"Above all music should touch the heart"
"Estavam ali parados. Marido e mulher.
Esperavam o carro.
O homem ouviu. Abriu a carteira tirou uma cédula,
entregou sem palavra.
A mulher ouviu. Perguntou, indagou, especulou, aconselhou,
e ensinar a paciência do pescador.
Você faria isso, Leitor?
Antes que tudo isso se fizesse
o desvalido não morreria de fome?
Conclusão:
Na prática, a teoria é outra."

Cubitt Sessions (annual series of free events).
Country: South Africa. Style: Western Classical Music - Opera (and some Popular Music).
Lineup: Catriona Hewitson (v [soprano]), Idunnu Münch (v [mezzo soprano]), Zwakele Tshabalala (v [tenor]), Alex Otterburn (v [baritone]),Chris Hopkins (p/director).
This concert was planned to feature four young singers associated with English National Opera. However, Sophie Bevan dropped out and was replaced by Catriona Hewitson of Scottish Opera. It was programmed by Chris Hopkins who is a conductor and pianist with ENO (and also works with the Orchestra of the City and the English Sinfonia), loosely around the theme "Once the Storm is Over". The songs took us from the calm before a storm to rebirth after it. Composers included Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, Handel and Wagner on the one hand and Gershwin, Arlen and Bernstein on the other.

Built in 1917, this Classical Revival-style building was constructed to serve as a school for Columbus, North Carolina and the surrounding area of Polk County. Initially known as the Columbus Institute, the school was renamed in 1919 to memorialize Ohio-born industrialist Frank Stearns, whom donated the land on which the school sits so that the building could be built. Initially serving as a school for all grades, the building saw the addition of a gymnasium building to the rear by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the construction of an agricultural and vocational building on the campus, along with decorative stone walls in the 1930s. Following the consolidation of the high school program, the school served as an elementary school for Columbus and the surrounding area of Polk County until it closed in 1988. The two-story building features a red brick exterior, hipped roof, central pedimented two-story front doric portico with paired doric columns and a circular attic vent, replacement windows, stone sills on the first floor, pilasters on the front facade, replacement brick spandrels at the front windows, a recessed front entry door with an alcove featuring an arched opening, enclosed vestibules at either end of the building, formerly open porches, which feature arched windows on the upper level stairwell vestibules, arched transoms above the first floor doors, and provide access to restrooms and the building’s two stairwells, a rear auditorium wing at the south end of the L-shaped building with partially bricked-in arched window openings and stone sills and lintels, and metal canopies extending out from the building towards the adjacent streets. After ceasing operations as a school in 1988, the main building was converted into the School Board offices for Polk County, and also serves as a community center, while the gymnasium was converted into a recreation center, and the grounds converted into a public park in front of the building and a school bus maintenance garage behind the building.

The Strings of the Gateshead Youth Orchestra rehearsing before their performance during the Avison Ensemble’s Family Concert. The Orchestra is directed by John Treherne MBE.
The Avison Ensemble continued its collaborations with young musicians in the North East region by presenting a Saturday afternoon Family Concert in the heart of Newcastle’s town centre in early October 2011. Performing at the Brunswick Methodist Chapel the Ensemble was joined by the Strings of the Gateshead Youth Orchestra and the Gateshead Viol Consort who performed lively works from the English Baroque period. The Avison Ensemble performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons on period instruments to coincide with the release of their new recording on Linn Records of Vivaldi's 12 Violin Concertos Opus 8.
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
The Ensemble’s Vivaldi recording is available from www.linnrecords.com
The Gateshead Youth Orchestra performs a very wide repertoire and aims to give young musicians the opportunity to perform a wide range of music from a variety of periods and styles. The Gateshead Viol Consort plays music written between 1550 and 1700.
