The forty-five gentlemen who are clad in red in this painting form the Parliament of Mechelen, which was the highest court of law in the Netherlands at the time. They are gathered in the upper gallery of Mechelen’s Aldermen’s House, the seat of the Great Council of Mechelen until 1616. The session is presided by Charles the Bold, the Duke of Burgundy, who founded the Parliament at the end of 1473. Being a sovereign ruler, he wears a crown and a cloak that is lined with ermine.

This painting is attributed to the Mechelen painter Jan Coessaet and is dated 1587. These are only assumptions, however. The work was probably made long after the scene that it represents. The style is archaic and the painter clearly did not intend to paint a realistic representation of the figures. He has added their names and their titles (in French).

We do know that this painting hung in the anteroom of the Great Council in Hof van Savoye from the end of the 17th century onwards. Various versions exist of this painting, including in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels and in the French National Library.

On this alleyway near Kiyomizu Temple and at other key Kyoto sights, tourists dressed in rental kimonos are a very common sight.

I was too busy taking photos of other people to pose for photos of myself, and honestly I did not even count on kimono rentals being a thing. But now I know. Next time I am in Japan, I will rent one and take photos of myself here and there. (And do a similar hanbok rental for my next Korea trip.)

The doll was known as the Azone Doll Edit Kit Light (1/6 Slender Body Head 03, Gold Hair) and she was manufactured by a Japanese company called Azone. She originally came clad only in a pair of white panties and she had a blank face. She had rooted blonde hair but I kept it the way it was–with the exception of a minor trim in the back–because I felt long hair looked good on this doll. I painted her face using acrylic paints and I sealed the paint with a matte varnish. Her shoes were originally Skipper doll shoes that I painted red using acrylic paint then I added a layer of red sparkly acrylic paint. I sewed her dress from scratch using a Barbie clothes pattern and sparkly red fabric that I found in the remnant table at the local fabric shop. I used the same pattern to make her furry purse. I also used the Barbie clothes pattern to make her a coat. I used felt and fur trim to make the coat. The gold buttons on the front were strictly decorative–her coat actually had snaps to keep it shut.

A real monster of a stone clad house. Built 1881. Where does one start? The nearest to this I found was on a similar house in Letytonstone.

The Big Fish also called the Bigfish is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness. 10 metres long and constructed in 1999 it is located at Donegall Quay in Belfast, near the Lagan Lookout and Custom House. There are also a number of seals nearby but I do not know is they are part of the original art installation.

The outer skin of the fish is a cladding of ceramic tiles decorated with texts and images relating to the history of Belfast. Material from Tudor times to present day newspaper headlines are included along with contributions from Belfast school children. The Big Fish also contains a time capsule storing information/images/poetry relating to the City.

Bangkok's most unmissable attraction is of course the Grand Palace, and most specifically the temple complex of Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), famed for it's riot of coloured and gilded ornament, paintings and sculptures; quite simply, so visually stunning there is nothing quite like it anywhere else!

The Palace and Temple complex were begun in 1782, the year the capital was moved to Bangkok, and parts of the palace buildings betray 18th century European influence combined with traditional Thai style, such as the breathtaking gilt spires on the roof. Most of the interiors of the Palace itself are off limits to visitors since, although no longer the main residence of the Thai monarchy, it is frequently used for state functions and ceremonies.

The Wat Phra Kaew complex however is the greatest draw, famed for it's stunning architecture and the famous 'Yaksha' guardian figures that flank all the main entrances to the complex. These towering figures, with their rich colours and tapering crowns, represent demonic characters from the mythological epic the 'Ramakien', and are identifiable as distinct individuals, all here serving a benign, protective role.

The Ramakien is also the subject for a stunning sequence of wall paintings within the cloister that encirlces the entire site, illustrating in minute detail the battles of the heroic monkey warriors, led by the monkey god Hanuman, against the demonic armies and kingdoms of Tosakan.

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha itself forms the largest structure and contains the venerated (though small) Buddha image. The complex contains several other iconic buildings clad in sumptuous decor, most notably the library or 'mondop' with it's gilt spire along with the great golden stupa.

The temple complex is technically a royal chapel rather than a working monastery like most Thai temples as it has no resident monks (the sheer volume of visitors leaves little room for anyone else anyway!).

We had visited previously in 2010, but on that occasion were unable to enter the Emerald Buddha Temple itself, and certain other elements were under restoration, so this time we were able to focus more on those parts of the complex we were seeing for the first time.

The green bottle motif is not uncommon, though rare in Hackney. Other adornments include a cowrie shell and a Tottenham Hotspur cockerel. Fine to very fine.

Perhaps immediately pre-WW1. Ideal for aluminium double glazing, a simple off white and grey palette has been chosen.

A blueberry bush in October. 2015. Maryland, USA.

This is a very rare occurrence, three clad houses in a row and all in different colours. Possibly the same signature is on all three treatments, but the gradation of colours from warm to neutral to cool is inspiring. A jarring note is sounded by the different treatment of the upper window arches, from non-existent (warm) to fine (middle house) to enlarged with an archless modern concrection on the right hand house. The screen block wall is , of course, a favourite of mine. This one looks very pretty.
