Not the cleanest background, but I just adore the backlit effect on this woodpecker. Just a beautiful bird to watch!
Looks like I forgot to post to Flickr for over a month. Not gonna lie, I've been pretty lazy about it. Don't worry, you've not missed out on much. But yeah, I'll hopefully be posting more soon, and I'll probably have more figures done as well.
So here are some figs I've been working on.
Left to right:
Tracer: Fully sculpted, painted (except for the face), yata yata yata.
The Ruler of Everything: From Tally Hall's song of the same name.
Zimbabwe Songbird (Red): From Tally Hall's Banana Man song.
Captain Marvel: Probably my cleanest paintjob to date.
Walter Mitty: From The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Not much of a fig, just a quicky.
AIM Agent: Fully sculpted helmet. Nothing special.

This is what it looks like to walk through a Redwood fern forest. The cleanest smell you've ever experienced.
CN A439 is pounding the diamond at Ringold on a brisk winter afternoon. A439 usually returns to Windsor under the cover of darkness from London, however occasionally there can be delays and the return trip happens the following day instead. This particular outing it worked out that 439 had a nice pair of SD75Is with the leader being the cleanest of the two. See my recent VIA 72 post for the history/set up of how this interlocking works between CN/VIA and CP.

With a pair of the cleanest units on the CP/CPKC roster, an empty grain train from Mexico approaches Chaney Jct just west of Downtown Houston. This train was the first to cross CPKC's new Ottensmeyer Bridge at Laredo after the ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 6th.
These two Tier 4 ES44's are part of a set of eight ex-Baffinland Mining units CPKC purchased in 2024. The locomotives were built as Tier 4 demo units for GE/Wabtec and had been leased & repainted for Baffinland Iron Mines for a new railroad to be built on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. However, due to project delays the mine opted to end their lease of the locomotives and GE then sold them to CPKC.
CP 7432 was built as GECX 2030 in December 2014 and became BIMR 7003 before being sold to CPKC in 2024.
CP 7437 was built as GECX 2022 in April 2013 and became BIMR 7008 before being sold to CPKC in 2024.

A week ago I took an out of state client out for birds on the West. Her primary was, of course, the Northern Pygmy Owl. We discovered this one while photographing a pair of Ash Throated Flycatchers in the late afternoon. Definitely my cleanest capture of this species. Took a bunch of close shots in various settings. Click for large view.
Perfectly clear, clean, sandy lakes, called "perch lakes", unique in the world, are found on Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island located in Queens Land, on the east coast of Australia, a day’s outing from Brisbane. A perch lake is physically perched or located at the top of a sand dune above the water table. Fraser Island is recognized as a United Nations World Heritage site. Swimming in this perch lake is a privilege, an experience, unlike any other. There are no plants, no fish, and nothing but the cleanest sand and water to enjoy. For an explanation of the unique features of Fraser Island and its lakes, check out the site: www.fraserisland.net/images/brochures/FFLakes.pdf

The Arc of Appalachia owns this 107 acre alkaline bedrock site that is a mixture of cliffs, springs, seeps, grottos and sinkholes. It is home to the rare Snow Trillium that is tiny and blooms when the area is snow covered. The rare Walter's Violet, the smallest of violets, is another early blooming flower in this preserve. Three trails traverse this unique magnesium dolomite karst country preserve. A large copperhead snake was lurking by the steps of the wooden bridge that crosses Crawdad Creek near the parking lot. To the right is one of two creeks that flow across the preserve and received the highest water purity rating when tested. They're at the top of Ohio"s cleanest waterways.

The pretty coastal village of Mundesley is some seven miles south-east of Cromer on the Norfolk coast. It is within the Norfolk Coast AONB and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The beautiful sandy beach, which is overlooked by colourful beach huts, is one of the cleanest around. There are plentiful sands stretching for miles with very little shingle. A few years ago it was voted the Best Blue Flag Beach in Britain.
In WWII the beaches in this part of the country were very heavily mined in order to deter an invasion, and after the war it took many years and cost the lives of a number of bomb disposal experts to make all the beaches safe again. There is a memorial to them on the top of the cliff at Mundesley.
The view from the Addington/Shirley Hills viewpoint, taking in the buildings looking north west, across Chelsea, towards Wembley. The stadium is 16 miles away from this spot. Camera at 500mm in crop mode to give 800mm. Not the cleanest shot ever as there was a bit of haze, but still, fun to see so far away!
Thanks very much for viewing. Have a great Sunday.
Singapore Changi Airport, commonly known as Changi Airport (IATA: SIN, ICAO: WSSS), is a major civilian airport that serves Singapore and one of the largest transportation hubs in Asia. As one of the world's busiest airports by international passenger and cargo traffic, it is currently rated the World's Best Airport by Skytrax, the first airport in the world to do so for eight consecutive years. It has also been rated as one of the world's cleanest airports and highly rated international transit airports.
The Königssee is a natural lake in the extreme southeast Berchtesgadener Land district of the German state of Bavaria, near the Austrian border. Most of the lake is within the Berchtesgaden National Park. The lake is noted for its clear water and is advertised as the cleanest lake in Germany.
Behind a quartet of corporate G&W orange, an Indiana Southern loaded coal train heads for the power plant at Edwardsport. The train loaded at the Bear Run Mine located on the Indiana RR. The power is run-through with crew changing between the roads at Beehunter.
The following I paraphrased from Duke's web site:
Duke Energy's Edwardsport Generating Station began operations in June 2013. It is one of the world's cleanest coal-fired power generating stations and is the first to use integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology on a large scale. The 618-megawatt plant reduces the ammount coal to produce electricity. It replaces the company's former 160-megawatt Edwardsport plant which has been retired. The plant gasifies coal, strips out pollutants, and then burns that cleaner gas to produce electricity. Fewer emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulates combined with Edwardsport's efficiency also reduces its carbon emissions per megawatt-hour by nearly half.
Lake Ohrid is one of the deepest, cleanest and most ancient lakes in Europe. It has incredible ambience and energy.

