Getting an inch of snow is like winning 10 cents in the lottery

I’m no expert, but I’ve always felt that, despite the common element in rivers, seas and oceans, riverside evenings possess a distinct magic compared to those over oceans or seas.

For instance, when a sunset is framed over a riverside, it often stirs a localized sentiments bound to specific places and lingering memories. Conversely, oceanic horizons tend to evoke a pure, existential solitude, reflecting the internal landscape of the viewer rather than the physical world around them.

Perhaps it is a flawed theory, but it is an observation distilled from witnessing how deeply these views move people across all walks of life.

One winter afternoon at a lake

While visiting South Korea, in terms of photography I didn’t travel as much as I originally anticipated. But I had been eyeing on this park, the lake in particular, even before getting there. So, when I had this afternoon all to myself, I grabbed my gear and went for a long walk.

The park was not crowded at all but, to my surprise, a stream of people either taking a walk, jogging, walking dogs, or pushing baby strollers around the park never stopped.

Thankfully though there was not a single soul by the lake, so while I was there, all I had to worry about was the wind that picked up every five minutes.

Other than that it was such a lovely late afternoon that I enjoyed my solitude behind my camera. And this makes the first photo of the year taken and produced in 2020.

So last night, I had decided to finally sink the "365 Boat." I started the project in 2009 to 'keep myself afloat during my time of unemployment' and to improve my photography. I achieved both goals but lately, I have found myself uninspired and floundering. I took photos only two days for the month of September ... and realized it was time to send the boat to Davy Jones' Locker. I related this plan to the girls this morning and they were very upset with me for giving it up; and needless to say, they talked me into not giving up. It is interesting to see how our roles have reversed. So tomorrow will be the dawn of a new day.

This image was taken on a sunset sail in Key West. The title is from a favorite Flogging Molly song. I thought of this song a lot during my hiatus from the working world: Flogging Molly — Float

Last Sunday there was this most amazing sunrise. The sky was on fire and of course, I can't quickly get to a good location on the spur of the moment. Living in a valley has a few disadvantages: no place to watch the sun rise or set, the coldest temperatures in all of Chicagoland and of course we are smack dab in the middle of a flood plain!

I raced to a nearby park anyway and managed to catch some beautiful sunrise after it crested the treeline. I had another idea for today that didn't pan out so in its place, I bring you this tasty sunrise with a layers of vanilla cake, frosted with chocolate and orange.

Happy Cliche Saturday!!

Great Western Road Trip 2010 • Day 12

25 Days • 13 States • 6,930 Miles • 6,820 Photos

I have to tell you, this is one of my favorite photos of the trip; and I didn't even take this one. Jackie took this one of me, standing next to Balanced Rock in Arches National Park. I really like how she framed it!

Jackie has a flair for flare! We have several flare photos she took and I'll be posting those later. I immediately made this my desktop on my MacBook!

As you can see, I made it to the beach. I know I've already posted a fence shot for today so this will be Part 2; and it is special because for the first time in a long time; I actually took it today!! I really want to kick off my 365 in October the right way.

I was bummed that I missed the sunrise on the lake. It seems that today is Recruit Graduation Day at Great Lakes and I didn't figure that into my timeline. I was, however, blinded by the hugest ball of fire as i was driving straight into the sunrise. *heavy sigh*

Since I had Rachel (my recovering patient) waiting 'patiently' in the car I jogged down to the beach and grabbed a few shots. This was taken at "Sunrise Park" and there were benches ringing the bluff overlooking the park and the lake. The homes were just gorgeous and I can only imagine how much it would cost to live in Lake Bluff! I will definitely be returning here for that sunrise I missed!

I met a very kind gentleman on the boardwalk and inquired about the best breakfast cafe in town. He directed me to Bluffington's. Rachel and I had a wonderful breakfast together. I told him any recommendation would work since everything on the planet is pretty much better than galley food!

Again, Happy Fence Friday and First Day of October!

It is quite obvious that I slid all sliders to the max for this image. It started out as an HDR but I didn't like what it did to the image so I dialed down the HDR effect and completely flipped the colors. I was going for a dreamy, surreal look.

