In Greek mythology and Roman mythology, Charon or Kharon (/ˈkɛərɒn, -ən/; Greek Χάρων) is a psychopomp, the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead.

Made the boat out of cardboard and paper so after the photoshoot it got ruined but at least it did float on the pond.

I really wanted to create the perfect image of this character!

Did you know the meaning behind her name?

In Greek mythology Styx is actually the river that the ferryman, Charon, crosses with his boat to bring the souls of the dead into the underworld (or Hades).

Engineer Charon cracks the throttle of CFL S-13 114 open, as the crew prepares to run around the train at Saint-Félix-de-Valois. Since there is no runaround at the LPG transload, the crew will shove from here up to the yard.

CFL is probably the coolest of the three MLW operators in Quebec.

The railroad rosters this exCN S-13, which was rebuilt for hump yard service, as well as former NBEC RS18u-3 3000. The railroad is a little over 11 miles long and is owned by the primary customer, Bell-Gaz propane (The 114 is painted like the delivery trucks). In addition to LPG, the railroad also moves grain, to the elevator behind me and plastic pellets for a customer by the LPG terminal.

Catching these guys can be quite hard, as they are at the mercy of QGRY, but typically run two days a week in the winter and one day or less per week in the summer.

In the moonlit depths of an enchanted garden, veiled by ivy-draped arches and winding pathways, lies a hidden passage to the underworld. Amidst the verdant foliage, a lone merman stands, turned to stone by the weight of his sorrow, his silent vigil marking the boundary between worlds. Above him, the spectral glow of Charon's lantern beckons, casting an otherworldly light upon his stony form, as whispers of lost souls echo through the night, weaving tales of longing and lament within the garden's ancient embrace."

In Greek mythology, Styx is a river that forms the boundary between Earth (Gaia) and the Underworld. The ferryman Charon is sometimes described as having transported the souls of the newly dead across this river into the Underworld. According to some legends, the river Styx had miraculous powers which could make someone who bathed in the waters invulnerable. It is said that Achilles' mother dipped him in the river during his childhood and he thus acquired invulnerability, with the exception of the heel by which his mother held him. Achilles was struck and killed during the Trojan War by an arrow shot into his heel by Paris. This is the source of the expression "Achilles' heel", a metaphor for a vulnerable spot.

This is not the river Stxy, but an oxbow lake of the Danube.

“All hope abandon, ye who enter here.”

He hates his job, but he won't be going out of business any time soon. So that's something.

In June 2015, when the cameras on NASA’s approaching New Horizons spacecraft first spotted the large reddish polar region on Pluto’s largest moon, Charon, mission scientists knew two things: they’d never seen anything like it elsewhere in our solar system, and they couldn’t wait to get the story behind it.

Over the past year, after analyzing the images and other data that New Horizons has sent back from its historic July 2015 flight through the Pluto system, the scientists think they’ve solved the mystery. As they detail this week in the international scientific journal Nature, Charon’s polar coloring comes from Pluto itself – as methane gas that escapes from Pluto’s atmosphere and becomes “trapped” by the moon’s gravity and freezes to the cold, icy surface at Charon’s pole. This is followed by chemical processing by ultraviolet light from the sun that transforms the methane into heavier hydrocarbons and eventually into reddish organic materials called tholins."

In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman of the underworld, tasked with guiding souls across the river Styx into the afterlife. He accepts an obol, a small coin, placed under the deceased's tongue as payment for passage. This ancient tradition ensured safe passage to the realm of the dead. The obol symbolized a farewell offering, a bridge between the earthly existence and the mysterious beyond. Charon's haunting presence and the ritualistic significance of the obol highlight the delicate balance between life and death, underscoring the timeless human fascination with the enigmatic journey into the unknown realms beyond mortality.

Charon, the ferryman of the underworld, collects obols from departed souls for passage across the Styx. The ancient Greek custom demanded an obol placed on the tongue or over the eyes of the deceased to pay Charon's fare. These offerings ensured safe passage to the afterlife's realm. Charon, son of Erebus and Nyx, facilitates this journey. The humble obol, equivalent to half a scruple of silver, held immense spiritual significance. For those without payment, a haunting fate awaited—doomed to wander the Stygian shores as restless spirits. Charon's role was pivotal, bridging the worlds between life and the mysterious realms beyond.