I think this might be V4 of the suit I'm making. So many duds along the way, this is the cleanest complete body so far.
Located at 1300 Bacon Flat Road in Adams County, the preserve feature 30' cliffs of dolomite rock and two of the cleanest streams in Ohio. This exceptionally beautiful countryside is composed of cliffs, springs, seeps, grottos and sinkholes. All of this is found on it's 107 acre footprint.
With a depth of 1,943 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States - and one of the most beautiful. The water's intense blue color is an indication of its great depth and purity.
Surrounded by cliffs, the lake is fed entirely by rain and snow. Scientists consider Crater Lake to be the cleanest and clearest large body of water in the world.

A lot of walking involved over heath & into gorse bushes today looking for a Grassie. It was a real struggle as they were off as quick as like lightening as soon as they saw us. Managed to spot this Female basking just over the top of a bush unfortunately not the cleanest of shots but I achieved my goal. So a return trip is definitely on the cards & hopefully a cleaner shot.
Today I got my first shots of Trumpeter Swans, although I've seen them at a distance for several years now. Some of the differences with the similar Tundras: The Trumpeter has a red or pink "grin" line on its bill. The eyes touch the bill, making it a single mask. They don't have any yellow spots on the bill. They are larger than Tundra Swans and not nearly as noisy! These two look a bit dirty: the waters in which they have been foraging for food aren't the cleanest! Tomorrow I will post images of an immature Trumpeter.
Perhaps one of the cleanest Grand Trunk locomotives we've seen in Eastern Iowa in recent times, GTW 4927 along with CN repaint 5844, lead L56591 25 westbound alongside Mar Jo Quarry Road as they begin their long climb out of the Mississippi River valley. Taken on the CN Dubuque Subdivision on 6/25/22.

Sorry to disappoint, no Kelly LeBrock or Robert Downey Jr (or anybody else) in here.
So what we have here are partners in crime - my goose neck kettle and the lip of my pour over coffee maker.
I've actually turned into a coffee geek over the last couple of years. I favour my Aeropress because it's the quickest and cleanest method but also genuinely the best coffee. But it doesn't make for even an average photographic subject (ok from underneath with the coffee dripping but how many times has that been done by the pros?!!)
Made by Startrails App from 189 images captured at 17s intervals 14mm F2.8 15s ISO640. Same images were used to create the time-lapse. Nine of that set (from the middle) were used to create the "Still" of the Milky Way.
Interestingly this is the easiest of the 'types' to make. Whether you use Startrails or a different app (e.g. Photoshop) one basically would use a LIGHTEN blend mode that "simply" uses the lightest bits of each image. Since the first image in the sequence is the lightest and cleanest exposure for the land (as it's progressively getting darker) that basically 'comes through' without needing to do any manual masking.
The "trick" is to make one's star-trails FIRST because one does NOT need to exposure ramp the images for star trails (since the light emitted by the stars does NOT change during the sequence). 15s / ISO640 / F2.8 is probably my 'default' exposure for stars ... at least in/around Melbourne.
Fraser Island is a World Heritage Site and the largest sand island in the world. It is a place of full of superlatives, incredible uniqueness and immense diversity.
More than 865 species of plants thrive on the island. It is the only place on earth where tall rainforest grows in sand. In Pile Valley, 1,000-year-old rough-barked satinays trees are found. Despite being logged the kauri pines dominate in some areas.
Fraser Island has over 100 freshwater lakes as well as the second highest concentration of lakes in Australia. The freshwater lakes on Fraser Island are some of the cleanest lakes in the world.
The water in this river at first looks mirky but it's the exact opposite. The water is SO clear that all you can barely see it and what you do in fact see is the sandbed that the river runs over and everything under the surface.
Flash of Color - While hiking, I noticed a tiny flash in the Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) in front of me. I was excited to see it was a tiny male Merlin. Merlins are one of my favorite raptors and are easy to observe in season, but seeing them eye level in nice light is rare around here. Not the cleanest setting, but Valley Oaks are deciduous and drop their leaves each fall/winter. This provided interesting colors for this small in frame shot.

