NGC 4755 Chile Two telescope of the Slooh network and processing with pixinsight. NGC 4755 (also known as the Casket of Joys or C 94) is a famous open cluster located within the limits of the small but very bright constellation of the Southern Cross; It is also visible to the naked eye and is one of the best-known open clusters in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is easily spotted, less than one degree southeast of Mimosa, the star β the Cross, just north of the dark Coalsack nebula. It is also visible to the naked eye and with the help of 8x40 or 10x50 binoculars you can already see its most evident feature, namely the strong contrast between the red color of one of its main stars (which would be extraneous to the cluster, and would appear superimposed only for an optical effect), and the dominant one of the cluster, which is instead composed of white and blue stars; precisely this contrast of colors, which suggests a set of multicolored jewels, is at the origin of the proper name of NGC 4755, Scrigno di Gioie. A small refractor telescope is already enough to completely resolve it into stars.

Its declination is strongly austral and means that this cluster is not observable from many of the inhabited regions of the northern hemisphere, such as Europe and almost all of North America; from some inhabited regions of the southern hemisphere, on the contrary, it is circumpolar, as from the large cities of Sydney and Melbourne in Australia and from Cape Town in South Africa. The best time for its observation in the evening sky is between February and August.

Boulevard de Charonne 13/02/2023 08h58

Boulevard de Charonne with the corner of the Rue des Grand Champs at the right with as well the narrow Rue des Ormneaux. I love this part of the 20ème arrondissement.

Boulevard de Charonne

Boulevard de Charonne is an avenue in the 11ème and 20ème arrondissement with a length of 1344 meters and width of 40 meters. In the quartiers Charonne and Père Lachaise. This boulevard starts at avenue du Trône and Cours du Vincennes and ends at Rue de Mont-Louis and rue Pierre-Bayle.

Its name comes from the fact that it borders the former town of Charonne.

Female version of the greek god Hades

Greek God of the Dead and King of the Underworld

Hades was the god of the underworld and the name eventually came to also describe the home of the dead as well. He was the oldest male child of CRONUS and Rhea.

Hades and his brothers ZEUS and POSEIDON defeated their father and the TITANS to end their reign, claiming rulership over the cosmos. They agreed to split their rule with Zeus becoming god of the skies, Poseidon god of the sea and Hades god of the underworld.

The young man asked, "Sir, this boat. Is the next stop Willoughby?" Charon smiled, held out his hand for the fare, and simply said, "This boat goes on to Thanatos. It's very similar to Willoughby". The young man boarded. He seemed resigned.

Charon roadster (based on a 1982 Citroen donor vehicle) from the Netherlands seen in Cambridge.

There Chairon stands, who rules the dreary coast -

A sordid god: down from his hairy chin

A length of beard descends, uncombed, unclean;

His eyes, like hollow furnaces on fire;

A girdle, foul with grease, binds his obscene attire

Virgil

Magnificent calyx-krater decorated with a figure representing the main iconographic model of the Etruscan daemon of death, Charun. The name of Charu or Charun, as he is known since the 4th century BC, is related to the Greek daemon Charon, the boatman who for few coins, "obólos", carried the dead across the river Acheron or the Styx lagoon.

His hooked nose is exceptionally sharp; the eyes are deeply sunken; the eyebrows thick and bushy; the beard is curly and thick; the black hair decorated with a wreath falls in strands on the neck. Sunken wide-open eyes complete his grotesque face. The daemon walks holding a heavy hammer leant on his right shoulder and a wreath in his left lowered hand. The hammer used to ravage people is the main iconographic attribute of Charun.

This daemon of the boundary region setting the transition between this world and the Hereafter, could be interpreted as the symbol of death terror and of the implacability of human destiny.

This krater was done by the so-called “Berlin Painter of the Trichter-Gruppe” (active in 325-300 BC). He was an Etruscan vase painters of the so-called Etruscan red-figure style. His conventional name comes from this Berliner calyx-krater.

This illustration shows the Pluto system, as seen from the surface of one of the moons in the system that was discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005. Other members of the Pluto system are just above the moon's surface. Pluto is the large disk to the right of center. Pluto's large moon Charon is the smaller disk to the right of Pluto. The second moon found by Hubble is the bright dot on Pluto's far left. After their discovery was confirmed, the small moons — just 46 and 61 km across — were named Nix and Hydra, respectively.

Hubble later discovered two more moons in the system, named Kerberos and Styx (not pictured here).

This is a blend of two images: one being the composite star trail image (generated with Startrails.exe), and the other being a two-minute exposure for foreground detail. The individual images comprising the trail composite were 30-second exposures. All images used in the blend were taken consecutively within a 45-minute period at the same location.

In Greek mythology Charon took the newly dead across the river Styx providing they had a coin to pay for the ride. For that reason a corpse always had a coin placed over its eyes or under the tongue to pay the ferryman.

Something about this Leaf Curling Spider (Phonognatha graeffei) on her nest caused me to think I had met Charon.

View On Black

Discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005, Pluto's moons Nix and Hydra are roughly 5,000 times fainter than Pluto and are about two to three times farther from Pluto than its large moon, Charon.

The discovery of Nix and Hydra confirmed that the Kuiper Belt, a swarm of icy bodies encircling the solar system beyond Neptune, was more complex and dynamic than astronomers once thought. Pluto resides inside the Kuiper Belt.

The moons' orbits are in the same plane as the orbit of the much larger satellite Charon (discovered in 1978). This likely means the moons were not captured, but instead were born, along with Charon, in what is commonly theorized to have been a titanic collision between two Pluto-sized objects over 4 billion years ago.
