Menars (Loir-et-Cher)
Le château de Menars (XVIIe siècle et XVIIIe).
En 1506, Jean de Taillemont fit hommage du lieu de Ménars au Comte de Blois. Cette seigneurie passa à M. Jean de Thier et de Beauremont. A cette époque ce n’était qu’une maison seigneuriale.
Le 8 septembre 1633, la terre de Ménars fut achetée par Guillaume Charon* Conseiller du Roi vers 1646. De 1633 à 1669, une première gentilhommière est bâtie par Guillaume Charon, qui acquiert de nombreux territoires et forêts environnants. Il devient Vicomte de Ménars.
Le château de Ménars, a été édifié par Jacques Charon, fils de Guillaume, échevin puis gouverneur de Blois et seigneur de Noizieux et des Hangonnières, vers 1646 (la partie centrale date de cette époque).
Son héritier (en 1669), Jean-Jacques Charon fit ajouter deux ailes inégales et aménager un parc « à la Française » avec parterres, boulingrins*, canal et pièces d'eau et deux avenues «plantées d'ormes à quatre rangs, l'une de six cents toises et l'autre de quatre cents» d'où la vue embrasse la Loire et la campagne alentour. Jean-Jacques Charon était beau-frère de Colbert, par mariage de sa soeur Marie Charon de Ménars avec le ministre de Louis XIV. En 1676, la seigneurie de Ménars alors vicomté est érigée en marquisat par Louis XIV. Son territoire est alors très étendu, allant de Mer à Villebarou et de St Claude à Maves et Averdon. Il décèdera au château de Ménars le 16 mars 1718 à l'âge de 74 ans.
En 1760, la Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764), favorite de Louis XV, rachète le château. La Marquise charge les architectes Ange-Jacques Gabriel (l'architecte du pont de Blois) et Jacques-Germain Soufflot (l'architecte de l'église Sainte-Geneviève qui deviendra le Panthéon en 1791), de remodeler profondément le château : construction de deux nouvelles ailes avec toit plat à l'italienne, en remplacement de celles du XVIIe siècle; ajout de deux pavillons de chaque côté de la cour d'honneur. L'aménagement intérieur est également revu, en particulier avec des glaces de Saint-Gobain. La marquise a donné au château son visage actuel.
Après la mort de la Marquise, en avril 1764 (à 42 ans), le frère de la Pompadour, Monsieur de Marigny (Abel-François Poisson de Vandières, marquis de Marigny, directeur général des Bâtiments du Roi), continuera les travaux sous la direction de Soufflot : Les toits plats à l'italienne des ailes sont couverts de combles; une pièce d'eau est creusée en bas du parc, etc.
La Révolution verra la création de la Commune de Ménars et la mise sous séquestre du château qui sera ensuite, vendu.
Au début du XIXème siècle (1804), le château sera occupé par le Maréchal Victor* qui y donnera des fêtes somptueuses. Fait duc de Bellune par Napoléon Ier, Claude-Victor Perrin dit Victor, revendra le domaine, en août 1827, à Emilie Pellapra et son premier mari, le Comte de Brigode de Kemland.
Emilie Pellapra* (1806-1871), surnommée «l’Aiglonne». Avec son son second mari, le Prince de Caraman–Chimay, Emilie crée dans l’enceinte du château, le Prytanée, une sorte d'école professionnelle où des jeunes gens de conditions et de nationalités différentes peuvent apprendre un métier. À cet effet, il fait bâtir un vaste établissement à l'Est de l'avant-cour, en partie conservé, ainsi qu'une petite usine à gaz pour fournir le gaz d'éclairage au collège.
Après la mort d'Emilie Pellapra en 1871, son mari le Prince de Caraman–Chimay hérite du château, mais de graves difficultés financières l'obligeront à vendre aux enchères le château de Ménars en 1876. Il meurt à Londres le 12 mars 1886.
Pendant la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870-1871, le château est transformé en hôpital. En 1871, le domaine échoit à Valentine Pellapra, princese Bibesco, qui ne peut le conserver et le vend aux enchères. La vente eut lieu le 16 juillet 1879 à la barre du tribunal de Blois et le domaine de Menars fut adjugé à M. Louis-Joseph Watel, riche entrepreur de travaux publics, pour le prix de 920.000 francs
A la mort de Louis-Joseph Watel en 1884, le domaine échoit à sa femme, Mme Watel, née Rosalie-Cécile Ambroisine Arnault.
Mme Watel est décédée à Menars le 8 août 1911, laissant pour héritiers deux fils et deux petits-fils. Le château a été vendu à la barre du tribunal civil de la Seine, le 27 avril 1912, à un certain Félix Allard* qui aurait fait fortune dans le port de Bilbao, pour le prix de 700.050 francs. Le château sera conservé par ses héritiers avant d'être acheté en 1939 par la Compagnie Saint-Gobain qui l'a utilisé comme centre de séminaires et de vacances.