The title is from a favorite song from my youth ... I realize that this really dates me :-) I chose this title because, to my delight, when I first loaded up this image, I discovered that the sailboat on the right in the foreground carries the name "Dreamboat Annie!" That just tickled me to no end! I love surprises like that!

♫ ♥ Heart – Dreamboat Annie ♥ ♫

Heading out this morning into the sun

Riding on the diamond waves, little darlin' one

Warm wind caress her

Her lover it seems

Oh, Annie

Dreamboat Annie my little ship of dreams

Going down the city sidewalk alone in the crowd

No one knows the lonely one whose head's in the clouds

Sad faces painted over with those magazine smiles

Heading out to somewhere won't be back for a while

Very busy with preparations for a graduation party / family reunion tomorrow. Tossing together a pasta chicken salad and a huge bucket of sand pudding (served in a sand bucket with a shovel)! So, I pulled this from my archives; it seemed appropriate for today.

Happy Fence Friday Everyone and Have a Great Weekend! :D

Sunset stroll

I looked up at the sky about ten minutes past five and thought that a fair amount of clouds was still lingering. I wasn’t sure if they would remain for another half hour and help create a beautiful sunset. I knew I didn’t have enough time to drive and reach the beach in time. So, instead I decided to try it at the park.

There were not a lot but some people who came out for an evening walk, and it was inevitable to see at least one of them in my composition. For that reason, I took at least an extra shot at the same exposure thinking that I was going to Photoshop them out by blending them.

But then, when I actually got to this shot, I completely changed my mind.

I couldn’t resist leaving him in as he was walking down the path while keeping a foot of distance from the borders. He became the man in my sunset stroll.

A favorite spot of mine in downtown San Jose, where the palm trees sit between the two towers of the high rise buildings. A great spot for catching airplanes landing at the nearby airport as well as some pretty colorful sunsets.

Desecho Valley is immense. As the sun sets, the shadow of the mountains travels rapidly up the valley floor. For a short time, the horses followed the light, moving further and further away from our camp. More distant cows, goats and horses appeared as tiny specs moving here and there over the slopes, and sometimes disappearing into the background. This valley is a tricky space that stretches so far into the distance, it's difficult to know how far away, or how big anything actually is.

Just a little bit of sliding rendered a taupe colored pond into a beautiful blue pond! The sunrise just out of frame 'exploded' across the pond so brilliantly (that part really happened)!! And the worm laid out on the ground (safely out of goose range) to get this shot through the dried out weeds (it was also about 20°)!!

I am so sorry I haven't been by to comment the last couple of days ... I did get a few in before my router failed yesterday. Ran out and bought a new one ... and now the connection is as slow as molasses, keeps timing out ... dropping the connection, etc. I post a comment and it just sits there spinning endlessly ... So if any of my comments look weird or are repeated, that is why! If I can't troubleshoot this today; I am going to return the router and get a different brand. Computers are awesome ... when they are working! Been trying to post this since early morning ...

Happy Slider and Happy Worms-eye View Sunday!! :D

Converted an image of passing storm clouds to B&W. I thought that B&W would make the storm clouds more omnious.

Used one of the storm cloud images and the BW_Sampler9 image from the bonus files.

Morning light at Serón

[This is a series of photos that I took while backpacking Torres del Paine. I tried to take as many photos as possible, but it rained so much more than I had ever anticipated, so it was not possible. It was extremely windy, so a combination of both rain and wind made it difficult to shoot while actually hiking.]

The morning of Day 2 began with light sprinkles. But it eventually stopped at the almost reverent morning light that I have ever seen. What was slowly seeped through the cracks in the blanket of clouds that hovered over us eventually flooded across the snow capped mountains that dominated the north skyline of Serón.

Completely awestruck, I just stood there, not being able to take my eyes off of it.

For it being one of my first times shooting this late. I was able to get some pretty good photos. The experience was also very nice.

Not enough for a series, but feeling inspired by the formlessness of water and reflections.
