Snow-clad El Capitan displays its incredible hulk on a wintery day.

This was a throw-away picture; the color balance was set wrong and it came out blue. Thanks to digital processing I was able to salvage it with a cheap imitation of the Ansel Adams black-and-white style.

As you can see, this was taken about the same time as one of my more popular postings, Spotlight on El Cap if you'd like to see it in color.

This can be found at 66 Broadway Road, Cardiff.

Reorganizing the kitchen means displaying our fearsome All-Clad collection on new IKEA wall racks. More to come...the All-Clad Seconds Sale is this weekend. Not shown: two huge stockpots.

UPDATED: Bought a larger pot and the holy grail of All-Clad purchases...the stainless roti roasting pan.

Relative abundance of major taxonomic groups in the Puget Sound samples and other selected metagenomes.Taxonomic groupings were based on BLASTX comparison to the NCBI taxonomy using MG-Rast [39] and ?50% identity and an alignment length ?50 amino acids. The ?other? category includes bacteria taxa present in <1% of sequences in all samples, eukaryotes and viruses. Shading is proportional to the relative abundance of each taxon within a metagenome. The cladogram was displayed using hierarchical clustering and the Euclidian distance metric. See Materials and Methods for references describing the additional metagenomes used for comparison. The open Sound locations cluster with other more saline environments including open and coastal ocean samples while the Marina and WWTP effluent samples cluster within a larger clade containing other freshwater and freshwater-impacted metagenomes.

Bridge Street, Richmond, Vermont USA • Lovely old cupola topped farmhouse, with most of its original detail now obscured under aluminum siding (but it doesn't need a paint job).

Yes it's the lamest HUMMER of all, the H3.

This one pulled up next tom me just as I was about to take a picture of something else.

All of that extra weight in the wood cladding must really help with MPG.

Travertine Clad Memorial in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI (1964). In 1953, the American Battle Monuments Commission received a grant to provide the cemetery with a fitting memorial. It includes an interdenominational chapel and inscriptions of over 20,000 names of MIA soldiers. The highlight is a collection of mosaics depicting some of the major battles in WWII and Korea. Construction was delayed due to problems with unstable soil.

A crisp, cold morning in Big White mountain resort, BC Canada. The dry air and low temperatures combined with the wind, makes the snow cling to the trees transforming them into a gravity-defying structure.

Quite quite fabulous. A rare gem. New door , 2 dishes loft conversion. 1930s effect lower bay, and a very busy cladding pattern. rare to find upper storey only cladding.

Todd (the Cowboy) and Steph (Shmee).

I took a lot of pictures over the weekend, and I realize that some people when confronted with a lot of photos just gloss over everything. Slide Show Syndrome, I suppose.

So anyway, if you gloss over them, you just might miss something. Like the following tale, the tale of how Todd & Steph got their nicknames.

Todd got his erroneously. Jul & I often quoted a line from the Simpsons, when Homer was pointing out the constellations, but for some reason we remembered it as "Todd the Cowboy". It actually wasn't until now that I realized the names Homer used were Jerry and Alan:

Pepe: Tell me more! I want to know all the constellations.

Homer: Well, there's... Jerry the Cowboy. And that big dipper looking thing is Alan... the Cowboy.

Pepe: Oh, Papa Homer, you are so learned.

Too late to change anything.

Steph, aka Shimmee Girl, we have taken to calling "Shmee", on account of the "one time" that Jul's tongue broke down and that's what came out. Steph can correct me if I'm wrong, but "Shimmee Girl" comes from here innate hula hoop skills. Stay tuned.

4% clock-constrained gene tree for the species of Aphonopelma found in Texas.

To assign dates to population-splitting events within the A. hentzi lineage and assess the importance of these historical events on cladogenesis across the whole tree, a fixed molecular clock at 4% was applied in BEAST to evaluate how this mygalomorph rate of evolution relates to the events of the Pleistocene. Population splits within the A. hentzi clade (northern vs. southern) are predicted to have originated around 237,000 ybp (294,900−183,200), represented by the light red box. The Pliocene/Pleistocene/Holocene time frame is displayed at top, years from present on the bottom, with The Last Glacial Maximum designated by the grey box. The bars correspond to 95% confidence intervals.

Evolutionary history of the acquisition of sacral vertebrae (above) and body size (below) in basal Sauropodomorpha.

Colored boxes and lines on the terminal taxa and branches represent the optimization of the type of sacrum among basal sauropodomorphs. Autapomorphic additions of sacral elements are marked with asterisks (see text for explanation). The curves plotted below the cladogram represent the range of estimated body size (y-axis) in sauropodomorph nodes leading to eusauropods (x-axis). Ancestral reconstructions of body mass are based on femoral lateromedial width (FML; see [69] and Appendix S1 for further data and methods). The terminal ‘Eusauropods’ represents forms more derived than the basal eusauropod Shunosaurus, some of which have further increased the sacral count [43], [60].

Seems like modern buildings are a bit flimsy nowadays. The apparent brickwork is actually cladding.

"A road in Loughborough is set to stay closed for weeks after “dangerous” loose cladding was reported on a building. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) taped off The Coneries at the Cradock Street junction, near the town centre, yesterday morning, Wednesday, January 24, after receiving several calls from members of the public.

Scaffolding was put up around the building so work can take place to make it safe. LFRS said it had contacted the landlord of the privately owned building and had spoken to him about “getting the cladding removed". Scaffolding has been put up around the building so work can take place to make it safe."
