Some more details from the building I've recently taken completion of, having acted as client/sponsor for my employer. It is very large, and very specialised, with large blank façades, so I agreed the architect's recommendation that we clad the outside like this with cedar planks from sustainable sources. The result is quite impressive....

Seems like modern buildings are a bit flimsy nowadays. The apparent brickwork is actually cladding.

"A road in Loughborough is set to stay closed for weeks after “dangerous” loose cladding was reported on a building. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) taped off The Coneries at the Cradock Street junction, near the town centre, yesterday morning, Wednesday, January 24, after receiving several calls from members of the public.

Scaffolding was put up around the building so work can take place to make it safe. LFRS said it had contacted the landlord of the privately owned building and had spoken to him about “getting the cladding removed". Using shears, I trim the clad down to the board's size plus some padding around the periphery of the design.

I follow up with 0000-grade steel wool to remove any dirt and oil from the surface, after which I no longer handle the clad with my hands. (Finger/hand oils interfere with the ferric chloride bath.) Instead, I use small pliers to manipulate the clad after I've cleaned it.

Lastly, I use alcohol to clean up any steel dust left behind from the steel wool scrubbing.
