At my local quilt guild, we are going to do several challenges with our scraps this year. The first was to make something witih squares and rectangles with our scraps. All but the grey were scraps from some blocks I made last year (which haven't yet become a quilt). I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. It will be donated to the local NICU as part of our charity work as a guild. Enjoy and thanks for viewing.

Day 300 of 365 - is Black Cat Day. Nothing is quite as elegant as a black cat—like a miniature Amazonian jaguar, they doze atop the highest point in the area, waking for several hours daily to prowl around hunting for a tasty morsel. But black cats and kittens are often overlooked when animal shelters are looking for new homes, and can be at the shelter much longer than they should be. So why is this?Interestingly, cats in ancient Egypt were revered highly, partly due to their ability to combat vermin such as mice, rats. Cats of royalty were known to be dressed in golden jewelry and were allowed to eat right off their owners’ plates. The goddess of warfare was a woman with the head of a cat named Bastet. These days, however, black cats are often are seen as unlucky or mischievous, but not everyone knows why that is. In Celtic mythology, it was believed that fairies could take the form of black cats, and therefore their arrival to a home or village was seen as sign of good luck. Unfortunately, the Pilgrims that came after them were devoutly religious and fearful of anything remotely related to the pagan beliefs of their ancestors, and it was because of that fear that black cats went from being seen as the vessels of fairies to the vessels of witches and demons. At that time it became common practice to severely punish those who kept black cats as pets, and even kill the animals themselves. Although these days nobody really believes black cats are witches or demons in disguise anymore, they are still often seen as signs of bad luck by many people in the West. If you have a cat, especially a black one, today is the day to make it feel extra special, and give your cat back some of the love they give you on a daily basis. Buy your cat a new toy or a tasty treat and spend the afternoon playing tug-of-war or rubbing its belly—nobody knows how to enjoy the little things in life like cats do. If you’ve been thinking about getting a cat of your own and have the time to take proper care of it, maybe today should be the day you welcome a furry feline into your life? And even if you can’t have a cat due to allergies or other reasons, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate this day! Making a small donation to your local animal shelter can help countless felines and get you in good with the cats of this world . . . you know just in case they really do have magic powers!

NOTE: This is a photo of Faith, she was my sisters cat, she recently passed away at the age of 19. My sister bought her when she was 8 weeks old, they had a great life together.

Eleonore is spending too much time on her career and too little time on her private life: this morning she noticed it for the first time. It was shocking, crossing the corridors between the offices, seeing the first light of dawn and realizing that she had been working all night ...

This theme is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Numbers are everywhere, and the same is true in dolly life. The only requirement for this theme is that you must include a doll and at least one number somewhere in your photo. Think buttons on telephones, price tags on sale items, and numbered street signs. Think scoreboards, arcade games, and, airports screens. The possibilities are infinite!

I love sunflowers, they symbolize for me all the positive and happy things in the world, so I had fun with this challenge. Loved the logo, so tried to keep it recognizable in my version.

Compositionally Challenged week 43 is Fall - While the challenge is about time of year, a I have my doubts that Sharon has a werewolf in mind. My bad. My glad.

Walmart has their Greeters. Not to be outdone, Lowes has come up with their own.

Every household should have their very own werewolf to greet their Trick-or-Treaters. And for only $112.49 (originally $149.99), you can get yours at Lowes home center. It has a motion sensor that wakes it up when anyone approaches. The head and mouth move. It growls, snarls, and howls. And the eyes glow with a green light. When it greeted me at Lowes today, I was surprised - and laughed out loud with glee. What fun!

MMI Couples Challenge

Brice and I chose the Hollywood Power Couple, Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara from the award winning movie, Gone With The Wind. Rhett Butler was a lovable scoundrel and rogue. A man of means with a past, he has a reputation for womanizing and gambling but Rhett is a man to be reckoned with and he sets his sights on the spoiled, petulant and very beautiful Scarlett O'Hara. She's 15 years his junior but she's never met a man like Rhett, although it takes some time for the two of them to come together. With his wealth and resources and her determination and charm they wielded influence and power in the south. Their relationship was a stormy one full of ups and downs. Our favorite look on Scarlett and Rhett was the evening outfits they wore to attend a special birthday party for Ashley Wilkes. Decked out in their finery with their opulence on display they made a gorgeous couple. Their relationship was a rocky one and even in the ending scene of the movie we watch as Rhett walks out the door. Will he return? We believe in happy endings so we choose to think so. We attempted to duplicate these outfits for our Couples Challenge using the following items listed below in our styling credits. Scarlett wore a red velvet gown. beaded at the bodice, with dyed ostrich feathers and a light pink almost transparent wrap. Rhett wore a fashionable tuxedo of the day in black with a top hat.

