THE HAZZARD RANGE BULLETIN
In the press release from Hazzard Range County Sheriff’s Office, Executive Assistant Public Information Officer Shelby Burk, on behalf of Undersheriff Ron Bayerd.
On Sunday, Nov 30th, 2025, at approximately 3:45 PM, Hazzard Range County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Lance Mead attempted a traffic stop on a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria near NM 168 and Neon Moon Road. The driver did not stop and fled north on NM 168 toward the townsite of Sparta. As the Pursuit entered Sparta, a passenger in the vehicle fired shots, hitting a pickup parked in front of Sparta Auto Parts. Deputies terminated their pursuit, but shortly thereafter resumed it as the driver drove east on the sidewalk of Main St.
Deputies pursued the vehicle onto the Old Mexico Ave Bridge. Shots were fired from the car, and more shots were fired as the vehicle smashed through the fence of the old magsum mine on Lobo Mt Rd. Seconds later, the driver lost control and rolled twice.
Three male suspects were located in the vehicle. One 25-year-old and one 18-year-old were declared deceased on scene. One juvenile was critically injured, and another juvenile was arrested a short distance away.
Burk noted this is an active investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and State Police, but the vehicle in question was stolen locally. The four suspects were not county residents. Questions were directed to the NM 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office, District Attorney Patrick Flrod, who declined to comment.
