In Greek mythology, Charon or Kharon (in Greek, Χάρων — the bright) was the ferryman of Hades who carried souls of the newly deceased across the river that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay Charon for passage, usually an obolus or danake, was sometimes placed on or in the mouth of a dead person. Those who could not pay the fee, or those whose bodies were left unburied, had to wander the shores for one hundred years. In the catabasis mytheme, heroes — such as Heracles, Orpheus, Aeneas, Dionysus and Psyche — journey to the underworld and return, still alive, conveyed by the boat of Charon.

To answer some queries, this is not digitally processed. I used a circular polarizer and a yellow filter just before sunset.

Überfahrt in die Unterwelt - Charon crossing the Styx (1520 - 25)

Museo del Prado, Madrid

In addition to the originality of its subject, this painting by Patinir is also remarkable for its unusual composition within Patinir`s oeuvre. The artist has divided the space vertically into three zones, one on either side and the third occupied by the broad river in the centre, on whose opaque and mirror-like surface Charon steers his boat. For the iconography of this subject, Patinir draws together biblical images and classical sources. An angel on the promontory, another two accompanying the souls not far away, and a few more with other tiny souls in the background allow us to recognize the paradise on the left as a Christian heaven, not the Elysean Fields. On the other hand, the dog Cerberus seems to identify the inferno shown on the right as Hades, thus associating it with Greek mythology, as do Charon and his boat.

The painter places the scene at the moment when Charon has reached a point mid-way between the channels opening on either side of the Styx. Each man, or in this case each human soul, is responsible for choosing their ultimate destination when the hour of death arrives. Patinir shows the soul in strict profile, with the face and body turned towards the easy path to perdition, indicating that the choice has been made.

This idea was expressed in the late Middle Ages by a whole range of metaphors, both biblical and classical. Out of all of them, Patinir appears to have taken his prime inspiration from St Matthew`s Gospel. There is no doubt that Patinir here reflects the pessimism of his turbulent times, with the Protestant Reformation gaining momentum after the appearance of Martin Luther`s Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg in 1517. Patinir thus converts this work into a memento mori, a reminder to all those who contemplate it that they must prepare for the moment of death, and that the hard road must be chosen in imitation of Christ, ignoring false paradises and deceitful temptations.

When the painting is viewed as a whole, it is once again the landscape which predominates. Whether borrowings or evocations, the influences of Bosch are minimized by reducing the number of demons and damned souls, and by scaling them down in size -like the angels, the chosen ones and the animals in paradise- until they are barely perceptible in the background. Regarding authorship, both the drawing and the handling of the colour layer point to an autograph work executed by Patinir without collaborators, since the central figure of Charon displays the painter`s own characteristic hallmarks.

Charon, the resolute ferryman of Hell. Souls who do not pay his price must wander the Acheron shore for a century. His oars make little sound as they tirelessly cut through the chill waters.

What a difference 40 years makes. An enhanced color image of Charon from data gathered by the New Horizons spacecraft in 2015 shows a range of diverse surface features, significantly transforming our view of a moon discovered in 1978 as a “bump” on Pluto (inset) in a set of grainy telescope images.

New Horizons has obtained impressive new images of Pluto and its large moon Charon that highlight their compositional diversity. These are not actual color images of Pluto and Charon—they are shown here in exaggerated colors that make it easy to note the differences in surface material and features on each planetary body.

The images were obtained using three of the color filters of the “Ralph” instrument on July 13 at 3:38 am EDT. New Horizons has seven science instruments on board the spacecraft—including “Ralph” and “Alice”, whose names are a throwback to the “Honeymooners,” a popular 1950s sitcom.

“These images show that Pluto and Charon are truly complex worlds. There's a whole lot going on here,” said New Horizons co-investigator Will Grundy, Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, Arizona. “Our surface composition team is working as fast as we can to identify the substances in different regions on Pluto and unravel the processes that put them where they are.”

The color data helps scientists understand the molecular make-up of ices on the surfaces of Pluto and Charon, as well as the age of geologic features such as craters. They can also tell us about surface changes caused by space “weather,” such as radiation.

The new color images reveal that the “heart” of Pluto actually consists of two remarkably different-colored regions. In the false-color image, the heart consists of a western lobe shaped like an ice cream cone that appears peach color in this image. A mottled area on the right (east) side looks bluish. A mid-latitude band appears in shades ranging from pale blue through red. Even within the northern polar cap, in the upper part of the image, various shades of yellow-orange indicate subtle compositional differences. This image was obtained using three of the color filters of the Ralph instrument on July 13 at 3:38 am EDT and received on the ground on at 12:25 pm.

