Late Classical period, ca. 340-330 BCE

Attributed to the Darius Painter

Found at Ruvo di Puglia (see Rubi on Pleiades) in a semi-chamber tomb south of the city (fondo Buccettolo, on today's Corso Carafa), in April 1834

The krater takes its name from the scene on Side A, which represents the funeral of the infant Opheltes at Nemea, later known as Archemoros ("beginning of doom", that is, presaging the defeat of the Seven against Thebes). On Side B, photographed here, is represented Herakles on his Labors in the west. Above is Atlas holding up the heavens, below the Garden of the Hesperides. The neck represents a Dionysiac revel. The vase bears a series of holes paired across fractures, which indicate that it was repaired in antiquity.

Purchased in August 1825

Nothing is included in a classical Chinese garden that doesn't symbolize something else. A classical Chinese garden is a powerful, living, natural, spiritual metaphor for many different virtues and values. Breathtaking. This garden is found in Vancouver, B.C.

The models shown here are our photographs of a Classical Mathematical Model Collection originally made by hand in the 1800's. These photographs were taken in 2012 during a vist to the Institute Henri Poincare in Paris. This was a follow up to my original visit to the institute in 1998.

Our digital rapid protoyping recreations of some of the models in these collection were originally exhibited at ACM SIGgraph as "Artifacts of Research: On Singularities".

Currently portions of the recreation are on display at the University of Goettingen Department of Mathematics, The University of Hong Kong Department of Mathematics, The Institute Poincare in Paris and at the Museum of Mathematics in Manhattan.

A classical church in the city - black and white lozenge tiles, galleries, dark woodwork, chandeliers - all the values of the eighteenth century London bourgeoisie, regularity and moderation and a certain confidence.
