302209 on the rear of another class 302 unit passing through Upminster at speed on 15/Mar/1993.
At this time the once 112-strong class was down to about 30 or so refurbished units and 302209 was one of a few in NSE livery.
Apologies for the speed blur, I didn't really stand a chance on such a dull day with the film I had in the camera!

No.230 (later No.302 230) in Rail Blue & Grey livery with all yellow front end, speeding past Bethnal Green on a Liverpool St. - Southend (Victoria) service, 03/76. Scanned slide taken on an Exacta.
Though they were introduced on the L,T & S services, some class 302s also found work on services from Liverpool Street. 302599 stands at Bethnal Green with a GE local service.
Having just done the Hertfordshire Rail Tours 'Old Father Thames' tour on Thursday 29 December which visited Tilbury Riverside, here is a picture taken on a Network Day of 302217 at Tilbury Riverside. Also out was 302207 in green, but my shot is not very good, so not included. The railtour got within 4 chains of the original station.

A class 302 four-car electric multiple unit 302216 pulls into Grays Railway Station on the journey to London Fenchurch Street Station. Whilst living in the area for a short space of time I got to hear about the poor reputation of the rail service on this London, Tilbury & Southend route, but apart from the uncomfortable ride on these units, they kept good time whilst I was there - maybe I just got lucky. I do remember that the external cleanliness of the paintwork was not always matched by the interior upholstery which was often quite filthy.
The photo was taken from the footbridge; twenty years on and the signal box has gone to be replaced by a lineside cabinet but the graffiti on the brickwork remains. There is also the opportunity to cross the line here via a gate provided no train is coming.
By the time I started to cover units more frequently in my bashing endeavours the original 100 or so Class 302 units had been wittled down to a mere 28 units operating on the LTS.
They had started life working out of Liverpool St on services like the Southend Victoria and Enfields. Despite an extensive refurb in the 80's they were starting to show their age in the 90's and not an image a newly franchaised operator wanted to protray.
Ther use by the mid 90's had been curtailed to Rush hour services (but they could be seen outside the paeks and even Saturdays if the right people were in control).
Here 302226 and 225 stand at Leigh on Sea with services for Fenchurch St. 302226 and 302223 had just arrived on the 1305 from Fenchurch St and is waiting to return whilst 302225 was on its way back to the Capital from Shoeburyness. 27th May 1997
Another record shot only really I'm afraid, sees class 302 set no. 305 at Tilbury Riverside on 13/Sep/1980, back in the days when this station still had a service which connected with the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry. The station closed on 30/Nov/1992.
I'm not sure if the unit was actually going to Thorpe Bay or if that destination setting was left over from it's last run.

Ex-works class 302 unit 302299 stands at Clapham Junction, no doubt in transit from Eastleigh back to the Tilbury lines.
A class 302 electric hurries towards London Fenchurch Street. It is about to cross the Stratford-North Woolwich line - at that time two tracks for passenger trains and one (maybe two?) for freight. Subsequently low-level platforms were built to create an interchange with the District and Hammersmith & City Lines. Today the lines on the left are part of the Docklands Light Railway and Jubilee Line, and West Ham is an important interchange station with platforms for ex-LT&S Fenchurch Street-Shoeburyness line services too.
Note the BR sign (even though only London transport trains served the station) on the bridge showing 'West Ham - Manor Road'. The station was officially called this from 1924 to 1969, although LT always referred to it simply as 'West Ham'.

The 15th of September 1962 at Thorpe Bay and heading for Shoeburyness is AM2/Class 302 EMU set 257 lead by E75320 (i think). The class 302s were new introduced in 1959 and I think worked until 1988 although a few survived as Royal Mail units until 1998.

Late 1982 - Tipped off that they were being stored in sidings in Colchester pending disposal. Like several enthusiasts took pictures kindly unchallenged but unfortunately there was an armed raid for copper etc. within a ouple of days of these pictures and a railman was hurt. Suspect many visited them. I had been travelling regularly on these from 1956 to 1967 between Romford and Seven Kings with occasional trips to Liverpool Street until their withdrawl.

A unique set: BR(ER) Standard Mk.I Class "302" (originally Class "AM2") originally 1,500 v dc overhead, later 25k v ac overhead 4-car outer suburban e.m.u. No.(302) 244 in BR Rail Blue livery and all yellow front end nearing Shoeburyness on a service from Fenchurch St. via Tilbury. The notable thing about this set is that the Driving Trailer Open Second pictured is from a BR (LMR) ex-1,200V DC 3rd rail Class 504 Manchester - Bury 2-car emu, the change presumably being the result of accident damage. Scanned slide taken with an Exacta.
