just amazing Gaudí art

Carved from local Cedar Wood.

This house has been converted into a showroom and sales area for Tunisian rugs, many of extremely high quality. The house has an elaborately carved ceiling with a chandelier. I stood directly under the chandelier for this photo, so that you can see the chandelier and the roof above it. I very much like the symmetry in this photo.

The Guardian Building in downtown Detroit was originally built in 1927 to be the flagship branch of the Union Trust Company. Architect Wirt C. Rowland of Smith Hinchman & Grylls conveyed the opulence of Detroit's financial sector in the early 20s with stunning art deco details inside and out. It is still home to the same architecture firm, now called Smith Group.

This is the ceiling from Room 65 in the Sully Wing, 1st floor. This ceiling is surrounded by allegories representing Peace, Justice, Strength and Law, executed in trompe-l'oeil as framed paintings placed at the center of each side of the ceiling, and are framed by twelve naked male figures, in imitation marble, holding up garlands.

The restored Detroit Opera House AKA Grand Circus Theater, and Capitol Theatre.

Designed by C.Howard Crane in Italian Renaissance style, opened in 1922. Seating 3,500, it was the 5th largest theater to open at that time.

After 1989, it had a 20 million dollar restoration.

It was built to show movies but C.Howard Crane forgot to add in the projection booth! It has one now up in a ceiling cove.

More vaulted ceilings with great lighting - just wished I had a tripod that day - could have played a bit more with these shots :-)

Occupying the summit of the Capitoline Hill and consisting of several separate palaces and underground tunnels, Rome's Musei Capitolini date back to 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV gifted to the people of Rome a collection of bronze statues. Since then, they have grown considerably and now house a world-class collection of paintings, sculpture and antiquities. The general public have been admitted since 1734, making these the world's first museum, so it is said. This photograph is of one of the highly decorated ceilings in one of the halls.

Routed panel are an exciting range of decorative, textured wall panels with patterns carved into their surface. A feature wall in 3D wall panels creates a huge impact, lending an architectural feel to the room at relatively little cost. The mausoleum had so many unadorned long hallways with low ceilings and crypts on both sides and some that were 2, 3 or 4 stories tall with grand decor such as this one. I was quite surprised at the mausoleum's beauty because the cemetery grounds were unremarkable except for one huge 20x50 foot religious mosaic. Forest Lawn Mausoluem, Long Beach, CA USA

In 1537, Oda Nobuyasu, Nobunaga’s uncle, built Inuyama Castle, which now has the honor of being Japan’s oldest surviving original castle. And what a history this castle has! In 1584 it served as the headquarters for Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Komaki campaign against Tokugawa Ieyasu and eventually was given, along with the surrounding area in fief to the Naruse Masanori in 1617, whose family held it until the clan and fief system was abolished by the Meiji government in 1871. At this time, many of the castle’s walls and turrets were ordered destroyed leaving only a stone wall and the castle’s keep intact. In 1891, the area was struck by a very powerful earthquake which destroyed the remaining turrets and other structures. In a very rare move, in fact it is the only time this has happened that I am aware of, the Meiji government returned the castle to its former lord, the 9th Naruse daimyo, Masamitsu, under the condition that the family restore the castle. And thus the oldest castle in Japan became the only privately owned castle until 2004, when the family turned it over to the Aichi prefectural government. Upkeep and property taxes must have been a terrible drain on the Naruse family.

In 1935 Inuyama Castle was designated as a National Treasure and it really is something special. It’s one of my favorite castles. I’m particularly fond of the attached turret called a tsuke yagura .
