Norbiz made me do this, I swear! And I usually don't look like this big a doob, just when I'm holding Lovesexy.

our delicious Cheese Ball is made with a special blend of cheeses, sprinkled with ground, selected nuts and topped with a red cherry

We were at the supermarket and Everett found this huge jar of Cheese Balls. He just picked it up and wordlessly followed us around the store carrying it until we gave in and put it in the cart.

Man, I am such a cheeseball. Well traffic was awful on the way home from work (holiday traffic, I presume), so I took the back way and stopped at one of my favorite vices - the little soft serve stand on the side of Route 40. I'm easily contented.

365 Days: Day 161

Oh, how I love soft serve.

Thursday Edition: Valerie Roybal

Rainy Thursday greetings from NYC, my collector friends! I'm glad to be back home and have been enjoying some quality time with the best mutt in the universe, Ollie Otter. I've got lots to catch up on and look forward to, so today's introduction will be brief and constructed from recycled ingredients. It's an approach befitting the work of southwestern artist Valerie Roybal, who is herself a scavenger of bits and pieces with a brilliant talent for assembling them just so.

Secret Language 3 and Well-being 2 have much in common with our first edition from Valerie, Secret Language 1. When introducing that edition, here's what I had to say:

Valerie's choice of materials for the Secret Language series speaks to my bookish tendencies, my penchant for wandering through thrift stores and flea markets, and my predilection for proper penmanship. (Alliteration alert!) Aside from the obvious visual allure of her layered constructions, their texture and presence ignite other senses and memories that I fondly associate with all these activities. The snippets of fine calligraphy remind me of lazy comfort of curling up with a well-worn copy of Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice. Her color palette wanders across the entire range of shades I find so appealing in the vintage items that always catch my eye, whether they're water-stained snapshots or fire-red Pyrex bowls, happily transporting me to the cluttered chaos of an upstate Salvation Army, with creaky floorboards, dusty air and undiscovered treasures.

Such nice memories to spend time with! Not to sound like a cheeseball, but that's one of the things I most enjoy about living with art. Everything that I have on my walls is the seed for some sort of story or memory, giving me ample opportunity to indulge in some escapism. My here and now is pretty great, but it's nice to be able to go elsewhere once in a while.

It's also pretty great to come home again, and I'm going to be sure to make the most of it since I won't be here for long. As mentioned previously, April is a busy month! One of the month's highlights is sure to be the San Francisco 20x200 Collectors Confab, hosted by the fine folks at Chronicle Books. I'll be back next week with more details on that event, and more great art. See you then.

Gnocchi gnudi means nude gnocchi. It uses little flour and just cheeses and spinach.

New goodies!!! Well...sort of. We have a lot of these albums already in other formats, but we thought it would be fun to have them in vinyl - you know, the way they were meant to be heard. Andrew and I went to this little independent music store in Waynesboro to trade in a bunch of duplicate CDs (yeah, you know it's serious when you combine your music collection!) and we got a bunch of store credit...which we used immediately. =)

365 Days: Day 177

I'll give you a cookie if you can identify all six albums.

The Straite Family strives to be as American as we can be. Roadside America is not a passing fancy, its not something one does if they are board. Roadside America is a requirement to be American. Mark Twain once said "You have to see the Thing, the biggest ball of yarn, and as many roadside attractions as possible in order or be American" If one does not take every possible opprtunity to hit any, and every, cheeseball roadside haunt they pass, they are virtually a communist.

Theme of the Week: Bucket List

I'm going to be able to cross this one of the list in March!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here's my fundraising pitch!

Hi Everyone!

Next March, I’m going to Bangalore India on a Women Build/Habitat for

Humanity volunteer trip. Along with 100 other volunteers from around

the globe, I’ll be working with Indian families to help build safe and

affordable homes. The project kicks off on March 8th, which is

International Women’s Day. We will be building in partnership with

rural and underprivileged Indian women who have formed microfinance

self-help groups so that they can save money to build better lives for

their families.

Most of you know that Women Build is a cause near and dear to my

heart. Over the past five years, I’ve been volunteering at Portland

Women Build alongside some truly amazing women. We have built four

homes and most importantly, have helped four families reach their goal

of owning a safe, affordable home. I’ll be traveling to India with

two other awesome Portland Women Build volunteers – Mel George and

Katie Hughes. And of course, I’ll be bringing my camera and I’m

really looking forward to documenting our journey and experiences.

Sounds fabulous, right? Here’s how you can help!

1) Donate online through my Habitat for Humanity Global Village webpage:

Heather's Women Build Trip Fund

I need to raise $1,950 for the trip fee, which covers my trip fees

like food and lodging, but also includes a donation toward the

IndiaBUILDS program. These donations will be paired will be paired

with the savings of women’s self-help groups to help some of India’s

poorest families gain better lives. And your donations are tax

deductible!

2) Donate toward my airfare fund at my paypal site

Airfare will be around $1,700 – I’m still on the lookout for a great

deal, but that’s a realistic figure.

At the risk of sounding like a bad infomercial, if you donate $50 or

more, I will send you an 8x10 print of your choice! Here’s a link to

some examples: prints for india

Please consider giving if you can. And if you can’t, all your good

thoughts, positive energy and fund-raising tips are also greatly

appreciated! (Or India travel tips!)

Take care,

Heather

Has it really been 100 days since I started Project 365? I'm getting better at taking my camera everywhere, but the best thing is that I look with that eye -- the engaged, visually observant one -- a much higher percentage of the time, whether or not I have my camera with me. And I like that a lot.

Party snacks, hand crafted by me. I have no idea how I managed to make one twice the size of the other.
