An LMS design, but built by British Railways in 1952, 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter 12131 is seen awaiting restoration at Sheringham on the North Norfolk Railway
Assigned Class 11 by BR, 12131 was a Fenland locomotive, based at March, Ely and Cambridge before being withdrawn in March 1969 and sold to the National Coal Board; moving to Snowdon Colliery in Kent and arriving on the NNR railway shortly before this picture was taken

It was moved to the Severn Valley Railway in March 1990.

Several ex-BR and industrial locomotives were present at the Booth-Roe Metals scrapyard at Rotherham on 22nd May 1989, but this was the most visible example. Class 11 No.12099 was introduced into service from BR Derby Works in March 1952 and saw use from many LMR depots, including Nottingham and Willesden, before joining the N.C.B. fleet, visiting Wales and Yorkshire prior to arriving ay Booth's scrapyard from Bowers Row Disposal Point, in the company of another ex-NCB loco, 'N.C.B. D8', Rolls Royce works No.10257 built in 1966. 12099 was sold on to the Severn Valley Railway in 1990 and is usually employed as the Kidderminster yard shunter. The 'Sentinel' loco was not so fortunate, and being of non-BR pedigree was unceremoniously broken up.

Victorian Railways ordered 10 5'3" gauge shunters from English Electric in 1951, which were very similar to the BR (LMS) class11 and Netherlands 600 series which were also being built at Preston around that time.
Six identical locos were then ordered in 1952 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to shunt various coal yards, but these were steadily sold to VR over the years to be amalgamated into their fleet.
This example was originally SEC3 and the first to be sold to VR in 1956, it was also one of the last to be withdrawn from service in 1986, and is now preserved at the Newport Railway Museum in Melbourne, seen there in 2000 while being repainted. Visual differences from the class 11 include the lack of buffers, a central buckeye coupler with cowcatchers below, side safety boards covering the running gear, and of course sunshades over the cab windows!
Six of the original 16 have been preserved.

R4374. Nicely posed with the rods down, Class 11 2-8-2 No.938 at De Aar Motive Power Depot. The Class 11s were built by the North British Locomotive company in 1904 but, unlike many other early classes, they were not rebuilt with standard boilers and remained as built throughout their lives.
This one is nicely presented and bears the unofficial name ‘Gracie’; clearly she is one of the driver’s pet engine.

Mr Chris Guntripp. Featuring in 'Deadman's Handle' photographs since 1975! Specifically, 'The Atlantic Coast Express' rail tour at Exeter! We didn't know each other then and I suspect he knows that many folk that we're both vague in each other's memories! We seem to cross paths a lot over the last 40 years!

Ex Sheerness Steel 08216 is seen at the South Yorkshire Railway Meadowhall on the 27th of April 1996, it is next to Class 11 12088.

12088 is preserved at the Aln Valley Railway
12138 at Lindsey West sidings in 1956.
This model was released by Hornby in 1956 and was produced for 3 years.
This particular model has been detailed and renumbered to show 12138.
Although the model was released by Hornby as a Class 08 the body design is more related to the earlier designs and follows the lines of the Class 11 quite well.
Hornby dropped this body design and went on to produce a retoolled version of the bodywork which more closely resembles the 08 as we know it.
Still a good runner for its age. (60 years old now) 1:76 Scale. OO Gauge.
Part of my collection.
12138 was the final Class 11 type shunter to be built as part of a batch at Darlington.
The British Rail Class 11 was applied to a batch of diesel shunting locomotives built from April 1945 to December 1952, which were based on earlier locomotives built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) between 1934 and 1936.
Capable of 20mph, these locomotives were used for trip and short workings, not just for shunting and proved to be versatile machines.
