The site of the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial in France was selected because of its historic location along the route of the U.S. Seventh Army's drive up the Rhone Valley. It was established on August 19, 1944 after the Seventh Army's surprise landing in southern France.

On 12.5 acres at the foot of a hill clad with the characteristic cypresses, olive trees, and oleanders of southern France, rest 851 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the liberation of southern France in August 1944. Their headstones are arranged in straight lines, divided into four plots, and grouped about an oval pool. At each end of the cemetery is a small garden. On the hillside overlooking the cemetery is the chapel with its wealth of decorative mosaic and large sculptured figures. Between the chapel and the burial area, a bronze relief map recalls military operations in the region. On the retaining wall of the terrace, 294 names of the missing are inscribed. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.

Pleurodeles waltl DNA polymerase ?.Schematic representation of P. waltl Pol? mRNAs (A). The short variant (Pol? ? Ex 8) presents a 103 bp deletion corresponding to exon 8. This deletion removes one part of the active site of the protein. The BRCT (breast cancer suppressor protein carboxy-terminal) and the Pol X domain, which contains the active site, are required for Pol? function. Pol? variants were amplified using primers indicated by horizontal arrows (B). Quantification of the obtained PCR products using a Gel Doc 2000 and the Quantity One v.4.3.1 software (Bio-Rad, Hercules, CA, USA) indicates that the short isoform represents 16% and 6% of the Pol? transcripts in the spleen and testis of P. waltl, respectively. Ctl??=?negative control. MW?=?100 bp DNA ladder. A cladogram was then constructed by neighbor joining (C) supported with 1000 bootstrap replications using the MEGA4 software (www.megasoftware.net/) and the following sequences: Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT); Bos taurus (DAA14763), Homo sapiens (BAB72001), Mus musculus (NP_001036693), Gallus gallus (NP_990720), Ambystoma mexicanum (AA092254), Xenopus laevis (NP_001079251), Danio rerio (AAS89780). Polymerase beta; Mus musculus (NP_035260), Homo sapiens (NP_002681), Xenopus laevis (NP_001081643), Xenopus tropicalis (AAH74537), Xiphophorus maculatus (AAU11319). Polymerase lambda; Danio rerio (NP_998408), Xenopus tropicalis (NP_001093716), Mus musculus (NP_064416), Homo sapiens (NP_001167555). Polymerase mu; Homo sapiens (NP_037416), Mus musculus (NP_059097), Danio rerio (NP_956542), Xenopus tropicalis (NP_001164987), Pleurodeles waltl (HE583591). RIF tree of plant pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae.

The rooted neighbor-joining cladogram was constructed from 74 Enterobacteriaceae strains, including 24 characterized strains of Dickeya, Pectobacterium and Pantoea from the PBC (Supplemental Table S2), eight reference strains from GenBank (see Table 1 for strain names) and the outgroup Yersinia pestis. Identical sequences are represented only once and the number of sequenced strains is indicated on each leaf. Bootstrap values >50% (shown at the node) are expressed as a percentage of 5,000 replicates. The true Erwinia species E. tasmaniensis separates from the renamed Erwinia species that branch into three different genera: Dickeya (clade A), Pectobacterium (clades G and H) and Pantoea (clade M). Red text indicates uncharacterized strains of Dickeya and green text indicates uncharacterized strains of Pectobacterium. K numbers are shown for the accessions discussed in the text (Supplemental Table S2).

BEAST chronogram for the combined data and hypothesized biogeographic history of Sarraceniaceae.(A) Mean divergence times estimates are shown at the nodes of the cladogram. 95% posterior probability distribution shown with thick blue lines. Ancestral areas reconstructions from LAGRANGE [70], [71] shown in boxes near nodes. SA = South America; ENA = Eastern North America; WNA = Western North America; SAf = South Africa; and As = Asia. (B) We hypothesize that Sarraceniaceae originated in the Middle Eocene, perhaps in South America, and achieved its widespread distribution in North and South America by the Late Eocene. An early migration of Sarraceniaceae out of South America during the Eocene may have been facilitated via land connections in the proto-Caribbean. This connection would likely have been unavailable for direct overland migration by the mid-Oligocene, which is consistent with the early Oligocene disjunction of northern (Sarracenia, Darlingtonia) and southern (Heliamphora) members of Sarraceniacace. An East (Sarracenia+Heliamphora)/West (Darlingtonia) disjunction occurred in the very latest Oligocene, and may have been attributable to broad scale cooling and aridification during the late Oligocene.

One of the very very best. An elegant terrace, built 1885 with some nice detailing in the panels between floors and beneath the eaves. (see in All sizes) I am less keen on the door and windows which both rather over-egg the pudding, but I can't fault the cladding and indeed the choice of house. A very fine residence. The design features (it looks like the date is missing, c 1885-6 from the plaque) were used by George Sherrin in Westcombe Park Avenue in Blackheath from the same period.

