The AM2 (later class 302) electric units were built in 1958/9 at York and Doncaster Works for services on the south Essex lines from London Fenchurch Street but some later moved to Ilford depot for outer-suburban trains. Unit 213 is seen at Ingatestone on 22 March 1980 apparently running empty to Colchester, possibly after working a morning peak service to London. The final units of the class would be withdrawn in 1998.
Perhaps the most colourful livery carried by a GE electric unit, the red unit is a Class 302 EMU converted for Royal Mail service. Not really sure what the sister unit in blue/grey is - was it regular passenger stock coupled to the Mail set for a depot working, or is it another set converted for non-passenger use?
On 16 September 1985, 302257 arrives at Purfleet on an up service. The Midland Railway signalbox is no more.
BR AM2 - Class 302 - EMUs at Fenchurch Street station, in the mid-1970s, with unit 273 nearest the camera..
Some Class 302s were converted to postal units in the 1990s, and two driving trailer cars have been preserved, after the other remaining units were scrapped in 1999.
The station was refurbished in the 1980s, and rebuilt in the 1990s, and only the original street frontage remains.

These had first entered service in 1959 on the pioneering Colchester – Clacton 25kV line, and later most moved to the ex-LT&S lines out of Fenchurch Street..
They later became BR Class 302, and were refurbished in the 1980s, and the last unit was withdrawn from passenger service in 1998, and two driving trailer cars have been preserved..
Today (2025) the then-new signal box on the left is still in place, but disused, and passenger services are operated by London Overground..

By the time I started to cover units more frequently in my bashing endeavours the original 100 or so Class 302 units had been wittled down to a mere 28 units operating on the LTS.
They had started life working out of Liverpool St on services like the Southend Victoria and Enfields. Despite an extensive refurb in the 80's they were starting to show their age in the 90's and not an image a newly franchaised operator wanted to protray.
Ther use by the mid 90's had been curtailed to Rush hour services (but they could be seen outside the peaks and even Saturdays if the right people were in control).
302227 and 302203 depart Fenchurch St with a rush hour service on 3rd April 1996.

The blue-painted carriages on the right are actually driving trailers of former Class 302 electric multiple units, which operated commuter services between London Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria and London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness. They date back to around 1958.

Another "in and out" station on the London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness line. Built to serve the many passenger steamship services that departed from Tilbury docks. For many years dedicated boat trains from London St Pancras taking the route via Kentish Town and Barking. In addition, Tilbury Riverside provided connections with the ferry service to Gravesend in Kent which for many years run by British Rail shipping division (Sealink) until 1984.
At the time of this visit on 28 January 1984, most EMU worked trains took the route through Tilbury Riverside although by 1986 other than a few peak hour trains, the station was served by a shuttle service from Upminster via Grays. The station was finally closed in 1992 and the surrounding area has ironically been redeveloped into the London Cruise Terminal. Passengers are now advised to access the terminal via a taxi from nearby Tilbury Town station.
Seen here is class 302 no. 302240 having arrived on the on a service from London Fenchurch Street. Class 302 EMUS (previously AM2) were delivered in the late 1950s and spent their entire life on services back and forth from London to Shoeburyness. They were all withdrawn by 1999 being replaced for a few years by class 310 EMUs. Nowadays the services are in the hands of class 357 Electrostar units.
