Kenya, like the rest of the world, is experiencing climate change and variability and the associated adverse impacts. This photo series looks at the Olkiramatian area, a group ranch area in southern Kenya’s Kajiado district at the south of the Rift Valley. Olkiramatian implements a successful system of communal open rangeland management which is based on traditional Masai techniques but which divides the valley for three different uses: grazing, cultivation and conservation. Grazing accounts for around 75 per cent with each registered member raising their own herd of livestock. A second zone where fresh water flows down from the Nguruman hills behind, is dedicated to crops - each member is allocated five to ten hectares which they cultivate themselves or lease to others to grow maize, tomatoes or the leafy vegetable Sukuma wiki (kale). The third zone - one-eighth of the total area - is a shared resource designated as a conservation area for wildlife which brings in tourism and acts as a dry season grazing bank which, with group consensus, can be opened to livestock in times of severe feed shortage.
The photo series was taken during the areas dry season and shows the issues that are surfacing due to the gradual climate change of less rainfall, with failed rains becoming increasingly likely. The changes are gradual but are noticeable.
The level of the Ewaso Nyiro river, the areas lifeline, in some areas fell by 12ft. The crop-growing zone suffered very little water in all of the rivers and streams with generators being used to pump water from the Ewaso Nyiro river into the drying soil of the crops. In the grazing zones, the wildlife or livestock grass literally vanished leaving pastures of thick fine dust. Masai children are taken out of school in order to take care of the livestock that are now needing to travel greater distances from the homesteads to find any form of pasture. These greater distances mean the livestock return later to the boma or homestead, often after sunset.
Even an organized successful rangeland system such as this suffers loss of its wildlife and livestock with less rainfall. As pressure on resources increases, our need to implement protection and mitigation strategies becomes even greater.
Hello Fellow Humans,
We here in the heart of Woodstock Ontario had a fantastic Day on 10/10/10, we had over 40 people give their email in support and interest in making our local community a strong sustainable one. We had a Solar Panelled truck powering a 52" tv, large P.A. system with wireless mic, a computer to play documentaries and 350 stuff on throughout the day, and free cell phone charges. We gave away over 25 trees to plant, most of our tables were made out of recycled skids, and we had a demonstration of how to clean up oil naturally with hay. We hope to bring a co-op store and buying group, live music to involve the youth, and regular democracy rallies, because democracy doesn't work just voting and protesting and goin' home. We need to and are going to, have a vibrant cultural resurgence, God willing. Lead the way as you have already gathered many under the hope of autonomous collective moral governance.

I took this picture last week as I was walking across the street to the Abbey. It shows the beautiful colors of the leaves as the seasons change. In this picture we see plenty of organic matter around the bushes and trees. Organic Matter is material from anything that once lived including plants, animals, and microbes. Within the soil that is under neath the bushes trees, decomposition occurs. Decomposition is the breakdown of plant derived material into its simpler organic constituents. It is very important for plants and trees to be decomposed as it keeps them healthy as well as the other plants and animals within there environment. #Image3

Kashmir Joins Global Climate Rallies to Move Beyond Fossil Fuels
350 school children in Srinagar joined a demonstration for clean
energy today, one of thousands of events that took place over 176
countries for “Moving Planet,” a global day of action to “move the
planet away from fossil fuels.”

The school children demanded action for climate crisis and to SAVE
WATERBODIES OF KASHMIR. After all it is the question of their future.
Waterbodies are lifeline of kashmir and their rapid degradation is the
clear signal that by the time these children grow up these waterbodies
will become part of history. The children also emphasized the need to
be part of the global movement against fossil fuels as we have to
reach the target of 350 to prevent climate crisis on the planet.
Events involving school children of eco clubs are being organized by
J&K State Pollution Control Board and IYCN in all 10 districts of
Kashmir too as part of Moving Planet movement and Project Green
Generation.
After the boat rally on Dal Lake, there was a formation of boats in an
arrow shape to signify that “WE ARE MOVING IN A NEW DIRECTION TO SAVE
OUR PLANET FROM CLIMATE CRISIS AND ENSURE A SAFE CLIMATE FUTURE FOR
OUR NEXT GENERATION.
The event in Srinagar was organized by J&K State Pollution Control
Board, IYCN (Indian Youth climate Network) J&K chapter and was
supported by NLCO (Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization) Kashmir
Private school association.

Decided to head out to my local yard on a Saturday, got there at 9:30 and I was the only one out at the freight side platform. After a half hour I noticed someone down at the other end that I thought I recognized. Messaged him, and yep, it was him. My dude PasadenaSubColin.
We were both out there to just enjoy the day, me catching freights, and him freights & Metrolinks. He's a good dude to have around, as he lets me know when something cool is on its way into the yard, and I appreciate that he's all plugged into the grid to give the "heads up" when something's coming soon.
Well, this time I had, or rather found out, the "Heads Up" about 15 mins before he let me in on what would be the joke of the day. There apparently was a bicentennial engine coming through the depot today on its way to a RR museum in Perris, CA. The 5704!!!!! Big whoop.... One dude chatted me up asking if I knew when "IT" was supposed to come through. I had no idea what he was talking about and told him I don't follow trains. :-)
15-20 mins. later Colin messages me an FYI, that there's a "Special" train about to roll through. I've been in this situation before. I'm there benching graff, and all of the sudden 20 cars pull up and a bunch of "Railfans" jump out of their cars, run over, take a few photos of the "Special" car(s), engine or train, and when it's gone, they're gone. I feel like these are the people who only get out of bed when something "cool" is rolling through town. I really doubt they care about day-to-day operations of the RR. And honestly there's no way they give a shit about the graff.
Most people out at the tracks are cool, but there's a certain group of people who seem to have zero social skills when something "Special" is coming through, and we had at least one on this day. Some dude that kept walking past us, standing in my spot, like he was going to shoot from there when I got there at 9:30, and he got there at Noon. Walking past us by inches, and not saying a word, head down... Walking in front of cameras that were filming, hanging around my backpack and gear while I was like 30 feet away, just weird, un-cool shit. I'm not down with any of this. But I don't want to burn this spot as a bencher and didn't start any trouble, even though I wanted to punch this dude.. GRRR!
Will not be posting flicks of this special train car. Sorry. I saw it, I flicked it, but the whole experience was crap, and it was just one engine, big deal. I was there for the graff that you're seeing me post.
Was hot, no clouds, and at my end of the platform I had a 2ft. x 3ft. spot of slowly moving shade that was cast by one of the platform lights. After a while Colin and I were sharing this tiny moving spot of shade. No worries, we get along just fine.
BTW: PasadenaSubColin is a FOAMER!!!!!!!! ;-p
Managed to re-flick a few cars that I caught at the beginning of the month at the other end of the valley. Anyway........ I'll be back to try and ID these pieces soon. Might take me a little longer than usual as, like I said before, new computer, new crap to deal with..

Had a photo shoot with my friend Daniel at the Westin La Cantera. We had very little time and got a few good shots. This wasn't planned, he was just getting up and I was looking at myself at the mirror, so I decided to snap this. This is a mirror image.
This was inspired by Annie Leibovitz lighting.
