This picture is a bit difficult for me to look at. I was playing with these kids where they live today, next to a huge garbage dump. Most of their parents work as garbage sorters in the said dump. And this is where they're growing up, amidst flies next to huge piles of garbage, knowing full well that poverty is the state that they're going to live with for probably all their days. It's the first time that as I was playing with the kids, they kept asking me for money and when I sat down that tapped at my pocket to see if I had anything in my wallet. I gave them all the candy we had.
Why are these kids worrying about getting money at such a young age? They're not like the beggar kids that we see on the street that are often kidnapped and forced into lives of begging under a boss. They have families and a place to live, even though it's next to a huge dump. Where has their childhood gone?
The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald TD today launched the Irish Childhood Bereavement Network which has been set up to support those working with grieving children and young people. Based on a UK model, the Irish Childhood Bereavement Network will act as a hub for those working with bereaved children, young people and their families in Ireland. The aim of the network is to facilitate easy access to a choice of high quality local and national information, guidance and support to enable children to manage the impact of death and the loss in their lives. The Irish Hospice Foundation has agreed to host the Network for the first two years and will seek to source funding for its ongoing development.
Some of my contacts have been posting childhood photos - thought I'd post this one of myself at about age 5. Unretouched - needs to be cleaned up a bit, as it is an old photo - How I loved that beret!
This was originally an image for my uni summer work until i've recently changed my idea. The theme was your own back yard so I followed it as old memories i could just about remember.
The image was took at Shobrooke park where i used to go when i was young to feed the ducks and of course i had to include my good old blanky i used to snuggle up to when i was little.

She requested a manta ray and an octopus. She said these additions would make it more like the aquarium she visited with her grandpa and aunt. I did an octopus, but the picture didn't turn out.
The construction is just this box with the shapes cut out placed upside down on top of the existing entryway, then a hole cut in that entryway's roof. Yes, I take my cardboard construction far too seriously.
