Augusta Academy, a classical school founded by the Presbyterian Church in 1749, began in the village of Timber Ridge, a few miles north of Lexington. Renamed Liberty Hall Academy, the school moved to Lexington in 1780 and granted its first bachelor's degree in 1785. During the lean years of the Revolutionary War, Liberty Hall suffered financially and nearly closed. The institution was rescued by an endowment of $20,000.00 in James River Canal Stock, contributed in 1796 by President George Washington. In honor of this donation, one of the largest gifts ever given to an educational institution at the time, the school was renamed Washington Academy, and in 1813 Washington College. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee accepted the appointment as president of Washington College. During his 5-year tenure, Lee transformed the school from a classical academy to a modern liberal arts school, establishing the engineering, journalism, and business schools and bringing a pre-existing law school into the college. When Lee died in 1870, the school was renamed Washington and Lee College.