Mis en vente en 1983 suite à la nationalisation de la Compagnie Saint-Gobain, il a été acquis par Edmond Baysari, homme d'affaires libano-américain ayant fait fortune dans l'immobilier.
L'entretien annuel du château à 62 chambres, géré par Linda Salem, la nièce de M. Baysari, est estimé à 450.000 euros par an. Le château a accueilli le Prince Charles, Mick Jagger, et même Ronald Reagan et Mikhaïl Gorbatchev(L'Orient le Jour).
Suite à un litige fiscal, Edmond Baysari, l'actuel propriétaire, à annoncé fin 2017, par l'intermédiaire de son avocat Jack Anderson, la mise en vente aux enchères du domaine. Edmond Baysari, homme d'affaires basé à Monaco, avait déboursé deux millions d'euros pour acheter le domaine, il aurait dépensé plus de 100 millions € pour rénover le château. La mise en vente pour une somme de 20 à 30 millions € constitue donc une bonne affaire pour l'acquéreur.
* Guillaume Charon, né en 1604, est issu d’une famille qui cultivait la vigne à Montlivault (à une dizaine de kilomètres de Blois). Guillaume Charon devint conseiller du roi et trésorier général de l’extraordinaire des guerres. Il achète en 1633 la terre de Ménars, y fait construire un château dans le style Louis XIII qui constitue l’élément central du château actuel. Il développe le domaine qui devient l’un des plus riches du comté de Blois. Il est anobli et le domaine de Ménars est érigé en vicomté en 1657. Il meurt en 1669 et est enseveli dans le chœur de l’église de Ménars.
* Boulingrin viendrait de "bowling-green". C'est un parterre en creux et gazonné.
* Claude-Victor Perrin, dit "Victor", maréchal d'Empire, fait duc de Bellune par Napoléon Ier. Général de la révolution, il deviendra maréchal d'Empire puis Ministre de la Guerre de Louis XVIII. Il prêtra successivement allégeance au Royaume de France, à la République française, à l'Empire, et de nouveau au Royaume de France.
Dans son livre (Le Maréchal Victor- Nouveau Monde edition/Fondation Napoléon -2004) , Jacques Le Coustumier relate : "Dans son histoire de la restauration, de Waresquiel résume le cursus politique de Victor pour le roi. "Le maréchal d'Empire qui a donné le plus de gages au ultras en suivant le roi à Gand, puis en acceptant, à l'indignation de, ses frères d'armes, de présider la commission chargée de juger la conduite des officiers lors des Cents-Jours. Pair de france, il a montré patte blanche en votant la mort de Ney." (...) Indisciplinés, les ultra sont aussi turbulents, mais fidèles au roi malgré tout. Ils sont "la Droite." C'est dans ce groupe que milite victor, jusqu'à sa mort." Dans le même ouvrage, Le Coustumier révèle que le Maréchal Victor est un membre actif des chevaliers de la Foi, puissante société secrète royaliste.
Louis XVIII chargera Victor, en avril 1821, d'une mission d'inspection des départements parmi les plus agités depuis 1816 ( la Saône-et-Loire, l’Ain, le Rhône et l’Isère). Dans son rapport, "Loin d’apaiser et de pacifier les esprits, Victor appuie de son autorité la répression et la purge organisée par le préfet de l’Isère Charles Lemercher de Longpré d’Haussez (1778-1854)." * Emilie Pellapra est la fille d’un riche financier (Henri Pellapra, banquier à Lyon). Emilie Louise Marie Françoise Joséphine de Pellapra nait à Lyon en 1806. Elle prétendait être une fille naturelle de Napoléon Ier et se faisait appeler «l’Aiglonne».
Epouse à 18 ans du Comte Louis-Marie de Brigode qui a 30 ans de plus, et devenue veuve deux ans après son mariage en 1825, elle hérite de la fortune de son mari et du Château de Ménars. En 1830 elle se remarie avec Joseph de Riquet de Camaran, prince de Chimay en Belgique. Le couple aura 4 enfants : Emilie, Joseph, Eugène, et Valentine qui sera la future princesse Bibesco. Emilie meurt à Ménars le 22 mai 1871. Elle repose prés de sa mère, dans la crypte de la chapelle qui est au centre du cimetière. Emilie Pellapra, devenue princesse de Chimaypar son second mariage, est la grand-mère de la comtesse Greffulhe, qui servira de modèle à Proust pour créer le personnage de la duchesse de Guermantes.
* Félix Allard (1851 - 1926) était un des entrepreneurs français qui participèrent au chantier de l'avant-port de Bilbao en utilisant des méthodes nouvelles (matériel mû par l'électricité, fondations par des caissons sous air comprimé...)

