On 25th March 1986 ex-BR class 11 No.12074 stands as spare locomotive at Swalwell Disposal Point operated by Johnson's (Chopwell) Ltd at Dunston-upon-Tyne. Introduced into BR service from Derby Works in September 1950 and withdrawn from Chester shed during January 1972, the loco served in industrial service in the North East for many years before being bought by Harry Needle and subsequently broken up by HNRC at EMR Kingsbury in July 2002.

Ex-BR class 10 D3452 is seen at English China Clay's Fowey plant on a baking hot 7th August 1976. An interesting wagon turntable is in the foreground of this Instamatic shot.

This was during a 2 week All Line Rover, where we took a bus from Par station specially to see this and the others on site D3476 and D3497. Wish we'd taken our sunglasses as the china clay dust everywhere was blinding !

D3452 was originally an ER machine but moved to Toton from where it was withdrawn in 1968 as the class 10s were considered non standard. It was sold into industrial service here in Cornwall where it worked for 20 years, before being saved by the Bodmin & Wenford Railway trust who have repainted it into early BR black livery.

LMS-designed BR Class 11 no. 12099 propels the stock for a later run into Kidderminster Town's western siding.

One of their two ex-BR class 11 shunters is seen with the engine out for overhaul. This is the former D12093, sold into industrial service in 1971 when withdrawn from BR and operated here until 1988 when it and classmate D12052 moved northwards for preservation at the Caledonian Railway at Brechin.

Seen at Wigan North Western on the 27th of May 1971, Class 11 D12051 is down as allocated to Allerton at the time although Springs Branch seems more likely. Built in 1949 this was its last year of operation.

Class 11s, 0-6-0, 12052 & 093 of the Brechin Railway Preservation Society rest on platform 2 of Brechin Railway Station on Sunday 15th December 2019 with the carriages of the Santa Special in the background.

Here is one of my very early picture's taken at Bescot, it.s a bit grainy with not much depth of field but it was the only time I photographed a Class 11 shunter 12087 was new to Carlisle December 1950, withdrawn July 1971. 12056 new to Toton July 1949 and withdrawn October 1971, here they they are standing in the Yard at Bescot Depot 25/03/1973.

This ex LMS shunter was withdrawn in July 1970, whilst allocated to Chester. It was then sold to the NCB for further use in the South Wales collieries. This photograph at Cardiff Canton, was taken during this period of NCB use. It was finally cut up at AR Adams in Newport, Gwent, in April 1984.

Built by MAVAG in Budapest, Hungary, in 1947, Yugoslavian Railways (JZ) class 11 4-8-0 No.11-022 was one of three locos set aside to haul President Tito's 'blue train' and bore the blue livery for that purpose. It is now plinthed outside Belgrade Central station. The class 11s were one of the largest and most successful series of steam locomotives on the network of former JZ and the fleet total was 365. Most of them worked in Croatia, where they hauled express and semi-fast passenger trains on routes from Zagreb until replaced by the class 661 diesel-electrics in the 1960s, but continued in use on freight duties until 1981. 11-022 was withdrawn from service in December 1978.

Another shot of the breaking up going on at Chester on the 7th of November 1969 after the runaway goods train (the 02.25 Birkenhead - Etruria iron ore train, weighing approximately 1,000 tons and hauled by D1617 on the 9th of July) entered the depot. The shunters are present as I think it was a convenient to get rid of them at the same time. The 24's withdrawn were D5031, D5043, D5093, D5138 and D5139 . If anyone can identift the shunter numbers please let me know.

NSF no.6 and former British Railways class 11 no.12071 stands idle at Aberaman Coke Works with mechanical failure. This loco was withdrawn by BR in 10/1971 and sold to the National Coal Board and initially saw use at the nearby Nantgarw Coke Works. It moved to Aberaman in 1987 when Nantgarw closed and saw use until stopped by mechanical failure. It was removed to C.F. Booths scrapyard in Rotherham in in July 1990 but escaped the breakers and entered preservation initially with the South Yorks Railway Preservation Society at Meadowhall. Alas it was then used as a source of spares to restore sister 12082 and was finally broken up in June 1995 by Coopers Metals Ltd, Sheffield at their Attercliffe breakers yard.

A very derelict LMS class 11 shunter, 12122 with class 03 D2049 behind it at British Oak disposal point, Crigglestone, 9th June 1985. This loco was visited again 3 months after these photos where taken, when more photos were taken by John and myself. They will appear in due course.

As well as concentrating on the BR shunter fleet, BREL Swindon Works used to undertake full revisions of some ex-BR locomotives previously sold out of service for industrial use. On the occasion of my visit to the works on 5th October 1980 ex-BR class11 shunter No.12071, in a rather pleasing light-green and yellow livery, was receiving attention. At this time it was owned by National Smokeless Fuels Ltd, Nantgarw Works, Treforest, Glamorgan and bore their fleet number '6'. It later moved to Aberaman Phurnacite Plant, Abercwmboi before being sold to CF Booth, Rotherham for scrap in 1990.

Prior to its sale by BR in December 1972, 12071 was a well travelled locomotive on BR. Its charmed career continued for a short while longer, as it was sold by Booths to the South Yorkshire Railway Society at Meadowhall, but only as a source of spares and was finally cut up at Cooper's Metals Ltd, Sheffield, in June 1995.

The British Railways class 11's were a LMS design, being built from 1945-1953. The pre-BR built locomotives were allocated LMS 71xx numbers with 12033 - 12044 being originally LMS 7120 to 7131. Then BR allocated 12xxx numbers from 1948 onwards, therefore locos 12045 - 12138 carried the12xxx numbers from new. This class was one of the few diesel locos not to be allocated a 'D' prefix under the 1957 renumbering scheme.

12099 was new to Nottingham shed in 1952, being withdrawn from Bletchley shed in 1969, it was then used by the NCB in South Wales & West Yorkshire, having survived a visit to CF Booth at Rotherham, it was preserved at the SVR in 1990.

D3201 was new as 13201 to Polmadie shed in 1960, being withdrawn from Lincoln shed in 1980. It was then used by Sheerness Steel until being sold for preservation in 1995.

SNCB/NMBS/NS: at this time some Benelux trains were still towed by SNCB Class 11 electric locomotives. We see a train from Bruxelles to Amsterdam leaving the station with a set of ICRm cars. While the locomotive and the driving car still retain the "Benelux" decor, all intermediate cars are already painted with the colors of "NS Hispeed".

Nantgarw Coking Plant was situated near Treforest, in the lower reaches of Taff Vale and was connected to the by then-truncated ex-Cardiff Railway line north of the site of Nantgarw Low Level halt. In the early 1970s Some BR surplus Class '11' BR Derby-built 0-6-0 diesel-electrics replaced the Hunslet 'Austerity' locos previously synonymous with Coking Plant. On 28th April 1987, 12071, 12063 and 12061 stand out of use at the closed plant, their reign in use there proving to be just short of a decade.

The last I heard 12122 had moved on to preservation and was sited at the Severn Valley Railway. As for the British Oak installement this is now long gone and is fast returning to nature.
