Class 302 unit No. 302207 passes Colchester working a special run to Clacton

Much improved and rebooted.

Class 302 unit no 284 passes Ripple Lane yard with a Tilbury line service for London Fenchurch Street. Note the contrast between 'heavily industrial' (railway yard, pylons galore) and Thames marsh 'pastoral' (cattle grazing). Behind the concrete ramp on the left can be seen locos of classes 31, 37 and 47.

On 16 April 1986, 302277 passes the disused LTS platforms at Bromley-by-Bow on the 1550 Southend Central - Fenchurch Street via Tilbury. Note the disused lamp post on the right.

Network Southeast Class 302 unit No. 302225 departs Grays working a Fenchurch Street to Southend service

The unit is in British Rail blue and grey, with just a little Network SouthEast flash stuck on above the headcode window.

112 class AM2 units were built by Doncaster and York Works from 1958 to 1960. The first units were always used on the Great Eastern route to Southend with the remainder on the London, Tilbury and Southend route from Fenchurch Street.

Class 302 EMU 302279 at Shoeburyness

Late 1982 - Tipped off that they were being stored in sidings in Colchester pending disposal. Like several enthusiasts took pictures kindly unchallenged but unfortunately there was an armed raid for copper etc. within a ouple of days of these pictures and a railman was hurt. Suspect many visited them. I had been travelling regularly on these from 1956 to 1967 between Romford and Seven Kings with occasional trips to Liverpool Street until their withdrawl.

These units introduced onto the the London, Tilbury and Southend routes in 1958 and lasted in service untill 1999, so this was an early casualty.

75250 along with fellow Mangapps preserved Class 302 DTSO coach 75033 were built at British Railways Eastleigh Works in 1958 and withdrawn from traffic by the newly privatised London Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTS) along with the rest of the Class in 1999.

The ubiquitous blue seat trim shown here will date back to the British Rail Network SouthEast era of 1987-1994

Incredibly out of the 112 Class 302 trainsets and 448 coaches built, only Mangapps based coaches 75250 and 75033 were preserved after withdrawal from service. All the others were scrapped.

LTS class 302 unit 302228 runs through Bethnal Green on its way to Liverpool St on a diverted service from Shoeburyness on a dull 22nd February 1997.

I suspect the controller was playing today as it was unusual to see class 302's on a Saturday. However, this day, the service was run completely by 302's!

Though they were introduced on the L, T & S, the class 302s also found work on services from Liverpool Street. 302225 stands at Bethnal Green with a GE local service.
