits.

During my time in San Diego visiting my sister, we visited Sunset Cliffs. I went back a few times by myself to sit. What a lovely place. We also loved the Little Lion Cafe close by for a killer breakfast.