If you ever traveled on the Icefield's Parkway you would have been treated to rugged mountain scapes surrounded by green forests and beautiful turquoise lakes.
As you drive further on the Parkway you enter Jasper National Park where you will witness the Athabasca Glacier. Walking up to the glacier is an experience on its own and if you get the chance, fill up your water bottle with the cleanest and freshest water you will ever drink

Lake Brienz, one of the cleanest lakes on the edge of the Alps.
14 km long, 2.8 km wide, 260 m deep in the Bernese Oberland between the sub-mountains of the Emmental and Bernese Alps.
Industries got in to the spirt of '76 movement. Armco Steel near Cincinnati, Ohio, painted one of their rare Lima-Hamilton's in an eye catching (if not also dirt catching as steel mills aren't the cleanest place to put something white) scheme.
Armco had 2 LS-1000's built for them, 708 and 709. They also acquired the former Lima demonstrator from TP&W and it became their 707. As to which one this is, I'm not certain. 709 is still extant at Whitewater Valley railroad Museum in nearby Connersville, IN, so it's possible this one-time Bicentennial painted loco is still around.

Macro Mondays - Wet
Through the Lens - Week 2 - Macro
Happy Macro Monday everyone.
Gosh it was so hard trying get water droplets to stay in place on these little tomatoes ... they are the cleanest tomatoes ever, the amount of water they've had splashed over them :)
Unfortunately, the windows weren't the cleanest and on photos the great view came speckled with dust and spots :( Hence the over-processing, as I didn't want to delete this archive shot. That eye-catching gold steeple belongs to a 'mundane' insurance business, despite looking like a royal palace or spiritual temple...
Distant memories from a long forgotten P&S (point-and-shoot) camera that was smaller than a smartphone but had a Zeiss 5x optical zoom and captured decent pics...
Each spring I try to shoot the first mass wildflower bloom, namely the Prairie Crocus, also known as Pasqueflower. The little bursts of purple, blue, and yellow are very welcome after many months of a limited winter palette.
This spring, weird weather and a back injury have prevented me from getting out as often as I'd like. I did, however, search one of my reliable locations in April, where I found several of these fresh beauties in the first stage of flowering. They were in a busy location, so shooting straight down gave me the cleanest view.
I used my standard rig for this shot: macro lens, teleconverter (optional), tripod, cable release, and I used my ball cap to block the sun and reduce the contrast by eliminating harsh shadows. Without the tripod, I would have needed three hands. Or an assistant.
Not to get all preachy, but I can't imagine doing serious macro photography without a tripod. Not only does it allow a full range of shutter and f-stop combinations, but it takes the strain off my arms, shoulders, neck, and back when setting up a shot like this. I don't even have to hold my breath!

I have numerous photographs of the GBRf retro BR lined Brunswick Green class 66 but this is easily the cleanest I have ever seen it. It is taking empty spoil wagons to Clacton for the major remodelling that is taking place in association with the resignalling.
"Well I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head, that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day"

Melbourne's Yarra River is affectionately know as the upside down river due to it's permanently brown appearance.
The much maligned muddy colour of the Yarra is caused by the easily eroded clay soils of the water catchment. The water was clear at the time of European settlement, but intensive land clearing and development since the mid 1800s has resulted in the presence of microscopic clay particles. The particles are kept suspended by the turbulence in some parts of the middle and lower sections of the river. When the river water combines with marine salts as it enters Port Phillip, the suspended particles clump together and sink. The muddy appearance does not indicate an unclean waterway. In fact, the Yarra is probably one of the cleanest capital city rivers in the world. Since the major clean-up campaigns of the late 1970s and 1980s, the river has again become home to several species of fish and even the occasional dolphin.
I really think I've lost my mind. Why would anyone get out of bed at 4:00am in January and drive over an hour to go out in sub zero tempuratues to take a picture?
This is Nippersink Creek at Glacial Park Conservation Area in McHenry County. It is one of the cleanest and healthiest streams in the state of Illinois.
I have been making the drive to this place since I saw a photo taken here by Ray Mathis on the cover of Chicago Wilderness Magazine last year. If you want to see just how beautiful this place is, check out this guy's galleries. Most of these images are from Glacial Park: naturesmasterpieces.com/Gallery/CW.html
Another disastrous day out. I was on my way to Ashley for the 73s, but with RTT throwing a wobbly and nothing allocated on TOPS, I sacked it off and got off the train at Stockport instead in the hope I could manage something before my train home again as a sort of consolation prize.
Anyway, thankfully 66709 was out to play on the 6H56 Hope St Peakstone P.Sdgs-Peak Forest Cemex Gbrf, so I ventured to the end of the platform, banged the zoom on and did the classic viaduct shot. Despite going all the way there and not getting any of my intended targets, it was nice to finally bag 709 after many many years of chasing it.
This was my first time ever seeing the loco and my last one to finish off the original GB sheds to cop for sight. And since I'm known for having exceptionally bad luck with celeb sheds, it felt somewhat rewarding to get this even if it's not the cleanest shot.
