Each year, we get gifts we don't really need. Some we don't even want. America is about to spend another $450 billion to celebrate the holidays - that's enough to solve the water crisis several times over.
This holiday season I want to help Charity Water build wells to provide clean water. Join me and help create a ripple of good around the world with random acts of kindness.
When I learned that only $20 can give someone clean, safe water for two decades, I decided to start a campaign to help. Now, my goal is to raise $1000 to build wells in developing nations.
And the cool thing about charity: water is that they spend 100% of the money I raise directly on the water projects. Even better, when projects are complete, every dollar is tied to village and all the wells are posted on Google Earth.
So here's my pitch: Skip Starbucks for one day and donate the $5 bucks to help Charity Water build fresh water wells in Africa!

Opal is a color-change stone. When you spin the stone around, colours might appear or disappear, or change completely. It's quite magical. This is NOT a gem-quality opal, rather it's a boulder opal, because the opal veins are embedded in a brownstone called ironstone.
Had the entire stone displayed the colourful patches, this stone would have costed probably USD $8,000 and up!

Of all the beautiful and expensive gemstones that I cannot afford, opal is the one that I like the most.
High-quality precious black opals from Australia can cost easily between USD $5,000 to $15,000 each. Opal is a natural amorphous silica with a water content varying from one to twenty percent, depending on the porosity and degree of hydration. Precious opal usually contains from six to ten percent water. The chemical formula for opal is SiO2·nH2O.
Thankfully I came across this boulder opal for only USD $14. I can afford that!
Basically, a boulder opal is an opal embedded in a brown rock called ironstone, like the one you see here. Had the entire gemstone displayed the colourful and colour-changing nature, this opal would have been worth probably around USD $8,000. But because only very few stripes (known as veins) display the colourful diffraction of light, this stone is not considered gem-quality, which is why it goes for less than USD $100. In my case, bidding ended at USD $14 so I was quite lucky.
Some interesting facts about opal:
1) Green and blue play of colour is most common, red less so.
2) Because of the unusual way opal is formed, and how light is diffracted from it, colour may appear or disappear under different light sources, or may change from one colour to another completely.
3) Depending on the play of colour, the value of an opal can vary significantly.
4) As a natural silica, opals are very fragile. Drop it on a hard surface and cracks can appear, or worse still, the whole piece might shatter.
Also remember, this opal only measures 17.2 mm x 12.1 mm, so the photos shown here have been magnified by 3 times, if not more.
The seller of the opals on eBay post videos of the stones. And this is a video of the stone I bought.

People are crazy and times are strange
I’m locked in tight, I’m out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

In the Western Balkans region, achieving efficient and modern internal transport networks and infrastructure and communication networks between the region’s countries will be a key enabler of economic growth and transition. This is a political priority of the countries themselves and the European Union, because it is an important means of improving links across the region and integrating the countries in the area into the political and economic mainstream of Europe (Matsoukis, 2008). A series of infrastructure and increasing costs to build and maintain roads and supplies. Railway systems are similarly vulnerable. Inland navigation will more often be faced with restrictions associated with extremely low and high river discharges. Changes in transport capacity may lead to changes in transport costs or to a shift between transport modalities. Economic impacts are closely related to the frequency of events that damage, disrupt and restrict transport, and the availability of transport alternatives. Furthermore, the costs associated with monitoring and maintenance of these networks is likely to increase. Few studies exist on the impacts of climate change on the transport networks within the region, including the mountainous areas. However, one study on the EU-27 transport network can give some indication of potential economic costs of climate change for the region. For road infrastructure, weather stresses already represent 30 per cent to 50 per cent of current road maintenance costs in Europe. Ten per cent of these costs (0.9 billion euro) are associated with extreme events, with flooding taking the lead. A significant extra cost for road transport infrastructures is projected due to more frequent extreme precipitation and flooding events (50–192 million euros per year between 2040–2100). At the same time, increasing temperatures could reduce road costs related to maintenance operations in colder areas (for snow and ice) (JRC, 2012).

