I don't actually know what this sign says, but I'm guessing something like, "Caution! Workers working!"
A fanciful yellow caution barricade encircles a patch of uneven brick sidewalk at Arlington Courthouse Plaza.

In NASCAR shorthand, a "caution" is a moment after a wreck or a moment when some official sees some potentially dangerous piece of debris on the track when NASCAR puts out the yellow flag, and the cars slow down and line up behind the pace car. This lets crews clear the the track more safely and gives the racing teams a little breathing room to come into the pits, change tires, and make adjustments. Depending on the track, a caution can last as few as three or four laps or as many as ten. Talladega's big enough that the cautions run on the short side of that.
A tendency of any race, though, is that (as former race car driver and fellow native of Owensboro, KY Darrell Waltrip says) "cautions breed cautions." Once the caution flag comes out that first time and throws everybody off their rhythm, you often get a whole bunch of cautions right after. That's what happened after that first wreck shown in the last picture at Talladega. Once that caution came out, the race turned into a demolition derby.
Most of these wrecks happened on the other side of the track, so we couldn't really see them. Talladega's installed a few giant screens since our last trip, though, so we got to watch the wrecks that way. I'm honestly not sure which wreck this is, as there were several similar crashes in short order. One of these took out all the young drivers I was enjoying watching, though, when Daniel Suarez made a mistake trying to cut in front of Chase Elliot and took out half the field, including Ryan Blaney. This made me sad. I'd have liked to have seen those guys run to the end.
