Just before 11:00 a.m On Monday, April 25, 2022, Hazzard Range county Sheriff’s office Deputies responded to a call involving a male subject who tried to break into vehicles at Gateway Plaza, a shopping center in Sparta . Sergeant Parker Walles was first Deputy on scene and observed the subject breaking into a Blue Chevrolet HHR . Sgt Walles activated his emergency equipment as he tried to get the Subject to pull over . .
After a short chase and with assistants of Deputies Clint Dallas and Shawn Ridge the subject was boxed in and taken into custody . The male subject was booked into the Hazzard Range county Detention Center on the outstanding warrants along with new charges of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle, attempted breaking and entering

Boom is dealing with illegal dumping problem . Police Chief Glen Roberts told the Journal that his dept along with county sheriff's office has seen up in last few months of people dumping trash in the basin and that they do there best to enforce the no dumping laws ,but with small man power it is tough .He noted that besides reminding people it is illegal to dump ,if you see or know of someone doing it please contact local law enforcement.

We see Mt Plumbing , heating and cooling Worker Jesse Sparks loading up some parts the company ordered from Hairrson's Hardware Sparta branch. Only county races contested are County Sheriff . Current sheriff Troy Forbes has Alan Cay running against him in the Republican primary in June . County Magistrate Judge Sally Harts is also contested ,in fall though . By current County Municipal Judge Chris Lock .

On Tuesday March 9th ,2021 , an 18 wheeler was blown over from strong winds and took out a fence on I 25 near Range , Clay County sheriff’s office and New Mexico State Police closed the freeway so some cattle who had wandered onto the interstate median could be moved back to range land.

OASIS SPRINGS -SWEETWATER TRIBUNE
On Tuesday January 20th ,2026 at approximately 11:18 am ,Oasis Springs Police Dept and Sweetwater County Fire and Rescue Station 4 ( Oasis Springs ) was dispatched to a structure fire at home on 2nd St between 3rd and 4th Aves
Sweetwater County Fire and Rescue Chief Raymond Nighville told the Tribune that two vacated homes were fully destroyed and third occupied home was damaged ,fire is under investigation ,but noted along with Oasis Springs Interim Police Chief Jess Sanchez there has already been a number of arson fires in the county in the last year.

As temperature rises pass 101 ° F ,so does people's temper like here . We see Muddy Spring Police Chief Amy Melendez taking a domestic disturbance call. The Chief finds that a couple having a loud conversation about when to turn the AC on and Neighbor heard yelling so called it in. Lucky the couple already had calm down by the time Chief Melendez arrived .
Muddy Spring Population of about 900 ,it is also located 14 miles north of the county line and is about 12 miles south of Apache the county seat of Apache county .It has 6 officers positions that includes the chief ,but with officer on paid administration( see Story 11 album for more on that ) and vacate position,that 12 hour shift is being done solely by Chief Amy Melendez.

Wasso Farms is named for Wasso family who settled in lower Swift Creek Canyon in late 1890s only about a mile from location Swift Creek joins the Rio Grande and is part of the Rainbow Valley, an agricultural valley located in the central part of the county and is about a 25-mile-long valley on the banks of the Rio Grande . Sparta, the county seat, sits in the northern part of the valley, and it is called Rainbow Valley because of all of the different colors of rocks. Irrigated mostly by the water of Eagle Lake built in 1914-16 , which is located just north of Sparta, and groundwater from wells. The valley grows many things, but mostly alfalfa ,Chile, onions, corn, pumpkins, pinto beans, pecans, and cotton. It is also home to three little census-designated communities of Sun, Mars, and Rio Grande Junction. Water for this area is diverted at the Pump House Diversion Dam, built in 1914.
From 1920s to 1970s Wasso's grew only cotton ,onions and alfalfa, now they are one of the bigger pecan growers in the county ,but also owning farm land in neighboring Apache County . Today’s incident Manuel. Wasso fell asleep while smoking on the porch of his house built in the 1920s by his father . Resulting in his burning hand and a small fire on the porch his son Manny was worried about something like this happening for some time .

On Friday Sept 4th 2026 ,Hazzard Range County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 407 Main St in Sparta the Citizens Savings and Loan Sparta Branch to report of a disturbance, assault and vandalism .
Undersheriff Cathy Trejo told the Bulletin a peaceful demonstration was happening outside Citizens Savings and Loan over their rumor involved with an AI data center company. When a male in 40s assaulted a few of the demonstrators and broke a window on the bank and a parked vehicle . Three demonstrators tackled the subject and restrained him till deputies arrived on scene. He was arrested along with another 18 year old woman who assaulted a deputy .
Undersheriff Trejo commended the demonstrators for showing restraint and noted two bank employees were treated on scene from broken glass.
Branch manager Jason Foch would not give comment on advice from the main office .

With temperatures resting in the low 70s this Friday morning, members of the Apache County Sheriff’s Office , Apache Police Department, and Apache County Fire and Rescue, joined by City of Apache Fire and Rescue and Apache Regional Medical Center EMS, gathered at the County Event Center. The local agencies convened for a 25th anniversary service dedicated to the remembrance of 9/11/01.
9/11/2001 terrorist attacks the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City, NY. The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C, and United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville PA, after the crew and passengers fought the hijackers. Killing 2,977 people ( not counting the terrorists ) and injuring 6,000 +, Thousands of people have developed illnesses and many died years later as a result of the toxic dust from the buildings that collapsed from the attacks and aftermath clean up .

The day has finally arrived , election day 2022 ( Nov 8th ) ,We see Hazzard Range County Sheriff’s office Sergeant Butch Soto headed back to unit after casting his ballot at Fort Hazzard Community center in southern part of the county. The center is one of 9 places to vote in the county .
The Community center is in the old Fort Hazzard High school built in 1934 and used to 1965 school year when, Hazzard Range county schools system was formed and all students were bused to Sparta, the county seat . Unlike the elementary that was used from 1920 and used till 1939 when the High school was used for all grades . Elementary school building was torn down in 2017 . The old High school was turned into the community center in 1967 and has been used for that ever since .

He noted in this joint investigation with state police ,DA office and federal law enforcement result in 4 people being arrested in Hazzard Range county and another 14 in neighboring Clay and Apache counties . Lastly he note that this is biggest bust in county ever .The suspects will be arraign in court on Wednesday.

First Responders are responding to reports of a County sheriff’s vehicle in an accident with a commercial vehicle on NM 168 near Underpass Rd at Mountain View Shopping Center. Please use caution in the area

On Thursday July 2nd 2026 County first responders were dispatched to Mountain View Shopping Center in Oasis Springs to a commercial vehicle vs car accident. New Mexico State Police Sergeant Dean Penney told the Tribune that the accident remains under investigation ,but noted Sweetwater County Sheriff TJ Gonzales was attempting a traffic stop ,when a black Freightliner T-bone his patrol truck . Sheriff Gonzales was transported to Sweetwater Peak Hospital with mirror injuries .

Clay county Sheriff Shawn Gray and NMDOT is advising that if you don’t need to be out traveling on the roadways please don’t. Roads are icy in spots. Snow and blowing snow are reducing visibility .If you have to travel Please drive with caution, reduce speed and obey all posted traffic signs. NMDOT crews are out plowing the roadways .