My LED doorbell project from 2005. This uses an Atmel Attiny12 to drive a single 5mm, 4-lead RGB LED embedded in the doorbell switch (I drilled into it to remove the original incandescent bulb). Power is taken parasitically from the doorbell transformer (16 VAC, if I remember correctly) in the attic of the house somewhere, and the switch shorts the whole thing, ringing the bell and resetting the microcontroller. The color cycle starts with pure white upon reset, providing a visual indication the ring has occurred.
Unfortunately, the switch itself only lasted for a few years, and now I have to rebuild the thing, maybe with capacitive touch instead!

Change is ominous. Change is obvious and desirable. As abrupt as it can be, the more appeal can it bring. And what else can bring it faster than the wings? This photo was taken at the horticulture garden in Alipore, Kolkata. My most favorite photo of that day. I found myself lucky enough to get this moment, I was looking for so many months.
Take a better look in black
Up ahead, you can just start to see the second of the chain of three lakes in the upper Tensleep Valley. This is Lake Marion, a smaller lake in a narrower portion of canyon. I'd argue it's prettier here than down at Lake Helen. Our original plan had been to continue on past this point about a half-mile to Misty Moon Lake, but all the other backpackers we'd talked to on the trail--including a pack of boy scouts--had the same plan. Also, Misty Moon sits at the junction of several trails, and I was starting to think things up there might get crowded. Meanwhile, we were tired, the sky was starting to look really questionable, and we happened upon a perfect little flat spot just over a hundred feet from the water, so this was where we stopped. Lake Marion it would be.
BWM K1600GTL - stuff I've changed or added ... accesories.
I get quite a few message from folks either here, Instagram or YouTube asking how I like the bike or what changes have I made. So I went for a ride and took pictures of the items I've changed/added. Most recently, I added the side stand foot.
Anyway, no particular order:
- Cee Bailey windshield - inch wider on each side and a light tint vs the stock ... the contour helped reduce buffeting.
- Seat/saddle - Russell Day Long saddle - sent them the pan and it was customized to Laura and I based on inseam, height & weight plus our inputs. This was the best improvement for me. They retained the seat heaters.
- Luggage Rack - It is a Honda OEM rack for the Gold Wing - GL1800 ... I liked it better than the BWM aftermarket selection and I made it work.
- Engine guard - Altrider
- Side stand foot - Altrider
- Handlebar bag - Touratech ... this fits my iPhone7plus, toll cash and in a ziplock a copy of my registration, insurance and license. Easy place to put business cards that you are handed and other stuff. Great utility bag.
- Top case brake light - BMW OEM aftermarket install ... didn't come standard ... helps people know I'm braking. So far, no one has rear ended me.

On the 26th April 2017 the "Bert Prior" (1961, 289DWT) enters Deptford Creek at Greenwich enroute to Brewery Wharf. The vessel is carrying a cargo of concrete aggregates from Fingringhoe, Essex and is the last example of traditional coastal barge operations on the Thames. This creek use to be a very industrial including a large power station and mills. Today only one wharf remains and high rise development is taking over as per mmuch of the Capital.
{38 - change} 52 of you
been thinking about change all week due to 52 of you prompt. i like the cooler temps of the fall, yet i don't really enjoy winter as i did when i lived in NY. the light i have to say that is one of the things i miss most about this change to fall and then winter. the change in the colors are beautiful also the lights golden glow is pretty. changes that i guess are on my mind are how the world changes as my kids get older, i have a teen and pre-teen, they are amazing kids. i do find myself hoping i have given them all they need to be full of joy and safe in the world. sometimes i wish this parenting job came with a manual and a person that raised amazing kids next to me to answer all my questions. all i know i can do is love them as i do for who they are and keep the lines of communication open for them. i need to also remember to take all the changes lightly and jump for the joy i have all around me.i ♥ you s & b !!!
This is how he has changed over the years. His character went through a lot too!

As of 2014, he is on a Dollzone body and no longer has the SG body or the Heliot God Master hands. :)
I love him to bits!
The Islands are so desolate and lonely in the winter time, which was nice to take pictures in peace. But the thing that really bothered me was that there were no convenience stores or snack vending machines. What's up with that?!?! We were so frigging hungry!
