Grease, oil, muck and other general clag on shunter 'Redcar' at Grosmont shed.
The shunter has an interesting history being built to the specification of a BR Class 11 for ICI for use at Wilton, where it acquired the name 'Redcar'. After a few years at the Mid Hants railway it now lives a little closer to it's original home on the NYMR providing shunting duties around the engine sheds.

Churchward 2-6-2 tank 4566 is stabled in the sidings at Bewdley station,on the Severn Valley Railway.
Waiting to depart with a shuttle service to Kidderminster are a pair of shunting locos,12099 and D3201 - 2.10.15.
This picture appeared in Modern Rail Album, one of two Bradford Barton volumes edited by A.W. Hobson for the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle. in that book it was well reproduced with only a little of the left hand side cut. The problems of print to ink reproduction meant a loss of contrast but no gain in detail, much of the sky being lost, it may be that Peter sent a print which lacked this already.
Here is the picture scanned; The view is a late afternoon in November 1970, it shows D117 waiting for a class 11 shunter and train to cross in front of it. The Peak was working a freight to Bescot yard and the crewe have taken advantage of the stop to stretch their legs.
D117 was a Crewe built locomotive, new to Derby 09/09/1961, under TOPS it became 45130 in June 1974. The loco was withdrawn 10/05/1987 and cut by M.C. Metals at Springburn 03/06/1993.

Nantgarw colliery and coke works, Mid Glamorgan, 28th February 1987.
Both closed in November 1986, leaving their motive power redundant.
First in the line is No.7, Hunslet 6973 of 1968, then the three Derby 1949/1950 built class 11's, No.6 (12071), No.5 (12063), No.4 (12071).
None of the class 11's survived.
@a-Hertogenbosch: at the head of an overnight car sleeper train 27/05/91.
The first coach is an Italian sleeper and the last 2 look to be in SNCF livery so assume this was heading to France then Italy.

British Railways 350hp 0-6-0DE (later TOPS Class 11) diesel shunter 12114 on the hump at Inward Yard, Hull - c.1953.
The Darlington Works built (1952) shunter (almost certainly carrying BR black livery) was new to Dairycoates (53A) depot and survived in BR service until 1970, but not long enough to receive a TOPS number.

A selection of early diesel shunters at Crewe South shed, in the mid-60s..
On the left is 12055, which entered service in 1949, and was withdrawn in July 1971, and scrapped in May 1972. Behind that is ex-LMS jackshaft-driven 12031, which entered service in July 1942, and was withdrawn at the end of 1967, and scrapped in July 1968. Also on shed are a BR Sulzer Type 2 - later Class 25 - and Class 08 shunter, and LMS Stanier 'Black 5' 4-6-0, and Ivatt 'Flying Pig' 2-6-0..
Crewe South shed closed in November 1967, and today (2016) the site is partially overgrown with trees and bushes, but there are still some freight sidings in use..

Ex-BR class11 12084 is seen shunting loaded coal hoppers at NCB Bates Colliery, Blyth in late 1981.
Built in 1950, this loco spent most of its working life at Carlisle before withdrawal from Crewe in 1971 and subsequent sale to the NCB North East area who finally scrapped it at their Philadelphia workshops in Co Durham in 1985.
Tilburg: arriving with IC4646 12:55 Roosendaal to Zwolle 27/05/90.
The train is formed of Belgian stock which at that time was on hire from SNCB.
Eindhoven: the driver takes a break on the platform waiting for departure time whilst working IC2519 13:45 Den Haag CS to Köln-Deutz 29/05/1990
No date or location came with this but we think it's probably Stratford in the 50's.
The loco in view is Class 11 12111 which was new from Darlington Works to Stratford in July 1952. Withdrawl was in May 1971 and the loco was cut up on at Stratford where we think it spent it's whole life.

The 4th of January 1970 at Crewe and in view is Class 11 Shunter 12055.
The loco was new to BR in July 1949 from Derby Works at a cost of £15,412. It was withdrawn from Crewe in July 1971 and cut up at Booth's in Rotherham in May 1972.
Next to the Class 11 is an LMS Brake Van, and behind an LMS Parcels Van.

Thought to have been taken at Old Oak Common c1966 he have Class 11 shunter 12049 and Hymek D7026.
12049 was new from Derby Works to Crewe South on the last day of 1949 and withdrawn in October 1971. After industrial use the loco was preserved by the Mid Hants but was unfortunately destroyed by a fire inside the carriage works in 2010 and the remains cut up by EMR Kingsbury.
The Mid Hants have replaced it with 12082 which was working last Friday.

R2903. J.Z. 4-8-0 (MAV) 11-015. The JZ 11 class were the Hungarian class 424 which originated in 1924. Because of their success in Yugoslavia, a further batch was ordered from Hungarian builders and these were delivered between then and 1955.

AD878 was at the Longmoor Military Railway, and was named 'Basra'.
However, the railway lists it as AD601 (and the number 7120*).
* but didn't 7120 become 12033, which was cut up in May 1970

Former North Eastern Railway "Sand" van 901525 being shunted by Class 11 0-6-0DE 12115 (built Darlington 1952) at King George Dock, Hull - 10/10/1964.
Remarkably this van remained in this exact position for another twenty years. I photographed it here on 22/07/1984 - see: flic.kr/p/ddXyqM - it disappeared soon afterwards.

A Mankato-bound UP manifest freight prepares to depart Hoffman Yard while the CP Dresser Turn approaches the CB&Q style signals at Hoffman Interlocking on the BNSF St. Paul Sub. Meanwhile, an eastbound BNSF oil train meets the two westbounds ruining my chances of snagging solid CP power in good afternoon light. At least this photo shows the nonstop action at this iconic location! September 2019

There were a few 08's in the range D3070-9 allocated in Hull at the time so can't guess the 08 identity!

Ex-BR class 10 D3452 is seen at English China Clay's Fowey plant on a baking hot 7th August 1976. An interesting wagon turntable is in the foreground of this Instamatic shot.
This was during a 2 week All Line Rover, where we took a bus from Par station specially to see this and the others on site D3476 and D3497. Wish we'd taken our sunglasses as the china clay dust everywhere was blinding !
D3452 was originally an ER machine but moved to Toton from where it was withdrawn in 1968 as the class 10s were considered non standard. It was sold into industrial service here in Cornwall where it worked for 20 years, before being saved by the Bodmin & Wenford Railway trust who have repainted it into early BR black livery.
