Visualisation showing the cladding concept.

Four models of morphological differentiation. If differentiation occurs instantaneously, there are three possible models of how differentiation may evolve at branching events (cladogenesis). From left to right: (a) under cryptic speciation the two daughter lineages are morphologically identical to their ancestor; (b) with budding cladogenesis, a single daughter lineage is undifferentiated from the ancestor while the other daughter is distinguishable as a separate morphotaxon based on systematic characters; (c) bifurcating cladogenesis produces two daughter lineages which are both recognizably different relative to their ancestor. The fourth pattern of differentiation shown here is repeated events of anagenesis, which is differentiation unassociated with branching. Branching is depicted identically across these figures to contrast the morphological patterns alone and does not reflect discontinuity of populations.

Visually striking rainscreen cladding panels from Proteus Facades have helped to transform a building on London’s historic Hoxton Square, which is undergoing major refurbishment as part of a high-profile expansion project.

Aviva, a British multinational insurance company and pensions provider, identified Hoxton Square as the ideal location to create a campus of offices and relocate its Digital Garage; a dedicated space where technical specialists, creative designers and business leaders collaborate to develop new ideas and services. As part of the development, known as Project Drum, Aviva purchased 28-30 Hoxton Square along with other buildings in the area.

28-30 Hoxton Square required a substantial level of refurbishment, which created the opportunity to extend the property to increase capacity and improve accessibility and the layout between two front facing blocks. Architects TTSP redesigned the three-storey structure, with an entirely new floor added to the front and rear elevations as well as the demolition of a single storey centre, which was rebuilt to four storeys.

A major part of the brief given to TTSP was to ensure that historic structural elements of the building were retained and left exposed whilst all new visible external elements were over-clad to harmonise with the original features. Working closely with TTSP, Proteus Facades provided support with the design of the rainscreen cladding system to ensure this challenge was met.

Proteus HR TECU Patina Madrid panels, installed by Openwood Facades Ltd, were chosen for the double height storey which sits atop of the central part of the building, with architectural fins to the south elevations and window frames designed to match. The patterned copper finish of the Proteus material perfectly complements the colours and textures of the surrounding buildings, whilst staying in keeping with the heritage of the original site that dates to the 1700s.

Proteus HR VM Zinc Quartz rainscreen cladding was also specified for the roof level of 28- 30 Hoxton Square, which provides a long, maintenance-free life and offers adaptability to various design styles ranging from traditional to modern.

Proteus HR was specified for both the TECU Patina Madrid and VM Zinc Quartz materials at Hoxton because it is a lightweight, strong and versatile cladding panel that creates an optically flat aesthetic that is highly suited for building facades. The integrated modular rainscreen system features an aluminium honeycomb core, structurally bonded between two thin gauges of lightweight metal skin to create an optically flat panel that is available in aluminium, steel, zinc, stainless steel, copper alloys and other materials.

To mirror the design of the external façade, Proteus HR TECU Patina Madrid panels were also specified for use on a double-width lift lobby, which acts as a bright and bold mid-section connecting various internal departments, including a state-of-the-art AV centre.

In addition, Proteus Facades supplied mesh screens fixed to windows along the rear elevation in a Polyester Powder Coated (PPC) finish, which remains a popular choice with architects because of its long-term performance and cost benefits.

The BISF house was one of several types of houses built using non-traditional methods in an attempt to meet increased demand for housing in the years following the Second World War. The main structure is of steel columns spaced to take standard metal windows between them. The central spine of the building which supports the first floor beams is carried on tubular steel columns. The framework is clad on the lower storey with rendering on metal lath. The outer cladding of the upper floor is of steel trussed sheeting fixed by angles to the steel columns. The inner cladding and the partitions are constructed of timber framing faced with plasterboard. Floors are of timber and the ceilings are finished with plasterboard. The outer walls and ceilings are insulated with glass quilting.

The 250m2 building features an attractive PermaRock pacific blue exterior, with striking aesthetics that complement the neighbouring day centre for the elderly. The rear of the building features an attractive Western red cedar finish that further enhances its aesthetics close to the outside play area.

The wall panels were produced to a bespoke design, with a special height and width to meet the very specific requirements of the build. The modular building features overhanging trusses, which create a canopy and it also has a hipped roof that complements the aesthetics of the day centre next door. In addition, there is a void in the roof trusses where the building’s services are stored.

I love this one, my friend Lila looks a little lost in this one. lol

Large reading lounge window with Oxford University in reflection. In the new library & rooms the use of concrete was fundamental to the design of the building, both in structure and in cladding. A mixture of insitu & precast concrete was used, both cast on site in purpose made framework; the concrete colour was carefully matched to the prevailing Clipham stonework of the existing Jacobean college.

The modern-clad exterior of the British Museum's circular Reading Room, contrasting with a neighbouring centuries-older stone column in the Great Court at the centre of the museum.

The museum was established in 1753 and opened on its current site in 1759, with the Reading Room constructed in 1857. It continued as the main reading space of the British Library until 1997, until that function moved to the new British Library building in nearby St Pancras. The once open quadrangle in which it stands was redeveloped in the late-1990s and enclosed with a tessellated glass roof. It was formally opened in 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II, to who the court is dedicated.

This is my new second favourite place in London; if they moved the statue of St John Betjeman from St Pancras International Station to here and also started operating Eurostar trains to Paris and Brussels, it would probably become my absolute favourite. Walking through from the Greek Revival columned main entrance, you are confronted by a vast, light and airy courtyard of wonderfully harmonious old and modern architecture, with brilliant glittering white stone contrasting with the dark angular shadows thrown by the sun through the roof. It is a place alive with people of all ages; walking, talking, sitting, exploring, contemplating, taking pictures and being fascinated by the exhibits. Many though are just staring at the surroundings and the roof in wonder. “Wow” is a word you hear uttered a lot in the Great Court. And I love it…