Clad in lots and lots of Corten Steel. A great building material! Whilst visiting this building and taking internal and external photographs - I had a chance meeting with 2 people, Graham and Tomek who told me all about a film project they are working on which is getting screened in this building in October, documenting social change in Africa and their work with marginalised communities. I asked them to tell me about the project whist i filmed them and put a short video together here www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcVK0G0Xl1o

Split Croatia- Pine-clad hills, secluded coves, beaches- Split and the Dalmatian Riviera have been premier destinations on the Adriatic since the days of theRoman Emperors.

In fact, medieval Split was built within and around the palace built for the emperor Diocletian in his retirement.

The charms that entertained Emperors are still evident today. The Dalmatian Riviera offers the traveler a heady blend of natural beauty and fascinating cultural sites.

Diocletian abdicated in 305 A.D . During his reign , the emperor ruthlessly persecuted Christians. Ironically Split’s St. Dominius’ Cathedral occupies his mausoleum.

As far as we know, the original settlers here were Dalmatians tribes, later joined by Greek merchants, who saw the value of the harbor and its proximity to the rich interior. The first Romans stablished a colony nearby at Selona in 78 B.C, taking full advantage of the same features. Selona eventually became the Roman administrative center for Dalmatia, especially after Caesar settled other Italian colonist there. Roman roads and aqueducts were added to exploit the rich mines and farms along the sunny coast.

Diocletian Palace- The heart of old Split is built within and around the sprawling 8.4 acre(3.4 hectare) Palace erected by Diocletians.

St Simon & St Jude is one of Norwich's smallest medieval churches and one that has suffered more than most. It was officially declared redundant in the 1890s and after use as a sunday school for many years was abandoned in the 1930s (the west tower collapsed in 1911, only a fragment of it's east side remains). It was rescued from it's ivy-clad dereliction in the 1950s by being used as a Scouts headquarters who used it for several decades. Now unused yet again, it is remarkable that it survives at all.

It is a humble building by Norwich standards, a two chamber building of nave and chancel, dominated by it's large clear-glazed 14th centruy east window. Surrounded by trees and lacking it's tower, only this east wall makes it's presence felt from the street.

The interior is sadly the most brutally treated of all the redundant/converted churches in the city, the chancel arch has been walled up and a floor inserted through the middle of the nave converting it to a two storey space with the chancel as a kind of stairwell. My visit was late in the day and I only got to see inside the former chancel space and the lower half of the nave which was completely darkened and looked like a cellar (the light upper half accessed from the stair in the chancel was locked).

No old furnishings of any kind survive in the church except for the two fine Elizabethan Pettus monuments either side of the former chancel arch, but as a result of the darkened state inside I couldn't see either of them, despite being stood next to them!

Hopefully this church will find a new use soon that will allow for a much more sensitive treatement of the interior and remove the intrusive features that carved it up in the 1950s.

For more info and photographs of the interior details I was unable to see (plus old photos of the interior as it once was) see Simon Knott's entry on his excellent Norfolk Churches website below:-

Phylogeny of MHC I diversity in Atlantic cod.A) Unrooted polar cladogram of all unique cDNA sequences of MHC Ia and Ib in Atlantic cod, based on amino acid sequence alignment. Elongated branches illustrate sequences originating from at least two independent PCR reactions. B) Subset of sequences highlighted in a), rooted with additional teleost Ia and Ib sequences from Ensembl. Maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian posterior probabilities are shown for the basal branches. Scale bar represents number of amino acid substitutions pr site.

Established in 1862 when gold was discovered along Grasshopper Creek (previously named Willard's Creek by none other than the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1807), Bannack was also the capital of Montana Territory in 1864. As can be seen from these and other structures still standing, the town prospered, but only until the price of gold dropped in the late 1930s and failed to recover after the War. Many buildings continued to be occupied into the 1950s, and are sufficiently preserved (but definitely endangered!) today to enter safely for a good sense of what it was like to live there.

Isle of Man National Symbol

The National Symbol is the Three Legs of Man, first officially used in the early fourteenth century on the Manx Sword of State. The legs, clad in armour and bearing spurs, run in a clockwise direction and bear the Latin motto 'Quocunque Jeceris Stabit' or 'Whichever way you throw it, it will stand' - a testament to islanders' independence and resilience. The Three Legs also appear on the Manx Coat of Arms, flanked by a Peregrine Falcon and a Raven.

The source of the legs emblem is subject to many theories including the legend of the Island God Manannan, who is said to have set fire to the Legs in a fit of rage and hurled them down the hill in a burning wheel. The Legs are also related to Sicily's emblem of three naked legs surrounding the head of Medusa, and the swastika, both of which can be traced back to pagan symbols representing the Sun.
