Julio-Claudian Reliefs from reign of Claudius, 41-54 CE

Reliefs that have been associated with Ara Pietatis Augustae (Altar of Augustan Piety), Campus Martius, Rome; Kleiner, figs. 118-120.

Processional figures in togas, including flamen, to be identified as Silanus, or Caligula reworked as Claudius; Kleiner, fig. 118:

If you look at the figures on the relief center, you will see a individual with the physiognomy of Gaius Caligula on the left and the figure on the right has the physiognomy of the emperor Claudius? Kleiner mentions a recut from Caligula reworked or recut to Claudius? If that is Gaius Caligula on the left, does that date this relief to 37-41 A.D.? Anytime after his murder it would not make any sense, as there was not an official damnatio memoriae, but there sure was an unofficial one. Just food for thought?

Garland bowl, late 1st century B.C.–early 1st century A.D.; Augustan

Roman

Glass; H. 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm), Diam. 7 1/8 in. (18.1 cm)

Edward C. Moore Collection, Bequest of Edward C. Moore, 1891 (91.1.1402)

This bowl was cast using batches of different colored glass to create four roughly equal sections in translucent purple, yellow, blue, and colorless glass. On the interior is a lathe-cut groove just below the rim. The principal decoration comprises four hanging garlands of millefiori glass (59.11.6) fused to the upper surface of each quadrant. Few vessels made of large sections or bands of differently colored glass are known from antiquity, and this example is the only one that combines the technique with fused-on decoration. The bowl thus represents a masterpiece of glassmaking from the period when cast glass was beginning to be supplanted by vessels made using the newly invented technique of glassblowing.

Marcus Ambibulus: Roman knight, governor of Judaea (6-9 CE).

According to the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, Marcus Ambibulus was one of the Roman governors of Judaea. His tenure of office is usually dated between 6 and 9, although a slightly later date is possible. Although Josephus does not mention Ambibulus' exact titles, we know from an inscription found at Caesarea that one of his successors, Pontius Pilate, was a prefect, so we can assume that Ambibulus was a prefect too.

We know hardly anything about the man, although, as a prefect, he must have belonged to the equestrian order - the second class of the Roman elite, after the senators. He was appointed by the emperor Augustus and succeeded Coponius. Josephus writes:

Marcus Ambibulus came to be Coponius' successor. During his governorship, Salome, the sister of king Herod, died, and left to Livia Jamnia, all its toparchy, and Phasaelis in the plain, and Arehelais, with a great plantation of palm trees that offers fruit that is excellent in its kind. After Ambibulus came Annius Rufus.

[Flavius Josephus, Jewish Antiquities 18.31]

This is all we know about this Marcus Ambibulus. Probably, he did his job well, because a bad governor would have been faced with rebellion, something that Josephus is always eager to mention. His silence suggests that Ambibulus was a fine administrator.

Nero. AD 54-68. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.09 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 66-67. Laureate head right / Jupiter seated left, holding scepter and thunderbolt. RIC I 64; RSC 121.

This reverse type commemorates the protection of Nero from the Pisonian Conspiracy. Events of the years AD 64-65 defined the subsequent reputation of Nero as a cruel and self-indulgent ruler. His "excesses" resulted in a conspiracy to overthrow and replace him with Gaius Calpurnius Piso. Among the conspirators were many high-ranking members of Nero's court, including Seneca the Younger, the poet Lucan, and Petronius, who called himself Nero's "arbiter of elegance." To Nero, the failure of a conspiracy made up of those so close to him could have been achieved only through divine intervention. As the king of the Gods oversaw the security of the Roman state, Nero believed it was Jupiter the Guardian (Custos) who had saved him from harm. cngcoins.com

This issue was struck by Lepidus to commemorate the foundation of the Second Triumvirate, and was probably struck from the proceeds of the proscriptions in preparation for the campaign against Brutus and Cassius in 42 BC. Lepidus is shown with the title Pontifus Maximus, an office which he received after the assassination of Julius Caesar and held until his death in 12 BC.
