please note: never to be confused with Benny from the Lego movie. He does like a good spaceship apologies for the punny title
This was the first model I ever attempted in Studio. The goal here is to do a very clean, sleek update to the Galaxy Explorer that's as close as possible to the original set, unlike many other Galaxy Explorer remakes that take the basic outline as a platform for complex SNOT techniques or greebling. However, I did make a few changes. I wanted the crew to be able to access the cargo in flight, so instead of a solid wall in the middle the crew cabin and the cargo bay are only separated by flags. The crew cabin is fully furnished with controls and two space seats, instead of being blank and empty. Due to limitations of the modern parts palette, the roof is blue instead of trans yellow. There is three point retractable landing gear. The doors in the aft fuselage are now large enough for minifigures to use them to access the cargo bay. The cargo bay is no longer tall enough to fit a rover with somebody sitting at the wheel, but it is otherwise much larger and more useful. It has 2 separate 6x6 cargo areas, letting it carry 2 small rovers, or a rover and a trailer (facing forward or facing backward), or 4 large crates and 6 small crates. Finally, I moved the fuselage-mounted engines lower so that the ship can now balance on them if you stand it on its end. That makes it what I call a well-balanced spaceship, like the 924 and the 918.
The XE-144 patrol craft is a state-of-the art one-man spacecraft from the same shipyard as the LL-144 interceptor.
To compensate for the lack of the classic lunar crater plates and landing plates, and to be more in line with the kind of large bases we see in large vehicle+base playsets these days, I based the ground installation that goes with the Galaxy Explorer on the 926 Moonbase instead of the small signal shack in the original 928 set. There's two brick built 16x16 crater plates, one of them with a flag planted on top and energy crystals buried beneath to dig for. The big building is the 926, the small utility box with the antenna on top is the signal shack from the 928. On the side it has a small cabinet to hold energy crystals, some simple storage tanks, and an electric vehicle charging cable for the lunar rover. The rover can pull a trailer, which can carry a large crate, which can hold two energy crystals. A small pipe bridge connects the small utility box with the big building. The big building has a ramp so the rover can drive up inside for the night, a ladder so the astronaut can climb on the roof, two small antennas (rather fragile, I'm afraid), a folding bed, lots of tools, and a big screen for doing important things. The front wall folds out and the roof lifts off for easy access to the interior.

Have you ever wondered what lies beyond the horizon of all those treacherous dunes on Classic Space box art? Well, heck if I know -- BUT I can ask you a better question: how does one get there? CERTAINLY not with 6mm offset tread wheels mind you! Legend has it, as you progress deeper and deeper into the dunes, the sediment becomes darker and redder. Some believe this is because of a rich resource which lies deep beneath it, some say it leads to treasure, and others may warn that is home to the Insectoids... Personally I think its because I only had so many options to work with for backgrounds -- BUT the answer is up to you!
------------------------------------------------------------------THE CRAWLER------------------------------------------------------------------
Back to the big question, how does one cross those dunes? Well, the nerds over at Classic Space HQ (trans-green edition) have the answer! They came up with the legendary idea of slapping the biggest tires possible on the 6901 Mobile Lab, but then quickly realized the tire itself was far bigger than the lab, so they had to resort to an increased budget. They searched far and wide for whatever traditional light gray pieces they could find and were able to create a behemoth lab crawler ready to challenge the dunes themselves. It is time to discover and research what lies beyond them!

I don't like these much. The delta wing design feels too plain here, and the others are overdoing the girder wing thing.
Here's the car on approach. You can see more of the landing pad. Although we discussed the idea of simply printing a big decal for the base plate, Scott convinced me that brick built was better.
I don't like these much, perhaps because they don't seem to do much (or have a clear role) despite being rather large.
I suppose the middle one (6880: Surface Explorer) has some potential with the wheels and articulated front arm and rear arm (obscured). The design feels a bit nonsensical with the inaccessible screen at the front. It would've been neat with an articulated turret on the back instead of a radar. I can see in the role of a prospecting vehicle for use in dangerous frontier systems.
The lab itself can fully detach for long-term research missions.

NeoClassic Space popping up in the Monkie Kid theme with Chang’e Moon Cake Factory
With the build-up to the release of the Galaxy Explorer 2022, I’m looking back at a few builds over the past year that harken back to Classic Space- NeoClassic Space
I’m not necessarily the demographic for this kit, but the neon transparent elements and color scheme caught my eye for MOC potential. When viewing it through the lens of a medium-sized spaceship from early ‘90s, I can appreciate the set as a compelling plaything.
The Bunny Mech, while not meant for minifigs, carries two intended bunny-pilots or a resting minifig. The butt of the ship can pop off to reveal either an energy fuel container or storage for valuables (if not just a microwave in a strange place).
The ship has interesting shaping, especially with the legs, and that great large dome element. Escape pod box gets checked. Stud-shooters are there to good effect as well.
The side-base, a moon cake factory, build is simplistic but charismatic and effective. There is a conveyor belt that might not be captured by my photos, which looks really good for the few elements used.
Simple carrot-rocket and hover-control station/Live-stream station are simple but effective small builds to add to the play value/storytelling.
A funny medium-sized kit with some good MOC potential. What do you think?