It broke my heart that for this challenge I was disqualified. I forgot about the rules regarding the required photo for the technical aspect and used a background props. I could have been in rank 1... : lesson learned....

Yup, those three words, they're um, quite common in these parts right now. Actually, they're common right throughout the Principality, and the tentacles of Arrivaland that stretch out into England.

Y'see, ongoing operational challenges, that's Arriva speak for the following...

No crew to work the train.

ATW has gotten itself into a wee bit of a pickle you see. The crews they have are spread rather thinly at the best of times. No, let's tell it as it is. There's not enough of them. Period. Add in the summer holiday season, an 'unusually' high absence level, whatever that is, and a bit of a reluctance of 'the brothers' to do the odd rest day here and there, and you've got the toxic stew that the inhabitants of St. Mary's House CF10 5DJ find themselves in.

Cancellations are rife right now, 5 on the Cambrian last Saturday, more today, more tomorrow. The last train in each direction tonight between the rural English outposts of Chester and Manchester is canned.

It's been going on some time now, albeit without the publicity surrounding the Southern dispute. But it has noticeably worsened in the last month, and shows no sign of abating.

Another issue that keeps cropping up is the substitution of the hauled sets by units. 9 times out of 10, it's not down to train faults, it's purely because there are so few crews trained to operate the loco hauled stock. So, on summer Saturdays, you have two perfectly good trains sitting in depots at Holyhead and Crewe doing nothing, while dispatch staff at Ludo Junction and all points east are having to use Japanese style crush loading tactics to try get everyone onboard two or three car units.

Our friends in Cardiff, the highly rewarded management of Arriva Trains Wales, really need to start and earn those inflated pay cheques by getting these issues sorted. And soon.

Meanwhile, the ongoing operational challenges will persist. Is this really how to run a railway?

Rant over. For now.

For the one layer challenge... and what a CHALLENGE it was (don't ask). ;) I printed my pics with a border around them. I used the DB Outline Flowers and colored them with Prismacolor pencils. I used the technique that Laura showed to give the large flowers dimension (took this before pic incase I messed it up). :) I used HA felt buttons cut in half to create the scallop border and put HA pearls in the holes. White ribbon is placed under. I used Cute Letters and Designer Alphabet for the title and sewed a border around the whole page.

TFL!

Will be out of town tomarrow so did a quick one for the challenge! ... just done in Faber Castell soft lead black pencil! :) Smaller piece for me 5x6&3/4 in. ........ HEARTFELT THANKS FOR ALL THE LOVELY COMMENTS! :)

My Flickr friend Eric Thomas set me a drawing challenge (a few, actually!) so I hope he approves of this copy of one of his photos!

In April of 1979, the first week I went to work as an engineer in California, a guru from Missouri named Bob introduced me to the 7P precept – proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance. The tragic news today is that due to a catastrophic and inexcusable lack of proper prior planning on my part, I was unable to enjoy the Breakfast of Champions (shredded wheat cereal and a can of Coke). I had two days left in the challenge but only one breakfast Coke left and decided on the course of deferred gratification, saving my final can of Coke with its life-saving jolt of caffeine for day seven. I had to settle for a bowl of shredded wheat with milk for breakfast, supplemented by an early snack of cheese. As expected, suffering from the excruciating absence of my minimum daily requirement of caffeine, I was dragging all afternoon. Even so, I went to the Y and did an hour on the treadmill, running 4 miles and walking 1.3 more good for 670 calories.

Happily, things improved from there as I still had 3/8 of a delicious brined chicken and some peas and carrots for dinner. Still hungry from my workout, I ate all eight cookies left in my chocolate cookie rations, which somewhat compensated for the disastrous morning, as cookies and Coke are two of the four basic heavenly food groups (the other two being chips and beer), all four of which might be frowned upon by Coach Pam and other earthly nutritionists. But in paradise, things will be different…

All joking aside, I can’t complain at all, with a total of 2494 calories at a cost of $3.87 plus tax.

The exciting news today is that Coach Pam has taken up the living on $30 a week challenge out in California. Her diet is quite different than mine, built around M&M’s peanut candies and the maize and beans Native American diet, but supplemented with lots of vegetables, soy products, fruit, eggs, cheese, and one lonely concession to my carnivore world, a skimpy, boneless, skinless chicken breast. Good luck Pam. I just hope to God your husband doesn’t blame me for this….

I overlayed 4 different views of the flag plaza at the foot of F Street on the Eureka Bayfront. I was disappointed that the sky was gray, but when I got to overlaying the images I found that the gray sky worked out okay.

First option: show me something about Las Vegas that does not show up on the postcards or make that postcard subject look "new"