Charon is Just as Colorful

The surface of Charon is viewed using the same exaggerated color. The red on the dark northern polar cap of Charon is attributed to hydrocarbon and other molecules, a class of chemical compounds called tholins. The mottled colors at lower latitudes point to the diversity of terrains on Charon. This image was obtained using three of the color filters of the Ralph instrument on July 13 at 3:38 am EDT and received on the ground on at 12:25 pm.

“We make these color images to highlight the variety of surface environments present in the Pluto system,” said Dennis Reuter, co-investigator with the New Horizons Composition Team. “They show us in an intuitive way that there is much still to learn from the data coming down.”

Due to the three-billion-mile distance to Pluto, data takes 4 ½ hours to come to Earth, even at the speed of light. It will take 16 months for all of New Horizons’ science data to be received, and the treasure trove from this mission will be studied for decades to come.

Image Caption: Pluto and Charon in False Color Show Compositional Diversity

This July 13, 2015, image of Pluto and Charon is presented in false colors to make differences in surface material and features easy to see. It was obtained by the Ralph instrument on NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, using three filters to obtain color information, which is exaggerated in the image. These are not the actual colors of Pluto and Charon, and the apparent distance between the two bodies has been reduced for this side-by-side view.

The image reveals that the bright heart-shaped region of Pluto includes areas that differ in color characteristics. The western lobe, shaped like an ice-cream cone, appears peach color in this image. A mottled area on the right (east) appears bluish. Even within Pluto's northern polar cap, in the upper part of the image, various shades of yellow-orange indicate subtle compositional differences.

At 7:49 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 14 New Horizons sped past Pluto at 30,800 miles per hour (49,600 kilometers per hour), with a suite of seven science instruments. As planned, New Horizons went incommunicado as it hurtled through the Pluto-Charon system busily gathering data. The New Horizons team will breathe a sigh of relief when New Horizons “phones home” at approximately 9:02 p.m. EDT on July 14. The mission to the icy dwarf planet completes the initial reconnaissance of the solar system.

ну первый опыт в это деле тоже опыт. Ну навеное)))

Charon's Garden Wilderness (Charon being the ferryman of Hades in Greek mythology, and properly pronounced "Karen") is a rugged landscape of wind sculpted granite summits and canyons, odd rock formations, and great climbing and hiking. Its 5,723 acres are a part of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge reserved for day hiking and limited backcountry camping. It is the location of several good climbing summits (for Oklahoma!), including Elk Mountain, Mount Lincoln, Granite Mountain, Twin Rocks Mountain, Crab Eyes and Sunset Peak (among others). These offer a variety of climbing activities, from class 1 to 5.11c. But, much of the climbing is across the granite rock slabs and boulders that make up a large part of the wilderness. Because the ground is rocky, the area has remained "protected" from the farmer's plow, allowing native grasses to thrive. Within Charon's Garden are pockets of post oak tree thickets. And the low-lying locations offer grassy, marsh-like areas along a number of small, seasonal streams. These areas become a virtual riot of color when the wildflowers bloom in the spring. The barren, desert wastelands of Fenris VI are a known refuge for smugglers, ruffians, and mercenaries; the black markets there attract such scoundrels.

But there's a section of the great desert Khras, beset by constant sandstorms, that even the cutthroats won't venture into anymore. Rumors of a mobile frame rising from the sand and hewing apart anything in its path, as if it was the fury of the desert itself, have kept them clear.

Yet every now and again, one doesn't heed the warnings, doesn't believe the tales, and ventures into the violent sandstorm. And there, the Charon and its mysterious pilot, lay in wait amongst the sands.

Post Oak Falls from the trail. This is an easy 1 and half mile hike to this location most of the time. Given the record rains that month, you did need to where golashes due to high water, but normally that's not required. The post oak falls trail is an offshoot from the Charons Garden Trail in the south part of Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Indiahoma, Okalhoma, USA, May 2015

In the mithology, Charon is the one who is paid with coins to carry the souls of the dead to the underworld. The souls of those who can not pay the coin is trapped in this world. This is the starting point of my new work.

In this photo, you see the character passing through a sea of blood to the other world.there is a borderline in the middle. The body stays in this world and the soul carries on on the spiritual level.
