An example of an ornate design on the ceiling at Swannanoa Palace, on Afton Mountain near the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Paying a return visit to the impressive Glasgow City Chambers during Doors Open Day (when many places are opened up to the public) in Glasgow last weekend with my dad. Completed in 1888 by architect William Young, this large building sits on George Square in the middle of Scotland's largest city, the interior decorated richly in marble, granite, gold leaf and beautiful tileworks, all a legacy of a time when the city was one of the powerhouses of the British Empire, goods flowing in and out, many of them on the steam locomotives or the great Clyde-built ships. A different era, changed times, those huge industries which supplied much of the globe are long gone, but the city remains, it's still very much Glasgow.
The amazing Baroque plasterwork on the ceiling of the main court in Sessions House, Northampton. Installed in the 17th century, it took four years to complete and was made under the direction of Edward Goudge, Chief Plasterer to Christopher Wren.
Goudge was also responsible for the plasterwork of the ceilings of All Saints' church in the town. See www.flickr.com/photos/8118630@N08/21736109795/in/photostr...
The ceiling in one room was glass and had pieces of Chihuly glass art above. I felt like I was in a kaleidoscope or a glass paperweight. It was beautiful.
We were at the Curran Theatre seeing a fun play called The 39 Steps. Crazy good acting. I managed to take this picture just before the crazy usher lady started yelling that no pictures were allowed.
House by Richard Leplastrier; The white panels on the library ceiling can actually be raised or lowered. When the panels are raised, the ceiling makes a continuous arc upwards to help catch breezes coming in through openings near the top of the wall. When the panels are down, they help to insulate the library from these same openings and significantly reduce the volume of the space so there is less space to heat. The concrete floors of the library are heated from underneath.
