The front of this little hot dog shoppe had a few interesting signs posted. Included was one advertising Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs 466 miles away.
Chili is feeling much better after yesterday's procedure and is starting to get used to her new home. She is very energetic and playful, but also very eager to please. She knows "sit" and "no" and "be a good girl" and gives you her paw when she wants you to take her outside. She got five walks today, so I ended up with over 15K steps.
We feel pretty certain that she's a chow-chow husky mix. Her shape and gait are very much like a husky, and she seems to need to run. A lot.
Skyline coney dogs - hot dog, greek style chili (main flavor: cinnamon), dab of yellow mustard, shredded cheddar cheese (onions optional). It's a comfort food here in Cincinnati. Which is an oxymoron considering the discomfort my tummy goes through after eating a couple of these....

Happy 4th everyone!
Multiple Exposure done in-camera (3 shots)....I hadn't been there in years and stopped the other night just as they were going to close......They are addicting and so bad for you :-). On Central just West of 12th. St.
Accidentally deleted this while cleaning out my cooking-related photos. Not my cooking, for once; this is The Sycamore's awesome short-rib chili dog Friday special, and the fork is a must. The pickled onions are a nice touch. The only way this could be improved would be to add a couple thick half-slices of fresh tomato.
PS, upon re-posting: You guys could try to be more consistent about the ingredients of this dish. It's great like this. Don't leave anything out.

chili dog and chili half-smoke (bill cosby's favorite, apparently) at ben's chili bowl, washington d.c. the dog and the sausage were fantastic, but the drink (fruit punch) was undrinkably sweet.

There aren’t too many days of the year that you can get away with eating things like the Walking Taco. Super Bowl Sunday and the final game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament are definitely two of them. Better take advantage of them when you can…

A Traditional from The Slaw Dogs is just what it says. A good straightforward chili dog. A 1/4 pound Vienna beef dog, beer chili, cheddar cheese, mustard, and chopped onions. Real good. Very filling, with a decent chili. But what was absolutely fantastic were those fries up there in the corner. Cooked perfectly, they were crunchy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. I might just go back for these alone sometime. Under $8 for dog and fries.

[excerpted from Ben's Chili Bowl homepage]
On Aug. 22, 1958, Ben’s Chili Bowl was born. It was an exciting time on the U Street corridor, which was then known as "Black Broadway." Top performers could be found playing sets in clubs along the corridor, as well as eating and just "hanging out" at Ben’s. It was not uncommon to see such luminaries as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole, Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory, Martin Luther King Jr., Donny Hathaway, Roy Ayers or Bill Cosby at "The Bowl."
In 1968, the assassination of Dr. King lit a fuse of rage. Riots ensued. Most of the city closed down; Ben’s remained open. Stokely Carmichael of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which was located across the street, obtained special police permission to allow Ben’s to stay open after curfew to provide food and shelter for activists, firefighters and public servants desperately trying to restore order. After the riots, the area was in shambles. Businesses shut down. But there was some glimmer of hope in the neighborhood as the concept of "Black is Beautiful" emerged. Ben’s continued to serve an eclectic crowd of Regulars.
In the 1970's, black films gained in popularity, and the Lincoln Theatre next door was often packed. Still, the effects of the riots continued to take their toll. By the mid 1970's, drug dealers began peddling heroin in open-air drug markets. The once vibrant street looked and felt whipped. Even so, the flame of hope could not be extinguished. Mayor Marion Barry, Jr. had the vision to build the Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center at 14th and U Streets. For the first time in years, hundreds of new jobs were created on U Street. In September of 1985, Bill Cosby --who in fact courted his wife Camille here in the early 60’s--held a national press conference at Ben’s Chili Bowl to celebrate his number one rated The Cosby Show, thrusting Ben’s into the national limelight. Business improved and things were looking up, but there were more problems ahead. In 1987, construction began on Metro's Green Line. This section of U Street became nothing more than a 60-foot hole. Business came to a halt overnight. Ben’s made the decision to stay open with only two employees serving Metro workers and faithful regulars each day. Through more than five years of construction and upheaval, Ben’s managed to survive.
After a 50 plus year journey, business is now booming and the Ben’s brand is red hot.
As U Street once again redefines itself, Ben’s will continue its role as the anchor of the neighborhood. The one constant thing Ben’s has had since 1958 has been the most loyal of customers, and we listened when you said, "whatever you do, never change this place." After 51 years, Ben’s is the same place it always has been. The counter, booths and stools are all original; the fresh homemade chili is still made with love, using the same secret recipe. Since President Obama came, the line may have gotten longer but the look and feel of Ben’s will never change. To our customers and especially our regulars, we appreciate you and thank you for supporting Ben's. To those reading this that have yet to come to Ben's, we look forward to seeing you very soon.
I Grilled up a few Hebrew National Hotdogs and made this homemade chili sauce. Heres the recipe I used
1 medium onion-chopped
1 pound ground beef
16 ounces tomato paste
1 tablespoon vinegar
1/4 cup sweet relish
1 dash caynne pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
Brown together the onion and ground beef. Bring Beef mixture, paste, vinegar, sweet relish and salt to a boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. Add Yellow Mustard, chili powder, pepper and caynne pepper. Add a little water if its too thick
Tonight's processed food selection from the vending machine at work. Two cholesterol logs topped with something that looks like chili...YUCK!
If you're ever in Athens or Atlanta, seek out The Varsity and try the onion rings. You'll thank me. And I don't even like onion rings.
Some days, after wrangling a two-year-old and a six-month old at the same time, we resort to "comfort food"... may our bodies forgive us.
I wanted a chili dog after this shoot. I never got one. I still want one.
Hadn't seen Lilith in a very long time (to the point I was a little worried that I'd done something wrong and they'd unfriended me, but I guess they just had to change FB accounts), so it was nice doing a shoot with them again.
