Container ship under the Golden Gate bridge. This is a reminder that it's not all just Fisherman's Wharf and the museum ships; it's still a major and very active US port.

Emergency bicycle tyres during World War I. Rubber was scarce since Germany was at war with all the colonial powers that could have supplied it (France, England).

 

Not sure just how comfortable the ride with this thing would have been, especially considering that there were few paved roads during that time. Those springs look like magnets for little stones. Once in, good luck prying them out again.

Capstan on the quarterdeck. You'd think the capstan should be on the forecastle to have better access to the anchor cable, but no, it's on the quarterdeck for most ships of that era.

 

Below the quarterdeck railing you can see the capstan bars. One of those is inserted into each of the holes on the top of the capstan with several men pushing on each one.

The glass partition is there to keep tourists off.

Amy and I used to work together. But we haven't sat down together since I quit. So I bought her pizza and we caught up, then we wandered around the Havelock farmers market and she bought me a brownie.