A zoetrope by the inimitable Peter Hudson (who you may remember from the American Dream TantalUS and Homouroboros Monkey Tree zoetropes of years past).
What the hell is a zoetrope and how does it work? From wikipedia:
a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid succession of static pictures. The term zoetrope is from the Greek words "zoe", "life" and τρόπος - tropos, "turn". It may be taken to mean "wheel of life".
Though in this case, quite cleverly: wheel of death. And rather than pictures, this device uses three-dimensional forms to create an animation. Most effective at night, the wheel comes to life when 12 people collaborate to tug on giant ropes which set the wheel into motion. Once it reaches the proper speed, a strobe light is activated, lighting each form in succession giving the illusion of fluid motion.
Represented here is Charon, the mythological ferryman who carries the souls of the deceased across the river Styx to Hades.

I have an idea for a series of photo albums. Mostly these albums will have handmade wooden covers. The edges of the album paper will lined with Mylar, and I will ask people who want to look at them to wear white cotton gloves. The books are going to be expensive, and I don't want them to become shopworn.
I hope to get into Codex, which is a biennial show in the Bay Area, the premier show case for handmade books.
I have ideas for many books. The first idea I had was called Countdown: Ten photos, starting with ten and ending with one. there had to be something in each photo that expressed it's number, but sometimes quite subtle (sometimes obvious) in giving up its secret.
Subsequently, I imagined The Darks (photos with an underexposed figure, so the face and body of the figure reads as totally black) and The Lights, overexposed, so faces are gone (or sometimes cut out of the photo, or excised by some light leak).
I could go on and name other categories. So far, the only one that tells a story is called Snow Job.
For many the books, I have a # of photos, well in excess of what I needs, so I can pick ad choose. One of my problems, a life long problem, most expecially with writing, is coming up with a suitable ending. But when I saw this photo, I immediately knew it was a fitting ending for The Darks. Charon of course was the mythical figure who ferried the dead across the Acheron and the Styx to the underworld.
I don't think an album has a happy ending. Sonny /Franzese, one of the nest prolific and grisly mob bosses and hitmen (that sleazebag Frank Sinatra kissed his ring, lived to103 and seemed quite content at the end.
Life isn't fair, as Jimmy Carter and many others have said.
Peter Hudson, a featured visual artist at Phases of the Moon Music and Art Festival, created Charon. Charon is a life-sized three dimensional stroboscopic zoetrope focusing on the last rite of human passage, death. It features a gigantic spinning wheel with posed human skeletons mounted on its inner edge.
My previous Nnovvember entry in the colors and design I'd originally planned. Ended up changing things around in the interest of finishing it before the end of the month:

Small MOCs like this get easier to turn out in Blender as my collections of parts, textures, and materials grow. Here though, the regular blue color is giving me trouble. Even on my monitor it's subtly wrong somehow.

- The famous cave-church of St.s Peter and Paul was closed for "restoration" (how to restore a cave?) and the guard couldn't be bribed. I wasn't too disappointed though as the use of the cave by early Christians is a myth, and it wasn't given to the Christian community for use as a church until the middle ages. It might have been used as a temple or shrine for pagan worship, but it was no place for early Christians to worship in secret and in peace right near the centre of the ancient city, and no reference was made to it in ancient sources while other long-gone Byzantine churches were well known. Ruins of a famous cathedral built in Justinian's time were visible until just a few centuries ago. My cynical theory as to why the cave-church has been closed (and will be for 10 more months I was told) is to discourage tourist groups and pilgrims from visiting Antakya for the time being and near future, until the messy business of overthrowing Assad and installing a compliant, western-client government is wrapped up.

Charon is a life sized three-dimensional stroboscopic zoetrope focusing on the last rite of human passage, death.
This piece will physically engage participants in a vigorous genuflection of sorts to bring life to Charon, the gondolier to the afterlife. Charon asks them to reflect on their own mortality and ponder how to give and get the most from their brief time here on earth. The artist’s hope is that they will not dwell on their ultimate demise, but ponder how they might make their own lives richer and more meaningful. Recent losses in the artist’s life give him reason to consider the piece a final farewell and bon voyage to those who are cherished, gone but not forgotten.

In order to cross the river Acheron in der Underworld, it was necessary to apply to Charon, the official ferryman. His fee was an obol (a Greek ancient small silver coin), and the Greeks therefore occasionally placed an obol in the mouths of the dead.
Here we see Charon in his boat on the reedy banks of the river receiving the soul of a dead person which is shown as a small winged creature, “eidolon”.

They found the Charon adrift in deep space, apparently abandoned.
