The Moon moved very close in the sky to Mars the other night, so I took a picture of the two together. The Moon is at the left, 252,000 miles away. Mars is 44.2 million miles away, at the right.

Resembling the puffs of smoke and sparks from a summer fireworksdisplay in this image from NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, these delicate filaments are actually sheets of debris from a stellar explosion in a neighboring galaxy. Hubble's target was a supernova remnant within the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a nearby, small companion galaxy to the Milky Way visible from the southern hemisphere.

Denoted N 49, or DEM L 190, this remnant is from a massive star that died in a supernova blast whose light would have reached Earth thousands of years ago. This filamentary material will eventually be recycled into building new generations of stars in the LMC. Our own Sun and planets are constructed from similar debris of supernovae that exploded in the Milky Way billions of years ago.

Celestial Room of the Salt Lake LDS temple.

“Your enjoyment of the world is never right, till every morning you awake in Heaven: see yourself in your Father's palace; and look upon the skies, the earth, and the air as celestial joys: having such a reverend esteem of all, as if you were among the angels.”

This is the trip around the world following the "quilt in a day" directions. It's a crib sized quilt for a friend who wanted bright gender neutral fabrics. The backing was originally going to be the orange that's on the front but it was a few inches too small so back I went and found the galaxy fabric, perfecto! Each time I do one of these I learn something new that improves my quilting a little bit. This time I taped the backing to the floor and gently stretched it taut then did the same with the top and batting before sewing them into an inside out sandwich with a wee opening to flip.

This room focuses on the ceiling with the Hectic Eclectic ceiling stencils. Add a Gizmo Border around the edge for some additional interest, and a Sum and Moon motif in metallic.

Apsara

Celestial nymphs, always bare-breasted and usually dancing, representing an ideal of female beauty.

I'm driving home from a friend's house last night, and as I reach Highway 1 and look out over the near-dark ocean, I see this amazing sight: four celestial bodies arranged in a beautiful, glittering cluster—a conjunction.

I speed home, throw the camera on the tripod, step out onto the deck, and grab this shot.

Next, I did some googling, and learned I was lucky enough to catch a show that had a one-night-only engagement. Check out the notes in the photo, then read this.
