Late 1982 - Tipped off that they were being stored in sidings in Colchester pending disposal. Like several enthusiasts took pictures kindly unchallenged but unfortunately there was an armed raid for copper etc. within a ouple of days of these pictures and a railman was hurt. Suspect many visited them. I had been travelling regularly on these from 1956 to 1967 between Romford and Seven Kings with occasional trips to Liverpool Street until their withdrawl.

On 25 February 1984, 302237 arrives at Grays on a Fenchurch Street - Southend train.

How it used to be on the LTS line; on 16 September 1985 302229 leaves Southend Central on the 1320 to Fenchurch Street via Tilbury.

A fine array of 4 different classes of emu in the east side trainshed at Liverpool Street on the afternoon of 28 March 1980. The nearest are 624 and 202, but I am not sure about those in platforms 17 and 18.

These units were first introduced in 1958 on the Tilbury line from Fenchurch Street, and were refurbished in the early-80s.. Three units were later converted for Post Office use, and the remaining units were taken out of service in 1999.

Two driving trailers have been preserved, at the Mangapps Farm Railway Museum, in Essex.

Today, some of this location is part of the 2012 Olympic complex..

By the time I started to cover units more frequently in my bashing endeavours the original 100 or so Class 302 units had been wittled down to a mere 28 units operating on the LTS.

They had started life working out of Liverpool St on services like the Southend Victoria and Enfields. Despite an extensive refurb in the 80's they were starting to show their age in the 90's and not an image a newly franchaised operator wanted to protray.

Ther use by the mid 90's had been curtailed to Rush hour services (but they could be seen outside the paeks and even Saturdays if the right people were in control).

Covering the last few units for haulage could be a nightmare as being rush hour trains the stopping patterns were odd and ran to many places non stop.

302216 brings up the rear of a service to Southend and is seen departing Pitsea, after a signal stop which allowed me to bail and get back in zone a bit quicker than intended. The guard was not amused!

Class 302 unit no 284 passes Ripple Lane yard with a Tilbury line service for London Fenchurch Street. Note the contrast between 'heavily industrial' (railway yard, pylons galore) and Thames marsh 'pastoral' (cattle grazing). Behind the concrete ramp on the left can be seen locos of classes 31, 37 and 47.
